Jerry Sanders in 2010-2020 Mayor's Office Websites

On Energy & Oil: Sustainable energy efficiency via CleanTECH San Diego

To help San Diego weather the national economic downturn, Mayor Sanders has been nurturing San Diego's emerging clean technology industry. Mayor Sanders has advanced policy initiatives to help foster industry growth, particularly in the City's burgeoning clean technology sector. In 2006, Sanders announced the City would explore ways to leverage its enterprise zones, permitting & incentives to support the formation of a clean tech industry cluster. Since then, Sanders' policy staff has worked closely with CleanTECH San Diego, the California Center for Sustainable Energy, and local universities and research institutes to devise ways to nurture San Diego's emerging clean technology industry.

The City is taking advantage of federal stimulus grants and state incentives to bolster the local cleantech sector, including partnering with San Diego Gas & Electric and CleanTECH San Diego to offer no-interest financing for energy-efficiency upgrades for small businesses.

On Environment: Ensure water reliability via desalination and purchasing

There is still much more to do to ensure water reliability for San Diego. Our region needs a secure commitment from the state for a new means of conveying water out of the Sacramento Delta and into local water systems. We need to continue looking for opportunities to purchase additional water rights and to expand our exploration of ground water resources. We also need to work side-by-side with other agencies and the private sector engaged in expanding desalination and water reclamation options.

On Education: Implementing national standards in San Diego schools

Education is a top priority in San Diego. As a result of recent legislation, class sizes from kindergarten to third grade have been reduced to less than 20 students per class. Studies show that the K-3 years are the most formative, and that by reducing class size, teachers can give more personalized attention. To achieve the smaller class size, more than 250 new teachers have been hired and new schools are planned and funded for construction.
