Sam Rohrer in 2012 Penn. Senate Debates

On Environment: Eliminate Department of Energy; scale back EPA

On reducing the debt, Rohrer called for Congress stop increasing the debt ceiling as well as a plan for reducing spending and eliminating such federal agencies as the Department of Energy. Other agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, can be scaled back.

On Health Care: ObamaCare is big government mentality

Candidates were asked about the problems of the Affordable Care Act. Scaringi said it's not affordable, but costly. "It is government intrusion," he said.

Rohrer called the Affordable Care Act a "big government mentality." He said even before the measure was passed, the nation's health care system was being incrementally destroyed. Now, as time goes on, it will become increasingly difficult to repeal Affordable Care.

On Jobs: Washington does not create jobs; but it can destroy jobs

Rohrer said the state needs to have a senator with experience, one who can hit the ground running.

He said the nation has been burdened by over-spending and too many regulations, making it tough for free enterprise. Rohrer added that the country has to return more power to the states. "Washington does not create jobs," he said. "It can destroy jobs."Rohrer said one of the big problems has been party politics, which prompts many lawmakers to compromise their true beliefs.

On Tax Reform: High taxation comes from ignoring the Constitution

Each of the candidates thought the federal debt is the nation's greatest threat. Rohrer said the federal debt merely is a symptom of other problems. Over time, he said, people have been elected to office who ignore the Constitution and use their positions for personal gain. As a result, over-regulation, bailouts, failure to enact an energy plan, and high taxation have followed.

On War & Peace: Threats by Iran should not be taken lightly

With regard to the U.S. policy with Iran, Welch said everything needs to be put on the table. Scaringi said he does not want Iran to have nuclear capabilities but said the U.S. has to proceed with caution. Reports indicate, he said, that Iran is not trying to obtain nuclear capabilities.

Rohrer said he didn't think any threats by Iran should be taken lightly. He noted the rising militarization of the Middle East. "Israel should be encouraged to stand tall," he said.
