2010-2020 Mayor's Office Websites: on Drugs

Eric Adams: Evaluate substance abuse clinics locations, spread them out

The city has scores of free or low-costs drug and alcohol abuse clinics and treatment centers, but many are not located in areas where they are most needed, and they tend to be clustered around places like 125th Street in Harlem. I will launch a citywide program to evaluate the location of substance abuse clinics and make sure they are adequately spread out to support people in all parts of New York City.

Marty Walsh: Create an Office of Addiction Recovery Services

Marty Walsh is no stranger to finding innovative solutions to complicated public health issues through collaboration and hard work. Marty is a widely recognized advocate for families and individuals seeking substance abuse services.

Marty will create an Office of Addiction Recovery Services in City Hall within the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC). This office will collaborate with other city and non-profit agencies in Boston to help citizens navigate the complex treatment and recovery support system so that they and their loved ones can get the help they need when they need it. He will expand the current HOTLINE system to include 24-hour coverage. Marty understands that it is imperative help be immediately available when an individual in need of substance abuse services is ready to enter treatment.

Bill de Blasio: 50,000 arrests for marijuana possession unjust and wrong

In New York City, nearly 50,000 people were arrested last year for marijuana possession. Low-level marijuana possession arrests have disastrous consequences for individuals and their families. These arrests limit one's ability to qualify for student financial aid and undermine one's ability to find stable housing and good jobs. What's more, recent studies demonstrate clear racial bias in arrests for low-level possession, with African-Americans arrested four times more frequently as whites--despite roughly equal usage rates.

This policy is unjust and wrong. First-time offenses for possession of small amounts of marijuana are supposed to be punishable by fine only, unless publicly displayed. However, too many young African-Americans and Hispanics--without prior convictions--are still arrested for marijuana possession after being stopped and frisked by police, who then treat it as public display. Bill de Blasio will direct the NYPD to stop these misguided prosecutions.
