Survey of 2014 Senate campaign websites: on Families & Children

Albert Olszewski: I will always support America's traditional values

I support life at all stages, traditional marriage and believe that the moral degradation of our society through government intervention is a blatant attack on our future. I will always support legislation that restores America's traditional values.

Heather Johnson: Politics is not my passion; it's my God, my kids & family

Seeing that our nation's founding principles of liberty and freedom from oppression are far from the reality in today's political landscape, I answered the call. I am not a career politician. It is not my primary goal in life nor my greatest passion. My passion is my God, my kids and family, writing, friendship and my boyfriend, music, art, science, learning, dancing, and living every moment I have the way that I want to live, enjoying the fruits of my mind and labor the way I see fit.

Bruce Skarin: Much-needed deep social change begins with family

My family is the first reason for why I am running. I am willing to make the personal sacrifice required for such a position because when I look to the future I do not see the same opportunities that I have had being there for my children and the generations to come.

There is an increasing risk of catastrophic consequences for problems like long-term climate change, national debt, and many others that took decades to create and will now take decades to fix. Put plainly, when I look to the future I see a world filled with problems that my generation should have solved.

As a scientist I know that these problems can indeed be solved when we use the right approach, when we represent the people first, and most importantly when we stop waiting to address them. The kind of deep social change needed begins with family, builds into a community, a country, and carries all the way through to how our society works as a whole to create liberty and justice for all

Nels Mitchell: Strong supporter of the Violence Against Women Act

Mitchell said he would work with Rep. Mike Simpson to ensure funding for the Idaho National Laboratory and to protect the Boulder White Clouds, and, unlike Sen. Risch, would be a strong supporter of the Violence Against Women Act.

Mitchell said the 2014 election will be pivotal. "In 2014, we the people must reclaim the US Senate from the control of career politicians. It is not too late for the Senate to reestablish credibility and restore the confidence of the American people."

Dan Sullivan: Choose Respect: address domestic violence epidemic

As Attorney General his primary focus was to [address] Alaska's epidemic levels of sexual assault and domestic violence through the development, launch, and implementation of Alaska's comprehensive "Choose Respect" campaign.

The Governor's "Choose Respect" campaign is the most comprehensive and aggressive effort in the state's history to address this horrendous social problem. The initiative focuses on: toughening sentences for sexual assault offenders; expanding law enforcement throughout the State--especially in rural Alaska; increasing services for victims of sexual assault and their families; and undertaking a broad-based public campaign -- through public service announcements, speeches, and marches--to make Alaskans aware of our sexual assault and domestic violence epidemic, give victims strength and dignity, and encourage all Alaskans--but especially Alaska's men--to choose respect.

Joe Carr: Marriage is best between a man and woman

Marriage is under assault and should be defended as an institution that provides the best environment for creating strong families which leads to a successful culture and civilization. Marriage between a man and woman reduces the likelihood of child poverty by 82%. That is a sobering statistic--especially when every politician says they are interested in protecting children. Our culture has gotten off course, and the best way to build a strong America is by strengthening marriage in the home. If our federal government is really interested in a positive, healthy and prosperous country then our leaders must promote marriage and religious freedom. Our founders lived by Judeo-Christian beliefs and principles, and we must protect these core beliefs that shaped our nation and created the freest people in the world. I will focus on these areas as part of the first principles of personal responsibility and individual liberty.
