Speech at 2013 CPAC conference: on Budget & Economy

Bobby Jindal: Replace "obsession with zeroes" with growth strategy

Jindal presented a bit different approach from that taken by many other CPAC speakers. Jindal is a great believer in the strategy of growing our way out of fiscal crisis, rather than imposing severe spending cuts. "Today's conservatism is too wrapped up in solving the hideous mess that is the federal government," the Governor judged. "Our objective is to grow the private sector. We must not become the party of austerity, we must become the party of growth."

The debate between controlling government to rein it in, or make it even larger, is a debate Jindal sees Republicans trying to fight on the Democrats' terms. It is a "very small and short-sighted debate," he said. "If our vision isn't greater than that, we don't deserve to win."

Jindal cited the "fiscal cliff" as an example of conservatives falling into a "sideshow trap" & allowing Washington to take center stage over the rest of America. He doesn't see this "obsession with zeroes" and focus on spreadsheet politics as a winner for Republicans.

Sarah Palin: No budget for 4 years? No budget is no leadership

It cost nearly 100 bucks now to fuel up your truck. It costs tens of thousands of dollars to send your child to college. Man, the cost of a case of diapers today.... These prices, the impacts on the American family budget, and the Middle Class Americans, while we're breaking their budget, the Democrat-controlled Senate refuses to pass a budget. That was how many years ago that they did? How many Trillions-in-debt-ago? All in violation of Article I Section 9, Clause 7 of our US Constitution. No budget for 4 years. No budget for 4 years is not just bureaucratic bungling. Refusing to pass a budget is refusing to declare what it intends to do with the people's money.

There is a direct correlation between the Senate stubbornly refusing to pass a budget, and the Senate selfishlessly agreeing to go ahead and spend our children and our children's money. No budget is no leadership. It is time for America to get more outraged about this. Never before have our challenges been so big and our leaders so small.

Rand Paul: We cannot continue to borrow $50,000 per second

Our government today is larger than it has ever been in the history of our country. Everything that America has been, and everything we ever wish to be, is now threatened by the notion that you can have something for nothing, that you can have your cake and eat it too, that you can spend a trillion dollars every year that you don't have.

The President seems to think we can keep adding to a $16 trillion debt. The President seems to think the country can continue to borrow $50,000 per second.

The President believes that we should just squeeze more money out of those who are working. He's got it exactly backwards. I'm here to tell you, what we need to do is leave more money in the pockets of those who earned it.

Rand Paul: Sequester doesn't cut spending; it just slows rate of growth

Look at how ridiculously Washington politicians have behaved over the sequester. The President did a big "woe is me" over a trillion dollar sequester that he endorsed and signed into law. Some Republicans joined him. But the sequester didn't even cut any spending. It just slowed the rate of growth. Even with the sequester, government will grow over $7 trillion over the next decade. Only in Washington could an increase of $7 trillion in spending over a decade be called a cut.

After the sequester, it was announced that the White House would stop giving tours. Administration officials said that it was due to "cuts" imposed by the sequester. Meanwhile the President found an extra $250 million to send to Egypt. You know, the country where mobs attacked our embassy, burned our flag, and chanted death to America. I say: not a penny more to countries that burn our flag. The President says he can't find anything to cut except for White House tours.
