2010-2020 Mayor's Office Websites: on Energy & Oil

Eric Adams: Transition our power source to wind, away from natural gas

By upgrading our electrical grid, transitioning our power source to wind and away from natural gas, and implementing traffic controls to reduce idling, we can improve the quality of life of New Yorkers and create thousands of new jobs, especially those in low-income communities facing environmental injustice. With waterfront assets we have an opportunity to corner the market on wind power manufacturing and other green technologies.

Shaun Donovan: Get people out of cars and into other transportation

Today in New York, 90% of traffic sector emissions come from private vehicles. We must get people out of their cars and into other modes of transportation that will improve the health and resilience of the city. By connecting bike lanes with current transportation hubs with secure bike parking, we can reduce our reliance on cars and work to lower the emissions coming from private vehicles.

Andrew Yang: Bring a Green New Deal to NYCHA

We know that any chance we have to make significant upgrades to NYCHA's buildings will be a once-in-a-generation opportunity, so we must capitalize on these investments by ensuring all capital improvements are aligned with our sustainability and climate goals. We will usher in not just upgrades to NYCHA buildings, but also, a new era of racial, economic and environmental justice.

Marty Walsh: Reduce Boston's carbon emissions & mitigate climate change

The challenges of climate change are complex. Tackling them requires innovative thinking, visionary leadership, and commitment to collaboration at the municipal level. Reducing Boston's carbon emissions will mitigate the effects of climate change while increasing Boston's ability to confront and survive those changes. Boston must prepare for the effects of rising sea levels to minimize impact both on the waterfront and throughout Boston's neighborhoods

Antonio Villaraigosa: GREEN LA: reach Kyoto targets and use renewables

In 2007, the City adopted GREEN LA: An Action Plan to Lead the Nation in Fighting Global Warming and we have already hit a major milestone by meeting the Kyoto targets for reducing greenhouse gases, four years ahead of schedule. GREEN LA goes further by setting the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% below 1990 levels by 2030; increasing the City's use of renewable energy to 40% by 2020 and over 50 more initiatives that will reduce the City's carbon footprint.

Jerry Sanders: Sustainable energy efficiency via CleanTECH San Diego

To help San Diego weather the national economic downturn, Mayor Sanders has been nurturing San Diego's emerging clean technology industry. Mayor Sanders has advanced policy initiatives to help foster industry growth, particularly in the City's burgeoning clean technology sector. In 2006, Sanders announced the City would explore ways to leverage its enterprise zones, permitting & incentives to support the formation of a clean tech industry cluster. Since then, Sanders' policy staff has worked closely with CleanTECH San Diego, the California Center for Sustainable Energy, and local universities and research institutes to devise ways to nurture San Diego's emerging clean technology industry.

The City is taking advantage of federal stimulus grants and state incentives to bolster the local cleantech sector, including partnering with San Diego Gas & Electric and CleanTECH San Diego to offer no-interest financing for energy-efficiency upgrades for small businesses.
