Doug Ducey in 2014 Arizona Governor's race

On Environment: Keep decisions in hands of Arizonans, not EPA bureaucrats

State Rep. Bob Thorpe [endorses]: "Doug Ducey exhibits the no-nonsense leadership Arizona needs today. As both a successful businessman and state treasurer, Doug has demonstrated proven capabilities, earning my respect and support. As governor, Doug and the state legislature will work to ensure that Arizona job creation, education, health care and environmental protections are in the hands of Arizonans, not east coast Obama bureaucrats. For a successful Arizona, we need Doug Ducey as our next governor."

On Abortion: Staunchly anti-abortion

Ducey held a convincing lead of 37 percent in the six-way race after most of the ballots had been counted. His closest rival, ex-mayor Scott Smith, took some 22 percent of the vote.

"Now the real race begins," said the staunchly anti-abortion Ducey, 50, a former chief executive of ice cream company Cold Stone Creamery, whose supporters include Tea Party favorite Texas Senator Ted Cruz and hardline Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

On Immigration: Better border security without comprehensive reform

Arizona state treasurer and businessman Doug Ducey claimed victory on Tuesday in the race to be the Republican nominee to replace outgoing Governor Jan Brewer, who has clashed repeatedly with the White House over illegal immigration.

With the vote decided, Brewer joined Ducey on the victory platform, despite having backed [Ducey's opponent] Smith, praising his candidacy in an effort to unify the party for the race ahead.

Ducey campaigned on rejuvenating the state's economy, improving education and shaking free of federal constraints. While calling for better border security, he avoided demands for comprehensive immigration reform and providing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants that might alienate some voters.

On Civil Rights: Outreach to Navajo tribe: it's all about protecting jobs

Doug Ducey reached out to the Navajo people: "Doug Ducey is running to be the Governor of all the people of Arizona. He understands the issues important to the Navajo people, including access to a clean and reliable water supply, issues relating to jobs and economic growth, and the need to fight back against harmful federal regulations that could shut down the Navajo Generating Station, which employs mostly Navajo people," wrote Ducey's communications director.

Not many Republicans reach out to the heavily Democratic Navajo tribe, but Ducey says it's all about protecting jobs, especially the ones at Navajo Generating station in northern Arizona that employees hundreds of people. Ducey's communications director said, "If elected, Doug will work to kickstart the economy for all of Arizona, remove harmful and burdensome regulations that are keeping businesses from putting people to work, and reform our K-12 education system to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education.

On Corporations: Former CEO of Cold Stone ice cream franchise

Most major business groups are not endorsing in the primary. That is mostly because there are supporters of Smith, Ducey as well as Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett and former GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones on the boards of chambers of commerce and industry associations.

Ducey served as CEO and principal of the Scottsdale-based ice cream franchise business between 1996 to 2007. Between 2001 and 2011, 42% of Cold Stone franchises receiving Small Business Administration loans defaulted. Kahala Corp. acquired Cold Stone in 2008.

Ducey has very much hung his gubernatorial hat on his Cold Stone tenure. [His opponent] wants to put a dent in Ducey's Cold Stone credentials. "Mr. Ducey has so far shared only half-truths about a venture that included failures, lawsuits, allegations of misdeeds and taxpayer subsidies," Smith said.

On Gun Control: Avoid shootings by mentally ill but respect 2nd Amendment

The Arizona Republic asked the candidates for governor what changes, if any, should be made to prevent future shooting sprees.

Doug Ducey, Republican: "My heart goes out to any person or family that has been affected by violent crime. The common thread in recent tragedies--Tucson, Aurora, Newtown and now Isla Vista--is that many warning signs were overlooked or ignored. As a nation, we must take a hard look at our mental health system and its failings, and ensure better cooperation between mental health agencies and law enforcement. I will work with Arizona mental health experts, the firearms community and law enforcement professionals to make sure that any programs brought forward will reduce violence and not infringe on the Constitution."

On Civil Rights: Solid conservative record on same sex marriage

State Treasurer Doug Ducey has picked up another conservative endorsement in the Arizona governor's race. The Concerned Woman Political Action Committee announced today it was backing Ducey in the crowded Republican primary to succeed term-limited Jan Brewer. "Doug Ducey has a solid record on issues that matter to conservatives," said Concerned Women's CEO. The Washington group opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage.
