On Budget & Economy: Responsible budgeting sets city up for future

Phoenix finished fiscal year 2010-11 with revenues right on target, expenses under budget and an AAA credit rating, the highest credit rating of the six largest cities in the US.

Despite one of the worst economic meltdowns in the history of the US, Phoenix maintained the highest possible bond rating, which has saved taxpayers millions of dollars in interest expenses. Because of careful planning & strong financial management, we are now positioned to lead this great city into the future.

On Immigration: Supports tougher immigration reform, support for cities

I strongly support the recent bi-partisan proposal on immigration reform and urge members of Congress to embrace the measure.

Mayors deal with the consequences of illegal immigration every day. It is critical that any legislation provide resources for cities and states, which are disproportionately bearing the financial burden of our broken immigration system. Also, it is essential that we seek to resolve this issue in a way in which the rights of both citizens and non-citizens are protected.

On Crime: AZ must stay vigilant; threats can come from anyone

We must continue to be vigilant to any activity that looks suspicious. Threats can come from anyone, no matter their physical appearance or dress, so we must take care not to assume certain types of people represent a greater or lesser degree of danger.

Here in Phoenix the best possible public safety team has been working since before 9/11 to keep us safe. Today, there is no pending credible threat against our community. But in matters such as these, we must take every possible precaution.
