Heidi Heitkamp in Survey of 2012 Senate campaign websites
On Homeland Security:
Heroes Health Card and tax credit for hiring vets
- Push for a Heroes Health Card for North Dakota Veterans:
63% of our veterans have to drive more than an hour to receive critical treatment at a hospital. As Senator, I will push for a "Heroes Health Card" that will allow our
veterans to be treated in their own communities, rather than forcing them to drive for hours to get to Fargo for treatment--something that is especially critical for our veterans who live in the West. - Renew Tax Credits for Companies to Hire
Veterans:
Unemployment among veterans is still too high, but one reason that unemployment rate has dropped is the "Returning Heroes" hiring tax credit, which passed Congress in 2011. That tax credit is set to expire in January.
With unemployment still too high among our veterans, I will work to extend that tax credit and build upon it by finding other methods to further encourage companies to hire veterans.

Balance the budget by cutting government spending
Q: How would you help Americans build a financial nest egg for their retirement?
A: Heidi says it's time to put country first, put politics aside and work together to cut government spending, balance the budget, create jobs and get our economy back on track--while protecting North Dakotans.

On Energy & Oil:
Use all our rich energy resources wisely
Today, as a director of the Dakota Gasification synfuels plant, she's a champion for North Dakota's energy industry.
Heidi believes we need to use all of North Dakota's rich energy resources wisely, creating and keeping high-paying jobs right here.

On Drugs:
Battled drug dealers as Attorney General
Most of you probably remember her years as Attorney General. Heidi battled drug dealers, protected senior citizens from scams, helped pass one of the toughest laws in the nation to keep sexual predators off the
streets and away from children, and when the federal government tried to misuse environmental laws to take over privately owned North Dakota farmland and put farmers in prison, she went to court and won.

On Crime:
Give civil authorities power to put away sexual predators
Heidi proposed changing the law to authorize civil commitment of sexual predators, and she testified before members of the Legislature, trying to make them understand. Since the law passed, more than 80 sex offenders have been committed to
the state hospital, and there are 54 offenders undergoing treatment at the facility, off the streets and safely locked away from schools, playgrounds and neighborhoods.

On Health Care:
Spearheaded lawsuit against big tobacco
While serving as the Attorney General of North Dakota, Heitkamp's biggest achievement was working on the lawsuit filed against big tobacco. She spearheaded the campaign to hold big tobacco companies responsible for their actions
and succeeded in obtaining large amounts of money for each state to use in tobacco cessation programs. The lawsuit also placed restrictions on allowable advertising for tobacco companies."

On Government Reform:
Washington is badly broken
I'm running for the United States Senate because Washington is badly broken and our state needs an independent voice who will go there to stand up for North Dakota.
With me, the people of North Dakota always have and always will come first.
