2011 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Homeland Security

Bill Haslam: Only 1% of our country serves to keep the rest of us free

One thing that the rest of the country and the whole world already know us for is our well-deserved reputation for being the Volunteer State. Today, many of our Tennessee volunteers are going to far away lands, away from family and friends, protecting th freedoms that we hold dear. The men and women of Tennessee, who serve in the military, are on the front line in the war against terror.

Since September 11, 2001, more than 20,000 men and women in the Tennessee National Guard--Army and Air Force--have been called to serve. While many have served, some gave their last, full measure. Since 2001, 136 Tennesseans--men and women--have lost their lives. Please join me in a moment of silence in recognition of those who are called to serve and in honor of those who gave their lives to protect and preserve our freedoms. Thank you. The reality is that less than one percent of our country serves in our voluntary armed forces in order to keep the rest of us free and secure. For that, we should all be grateful

Bev Perdue: N.C. is most military-friendly state in America

Tar Heel families give our sons and our daughters to the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines, Coast Guard, and the National Guard. We cry together when they are wounded or give their lives for America, and we rejoice together when they come home. Through it all, we declare ourselves--our North Carolina--to be the most military friendly state in America. We are the people who refuse to turn backwards. We have the ambition to conquer tomorrow.

Jay Nixon: Show-Me Heroes: jobs waiting for returning vets

We're fighting every day for jobs for our veterans. Last summer, I visited our troops in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. And everywhere I went, I heard the same question: "Will there be a job for me when I come home?" Tonight, I'm pleased to report that ou efforts helped hundreds of veterans find jobs last year.

One year ago, I announced the "Show-Me Heroes" job initiative to help our veterans quickly regain their footing in civilian life. More than 1,000 Missouri employers stepped up to take the Show-Me Heroes pledge to give veterans first crack at a job interview. I'd like to thank each and every employer who took the Show-Me Heroes pledge and hired a veteran, and I urge every employer in our state to do the same. [Companies can also take] advantage of our Work Ready Missouri program, which retrains unemployed workers to compete in today's economy.

Earl Ray Tomblin: State cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs

We have recently made significant strides to improving care for our Veterans, with our new Veterans Nursing Facility. And, I have requested an additional $300,000 dollars in funding to make sure that the final resting place for our veterans is properly cared for and managed.

Our veterans need a more prominent place in our Government. I am therefore creating a new department--the Department of Veterans Affairs. For the first time, Veterans Affairs will have an official place in the Governor's Cabinet.

Dennis Daugaard: Split two departments: Military & Veterans' Affairs

I will be splitting the current Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs into two cabinet-level departments. The Department of the Military will oversee the National Guard. The Department of Veterans Affairs will oversee our Veterans benefits and programs.

Creating separate Departments for the Military and for Veterans Affairs will allow focusing on leading an increasingly active National Guard, while allowing Veterans Affairs to ensure that we always meet our obligations to our veterans.

Jack Dalrymple: Our troops safeguard our quality of life

Our efforts in economic development and education are producing a quality of life in North Dakota that is improving every year. But we must work hard to protect and preserve that quality of life against all challenges. At the core of our quality of life is our freedom--freedom to improve our lives and to enjoy our good fortune. We are utterly indebted to the men and women of our National Guard and all of our Armed Forces for the great sacrifices they make every day on our behalf.
