Marty Walsh in 2010-2020 Mayor's Office Websites

On Homeland Security: Prioritize permanent housing for every homeless veteran

Marty believes veterans deserve our respect and gratitude for putting everything on the line to serve our country. He believes our gratitude must go beyond holidays and beyond words, and extend to providing the housing, education, jobs, healthcare, and services they need to thrive and contribute their considerable talents to our city. He made it a priority to provide supportive and permanent housing for every homeless veteran.

On Gun Control: Stopping illegal gun trafficking is a top priority

Marty made stopping illegal gun trafficking a top priority and is committed to ridding Boston of the illegal guns used in crimes. He launched an annual New England Regional Gun Violence Summit, to fight the interstate trafficking that brings illegal guns to Boston. In 2015, Mayor Walsh signed an ordinance banning replica handguns in public spaces, making residents aware of the danger of replica handguns and increasing the dialogue about their consequences with Boston's young people.

On Abortion: More to be done for access to reproductive choices

In terms of reproductive choices, crisis pregnancy centers outnumber women's health providers in Boston three to one, seriously undermining women's access to quality family planning, appropriate counseling, and overall choice. 90% of all domestic abuse victims are female, while most abusers are male. And domestic violence and overall violence against women remains under-reported & under-investigated. There remains considerable work to be done before Boston's women have true equality, access, and safety

On Civil Rights: Care for our LGBTQ elders and support our LGBTQ youth

Despite great strides towards equality over the last two decades, there is still work to be done here. A Walsh Administration will be steadfast in meaningfully addressing the issues that remain, including caring for our LGBTQ elders and supporting our LGBTQ youth. Marty recognizes that Boston's municipal government must continue to support and promote LGBTQ equality. He knows that when equality is comprehensively supported and promoted, all of Boston is enriched.

On Civil Rights: Gender wage gap is still $10B per year in Boston

The statistics on women in Boston are staggering. Women working in Boston lose $9.7 billion annually because of the still remaining gender wage gap. Almost a quarter of all women and more than half of Boston's female-headed families with children under 18 live in poverty. These trends are all substantially worse for women of color and are particularly devastating for poor and working class women, who face substantial hurdles to find affordable housing, safe child care, and living-wage paying jobs

On Crime: More community policing & diversions for non-violent crimes

Marty's policy on fighting crime will rely upon intelligence gathering, smart policing, and community-based efforts. In some of these areas Boston already excels and is considered a national example. Nevertheless, there is a still much to be done and with Marty in City Hall, progress will be made.

On Drugs: Create an Office of Addiction Recovery Services

Marty Walsh is no stranger to finding innovative solutions to complicated public health issues through collaboration and hard work. Marty is a widely recognized advocate for families and individuals seeking substance abuse services.

Marty will create an Office of Addiction Recovery Services in City Hall within the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC). This office will collaborate with other city and non-profit agencies in Boston to help citizens navigate the complex treatment and recovery support system so that they and their loved ones can get the help they need when they need it. He will expand the current HOTLINE system to include 24-hour coverage. Marty understands that it is imperative help be immediately available when an individual in need of substance abuse services is ready to enter treatment.

On Education: Further raise public confidence in Boston Public Schools

Boston deserves a public education system that provides a high quality education to every child. Under its appointed school committee, graduation rates and student performance have made steady gains, and student enrollment is increasing, suggestive of rising public confidence in Boston Public Schools. In spite of progress, not all schools and students are experiencing success. For example, 72% of Boston Public Schools are designated level 3 or 4, which are among the lowest 20% of all schools in Massachusetts. Only 66% of incoming ninth graders graduate high school in four years, and only 33% of high school graduates complete college. As academic standards are increasing to keep pace globally, disparities in academic performance continue between Asian and White students and Latino/a and African-American students.

On Energy & Oil: Reduce Boston's carbon emissions & mitigate climate change

The challenges of climate change are complex. Tackling them requires innovative thinking, visionary leadership, and commitment to collaboration at the municipal level. Reducing Boston's carbon emissions will mitigate the effects of climate change while increasing Boston's ability to confront and survive those changes. Boston must prepare for the effects of rising sea levels to minimize impact both on the waterfront and throughout Boston's neighborhoods

On Environment: More programs in parks and green spaces

Marty Walsh recognizes the powerful role that parks and green spaces play in a safe, healthy, and thriving city. Sports and cultural programming in parks is at the heart of lively communities and neighborhoods. Green spaces also provide immeasurable benefits to Boston residents because they assist in maintaining public health, public safety, community-building, & economic strength. Expanding and enriching programming within green spaces to engage more Bostonians in civic life would be a top priority

On Homeland Security: Values the sacrifice of veterans & provide benefits

Boston is home to more veterans than any other community in the Commonwealth and is thus the municipal services hub for our state's veteran community. Every veteran and military family deserves the respect and access to benefits they have rightfully earned. The Walsh Administration will improve the delivery of services on which Boston veterans, military families, and Gold Star families depend. Marty values their sacrifice and will work to ensure these men and women have access to stable jobs, affordable homes, and rehabilitative services, and comprehensive healthcare, among other critical services. Outreach and communication on the programs available in these areas is the first step, as utilization helps vets live fulfilling lives. Marty's Administration will also partner with the Veteran's Administration and local non-profits so that veterans' services are brought to the neighborhoods where they can be accessed more easily.

On Immigration: More services via New Bostonians Office

A son of immigrants, Marty's experience reflects the values and contributions that immigrants continue to make in the city of Boston. Today, immigrants account for over a quarter of the city's total population and foreign-born residents have nearly doubled since 1990. The Walsh Administration will do more to celebrate the individual and cultural identities of our immigrant residents, while simultaneously facilitating inclusion in their adopted country.

On Technology: Modern transportation system means less traffic congestion

Marty Walsh understands how transportation plays a vital role in Boston's economy, in its quality of life, and in ensuring that the city is as environmentally responsible as possible. Marty envisions a modern transportation system with less traffic congestion and more equitable access among neighborhoods and residents. He is committed to a system that is efficient, accessible, and green, with a wide range of options for residents and visitors. Given the reality that maintenance and construction of most of Boston's transportation facilities are dependent on state and federal planning and funding, Marty's considerable experience in the state legislature makes him best positioned to advocate for Boston's infrastructure needs with leaders on Beacon Hill.
