2013 N.J. Special Senate Election Debates: on Environment

Steve Lonegan: OpEd: wants to gut environmental regulations

Booker said Lonegan would want to gut environmental regulations, using the polluted Passaic River as an example of the need for them.

"You may not be able to swim in that river, but it's probably, I think, because of all the bodies floating around of shooting victims in your city," Lonegan shot back.

"Oh my God," Booker said.

In another exchange, Lonegan said the state has poured countless dollars "into a big black hole in Newark."

Booker called Lonegan's tone "insulting."

Cory Booker: Vegetarian because of environmental impact of eating meat

Booker tears into a takeout container of scrambled egg whites with peppers and onions. He's been a vegetarian since Oxford, where he was a Rhodes scholar. As Booker describes it in his soothing, storyteller's tenor, "I decided to take to heart Socrates' admonishment about the unexamined life"--the one that says such a life isn't worth living. "And I started reading everything I could. And the more I read, from the environmental impact of eating meat to the health issues to Gandhi, the more I realized that eating the extreme amounts that I really enjoyed was not resonant with my spirit, with my values. So I tried to go cold turkey, and my body just took off--I felt so good. I'm not one of those judgmental vegetarians who says everybody should do this, but for me it works, and it works very well." In a city not known for its salad bars, Booker is an anomaly

Frank Pallone: Relax restrictions on over-fishing to help fishermen

Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Frank Pallone have introduced a bill called The Flexibility in Rebuilding American Fisheries Act. "Flexibility" means bending to the will of fishermen who want to keep vacuuming up depleted fish populations before they have a chance to recover.

The bill would poke holes in the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the basic law governing fishing in federal waters. The act imposes ambitious timetables for rebuilding fish stocks and gives scientists a say in setting limits.

The bill would allow the government to consider the economic consequences of fishing restrictions, and prolong the deadlines for rebuilding fish stocks. But the fluke fishery--to name one of many--has not yet been rebuilt. The point of Magnuson-Stevens was to give impartial scientists, not self-interested fishermen, a greater say in deciding how many fish to take from the sea. The health of the oceans has never benefited from putting
