Joe Dorman in 2014 Oklahoma Governor's race

On Budget & Economy: Prosperity requires more than making irresponsible cuts

Oklahoma deserves a common sense leader who understands that economic stability and prosperity require more than simply making fiscally irresponsible cuts as our state faces a mounting budget shortfall.

A recent national study concluded that nearly half--49.1%--of Oklahoma households are in a persistent state of financial insecurity. One in four Oklahoman children go to bed hungry every night.

A strong economy that benefits all Oklahomans depends on our ability to create jobs and attract new business to our great state. As a leader, I believe it is a moral imperative that we take fiscally responsible steps to ensure the opportunity for all Oklahomans to earn a living wage for a hard day's work. Government should work for all Oklahomans, not the special interests.

On Education: I will continue to be a champion for public education

I'll invest in education. Our teachers, our students, our state deserve better. We have to provide adequate resources to eliminate overcrowded classrooms. I will continue to be a champion for public education--working across the aisle to raise salaries for our teachers, because the job of educating Oklahoma kids shouldn't require financial sacrifice at home.

Together we will put our schools on the path towards a 21st century classroom and ensure that Oklahoma schools are the best in the nation.

On Health Care: Drop the partisan games & Invest in rural telemedicine

Like it or not, healthcare is something that impacts us all at some point. We need a Governor who is willing to drop the partisan games and find pragmatic approaches to ensure Oklahomans can access the healthcare they need. ObamaCare, Medicaid, Medicare, you name it--it's all a mess. No one has the perfect solution, but here's the straight truth: continuously focusing on the politics of health care is helping no one.

I'll use the issue of health care to actually help my fellow Oklahomans. I have long led the push to advance telemedicine programs, providing essential health care service to Oklahoma's rural communities.

I will encourage, with all the weight of my office, for our hospitals and hospital systems to invest in telemedicine so with the click of a mouse you can be connected with the best heart doctors, cancer doctors, mental health professionals and so on. The time for health care politics is over; the time to help Oklahomans is now.

On Tax Reform: End tax giveaways to those who really don't need a tax break

For the past four years, we've had policies sugar-coated as tax cuts which are actually tax giveaways to those who really don't need a tax break.

We've weathered the recession storm but aren't out of the woods just yet. Job creation comes through common sense tax policies which will put Oklahoma on the forefront as a state that caters to a 21st century economy serving all of its people.

On Technology: Build storm shelters via local school district funding

The safety and security of all Oklahomans is not a Democrat issue or a Republican issue. It is an Oklahoma issue. It's an issue you can count on me to champion every time.

Whether it's storm shelters for all Oklahoma children, or a functional corrections system, as Governor I will be on the side of the people and fight for the best interest of everyday, hard-working Oklahomans.

As the state that sits in the middle of Tornado Alley, it is time for safe and structurally sound storm shelters--using the most up to date building codes and technology to be built in each of our schools.

I have a plan to use the existing corporate franchise tax, to allocate funds for local school districts to use in constructing these new storm shelters. If ever there were a time for us to do something big, something on a grand scale, now is the time and this is the issue.

On Drugs: No stance on marijuana legalization nor medical marijuana

Dorman doesn't mention marijuana on his website, and a call to his office confirmed that he would not be taking a stance on either the legalization of marijuana or medical marijuana in Oklahoma and does not expect to do so between now and election day.

On Drugs: Legalize marijuana, based on Genesis 1:29

State Sen. Constance Johnson is pushing for the legalization of marijuana as a religious issue. She reportedly said Genesis 1:29 would be the "basis" for her campaign to legalize marijuana in the state. "God created this wonderful, miraculous plant and we know that is has been vilified for the last 100 years, and it's time to change that in Oklahoma," she was quoted as saying.

On Jobs: Minimum wage affects older workers, not just young singles

Criticism is mounting regarding Gov. Mary Fallin's decision to sign a bill that prohibits cities and towns from increasing the minimum wage to an amount higher than that of the state. The state has adopted the federal rate of $7.25. Fallin signed Senate Bill 1023 that prevents the increase. Fallin issued a statement saying, "Obama and his Oklahoma surrogates are ignoring the fact that most minimum wage workers are young, single people working part time or entry level jobs." Mandating an increase would result in lost jobs, she said.

Her Democratic gubernatorial opponent, Rep. Joe Dorman, said the demographics of those earning minimum wage are very different than "Fallin's fantasy world."

"Most are older working people working low-paying or multiple jobs just to get by," he said. Oklahoma has the nation's third-highest rate of people working at or below the minimum wage, Dorman's campaign said. Almost a quarter of Oklahoma jobs pay a low wage, the campaign said.

On Abortion: Pro-life

[Regarding] mounting a successful challenge to Republican Gov. Mary Fallin: "Being out there visiting with the citizens of Oklahoma, I don't think she's as popular as she thinks," said Dorman, who described himself as a "pro life" candidate.
