On Education: Allow parents and students more choices

American education is in desperate need of reform at all levels. We are too reliant on old, rigid models that are restricting choices and locking too many of our children into failure. Our higher education system costs way too much and is not taking advantages of modern technologies that could dramatically improve the product at significantly lower costs. Nowhere else in our culture are we lagging this far behind our potential, and that disconnect will dramatically undermine our potential as a country unless we come to grips with it. We need to strip away our rigid constructs and allow parents and students more choices in their journeys to build their futures.

On Immigration: Secure the border, but wary of comprehensive solutions

I believe strongly as someone who grew up in a border state that we must solve the immigration problem by first securing the border and then providing a pathway for legal immigration that is business friendly and doesn't disadvantage those already in line for citizenship. I am wary of comprehensive solutions that won't solve the problem methodically in a logical way.

On Principles & Values: Unalienable rights are granted by God, not by government

My core philosophy of government can be defined in the wisdom of the Founding Fathers, who understood that certain unalienable rights are granted by God--life, liberty, pursuit of happiness-- and that government cannot take them away because they were not granted by government in the first place. I believe our Founders intended our government to be small and unobtrusive and that attempts to significantly enlarge and expand the role of government end up assaulting our freedoms. I believe limited government is more efficient and compassionate. What we have now in Washington and Illinois is the opposite--bloated, inefficient and abusive to its people.

On Gun Control: Hearings on "Stand Your Ground" laws don't address issue

Doug Truax called on incumbent Dick Durbin to honestly attempt to address the tragic slaughter of young African-American males in Chicago instead of launching press-friendly proposals that will produce no results. Since the George Zimmerman trial, Durbin has announced a new ideological-based hearing in Washington on "Stand Your Ground" laws that won't save one life in Illinois.

Truax said. "While Chicago continues to be a shooting gallery where our children are murdered every night, Dick Durbin holds ideological hearings in Washington that have no bearing on the root causes of the killings."

Truax said as senator he will address the root causes of inner city violence: lack of jobs, lack of quality education, a growing dependency class, and family breakdown. "We can talk around this important issue or we can try to solve it," Truax said. "Dick Durbin is the master at avoiding the hard truths we must confront if we are to save precious lives."

On Health Care: ObamaCare is a disaster based on ideology

US Senate candidate and health care expert Doug Truax today released the fourth in a series of videos on ObamaCare to educate the public why the 2,300-page law won't work and highlight Illinois families affected by it.

Truax, whose successful business provides health care consulting services, noted that ObamaCare is already wreaking havoc on the middle class in Illinois and the rest of America.

"These are just a few of the thousands of Illinoisans already learning first-hand how ObamaCare is a disaster," Truax said. "These folks were happy with their health care and now they are being forced to pay significantly more. This is a hardship for many Illinois families."

"President Obama and Democrats like Dick Durbin forced a partisan trainwreck of a plan on America without a single Republican vote," noted Truax. "There were plenty of good ideas Obama and Durbin ignored in order to please his ideological base and ramrod the legislation through Congress."

On Government Reform: Return to Confidence: stop expanding federal government

My campaign slogan is Return to Confidence. We've got every reason to be confident: The world's lone superpower. Unbelievably vast natural resources. A system of moral capitalism operating within a constitutional republic that is the envy and goal of the world. 314 million Americans who either are successful, want to be successful, or can be successful.

That's a lot to be confident about. However, during the last six years, we have been shoved from one manufactured crisis to the next that all have the same root cause: an overly intrusive, arrogant, forever expanding federal government.

What our country desperately needs is to get back to limited government, get our financial house in order, get the government out of the private sector's way, and "We the People" will return America and then the world back to confidence. Those of us of voting age still remember what that looks like. It can be done...if we have the right people working for us in Washington.

On Crime: Justice means making sure wrong gets punished

Justice:With justice, we can be sure that wrong will be punished and right rewarded. Without justice, we digress into a pattern of favoritism and lawlessness.

The Rule of Law:With the rule of law, we can be sure that what is lawful today will be lawful tomorrow. Without the rule of law, might makes right and the individual gets crushed.

Personal Responsibility: With personal responsibility, we feel the dignity of hard work and success or the sting of personal failure. Without personal responsibility, little by little, entitlements steal our sense of self-worth.

On Free Trade: Market-based competition instead of bureaucratic decisions

Competition:With competition, the best market-based means to the end is quickly found. Without competition, unaccountable bureaucrats decide what is best.

Freedom: With freedom, we can make the choices that benefit our situation as an individual, a family, and a community. Without freedom, our choices are limited by people who have consolidated power around themselves in far off places.

Fairness:With fairness, we know that our effort or lack of effort will be rewarded or discouraged appropriately. Without fairness, the results of our efforts become arbitrary and based on the shifting standards or those that currently hold power.

On Government Reform: Without accountability & transparency, power corrupts

Truth: With truth, we have a standard that corresponds to the correct reality of how the world works. Without truth, our leaders digress into a pattern of propaganda designed to control and manipulate our behavior.

Transparency:With transparency, outcomes can be measured and evaluated for their effectiveness or lack thereof. Without transparency, those with the most money find ways to hide poor results so they can get more money from the system.

Accountability: With accountability, we become confident in our processes and leaders because we know that results will be measured. Without accountability, power corrupts.

On Homeland Security: Learned about duty, honor and country at West Point

Raised in a small town in New Mexico close to the Mexican border, he set his sights on the United States Military Academy at West Point and succeeded in getting appointed. He learned about duty, honor and country at West Point and went on to graduate from U.S. Army Ranger School, the toughest leadership course in the U.S. military.

He began a successful private sector career as a rising manager who aspired once again for the American dream--starting his own business. Doug beat the odds by launching his business just before a recession devastated the economy...and succeeded. Today, he is co-owner and managing partner of Oak Brook-based Veritas Risk Services, LLC, a strategic risk consulting firm that empowers employers in controlling their healthcare costs, benefits, retirement plans and business risk.
