On Foreign Policy: American colors don't run, but they have been fading

Mark Zaccaria beat out Kara Young 151 to 14 for Senator. Zaccaria pointed to the "grand ol' flag" behind him and said that the American colors don't run, but they have been fading. He wanted to bring brightness back to the "colors" by revitalizing the America he grew up in instead of the "catastrophic" state it is in now.

On Principles & Values: Former chair of state GOP; former Town Council member

The ex-chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Party has jumped into the race against Democratic Senator Jack Reed. Mark Zaccaria is a late entrant. Warwick city employee Raymond McKay had announced his candidacy but was stymied by a local ordinance prohibiting city employees from running for office.

Zaccaria has twice run for Congress in the 2nd District held by Rep. Jim Langevin and chaired the party from 2011 to 2013. He's a former member of the North Kingstown Town Council. He told The Providence Journal he's not running "just because I happen to have a pulse." He says he's doing so to offer a viable alternative to Reed. Reed has been in the Senate since 1997. He won his last re-election campaign handily.

On Budget & Economy: Senate bank regulators are too cozy with regulated banks

Zaccaria accused Reed, who is a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, of being too cozy with the banking industry: "The people that he regulates have been very generous to him."

During his campaign, Zaccaria said, he will also lay out Reed's "anti-economy and anti-business stands," and how much his support for the Affordable Care Act--known as ObamaCare--threaten to "cost the average Rhode Islander."

After a 2007 layoff from a print manufacturing company, Zaccaria started his own company, Rustin Marketing Services. A recipient of unemployment benefits for 20 of a potential 26 weeks, Zaccaria cites Reed's repeated push for extended benefits as an example of the "progressive, depend-upon-government" agenda that Reed supports.
