Survey of 2014 Senate campaign websites: on Foreign Policy

Gary Peters: Be actively engaged in the Middle East

Creating peace and security in the Middle East must be one of our nation's top foreign policy objectives. To accomplish this, the U.S. must be a strong ally and supporter of Israel. Our nation must be actively engaged in the region, more so than we have been in the last eight years, and I will work to ensure that happens.

Jeff Merkley: In a dangerous world, we need to work with other nations

Jeff is committed to protecting America from those who would do us harm, and to making sure we do so in a way that is consistent with American values and our Constitutional rights. Indeed, Jeff firmly believes that the measure of our strength isn't just the power of our military, but that the United States is safer and stronger when we honor our fundamental American values like respect for the rule of law and invest in the hard work of working with our allies. In a dangerous world, with global threats ranging from terrorism to global warming to nuclear weapons proliferation, Jeff understands that we need to be able to work with other nations to confront these challenges together.

Gordon Ball: Promote human rights as cornerstone of US foreign policy

America's foreign policy should be focused on advancing peace and prosperity here at home and abroad. From advancing nuclear non-proliferation to eliminating conditions that breed terrorism, to combating global public health challenges, I will continue to advocate for policies that promote human rights and democratic policies that are the cornerstone of American foreign policy. Let me be clear: I will never advocate nation-building by America.

Michelle Nunn: Our military is but one element of our national power

We need to use all the tools at our disposal. It is imperative that we continue to play a role in preserving global order and promoting safety and prosperity when and where we can. But we don't need to shoulder this burden alone or rely exclusively on our military--we have a host of allies who share our interests and more tools at our disposal to accomplish our objectives than any other country.

I also believe that we should be judicious before employing the awesome power of America's military and sending our fighting men and women into harm's way on our behalf. Our military is but one element of our national power; we have significant resources, such as our economic strength, our global competitiveness, and our diplomatic power that allow us to secure our interests.

Terry Adams: Engage abroad with defense, diplomacy, and development

We live in an ever-changing world with ever-changing threats, a world in which our country must be engaged. The use of defense, diplomacy, and development must be used to advance U.S. interest around the globe. We must be vigilant and we must also be intelligent with our use of force abroad. War is costly, both in treasure and in blood.

Brad Hutto: We should not act as the world's policeman

Hutto took the fight to incumbent Lindsey Graham: "Rather than appearing on the Sunday talk shows and manufacturing stunts to make the national news, I believe the people back home should be the highest priority for a Senator," Hutto said. "I'll stand up to the party bosses and special interest groups that control Washington politicians like Lindsey Graham. I'll be an independent fighter for South Carolina."

Hutto said that Graham spends too much time in the Washington D.C. bubble and not enough time working for his home state. "He cares more about foreign affairs than about South Carolina. We all see him on talk shows every Sunday pretending to be the junior Secretary of State. He's always talking about anything but us."

Hutto said that Graham's firm belief that the US should act as the world's policeman is wrong. "It's time for our allies abroad to take more responsibility for their own security," he said. Instead, Hutto said he would focus on job creation, public education, and infrastructure.

Jeff Bell: Statehood for Puerto Rico, with full Congressional voting

I have been a long-time advocate for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state because it would be good for the people of Puerto Rico and good for America. As a US territory, the island lacks voting representation in Congress and its economy is underserved by private investment because of the ambiguity that comes with territorial status. The "triple exemption" loophole in the IRS code for Puerto Rico municipal bonds has also contributed to a debt crisis there that threatens public services if it is not addressed. President Obama's task force on Puerto Rico drew the right conclusions:
  1. Puerto Rico's status and its economy are linked
  2. The status question must be resolved soon in order to for Puerto Rico's economy to improve.
Along those lines, I support current legislation in Congress that makes Puerto Rico a state if its residents approve this in a binding election.

Ben Sasse: Healthy skepticism of foreign entanglements

We should approach national security with a healthy skepticism of foreign entanglements, only engaging when it is in our vital national interest. Once the decision has been made to engage, we should act with overwhelming force to decimate our enemies.

Mike McFadden: Crisis in Ukraine came about due to Obama's indecisiveness

Mike McFadden (R-MN) released the following statement on the crisis in Ukraine: "I continue to be extremely frustrated with the lack of a clear foreign policy direction from the current administration, which has cost our country credibility on the world stage. It began when we failed to respond to the attack on our embassy in Benghazi and it continued when the President backed down from his "red line" in Syria. We have reached a point where countries don't fear us and our allies don't trust us," said McFadden. "Nowhere else is this more evident than with the standoff on the Crimean peninsula. This crisis in Ukraine would not be happening if the White House had a discernible foreign policy vision or strategy. But they don't. The only thing clear to the world here is our indecisiveness. And that's a recipe for serious trouble."

Charlie Hardy: Served as Catholic missionary in South America

I was born and raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of European immigrants. As a citizen of the United States, I feel I have been a very fortunate person--and I've dedicated myself to helping others get the same opportunities.

For nearly 30 years, I served communities throughout Wyoming and in South America as a Catholic priest, missionary, and educator. During the twenty years I ministered as priest in the Diocese in Cheyenne, I served pastorally in the communities of Cheyenne, Laramie, Rock Springs and Casper. I was also the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Wyoming and executive director of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. Then, from 1985 to 1993, I ministered in poverty-stricken areas in South America--living for most of the eight years in a pressed-cardboard-and-tin shack in a barrio on the edge of Caracas, Venezuela.

Steve Lonegan: Oppose UN treaties that take away our national sovereignty

Steve supports a strong national defense but opposes the notion that the United States should become the world's policeman. As U.S. Senator, Steve Lonegan will oppose UN treaties that take away our national sovereignty and oppose all efforts to make American troops serve under international agencies. Cory Booker has endorsed various UN treaties that would harm America's ability to defend ourselves.

Terri Lynn Land: America is truly exceptional; but don't always intervene

The United States is unique. Our country was founded on the idea that each person has certain inalienable rights and that government cannot take those rights away. Our nation has a history of recognizing and protecting freedom, both at home and abroad. America is truly exceptional and our leaders must continue to speak up for freedom around the world.

At the same time, America must have a foreign policy that serves the interests of our nation and the American people. We do not have the resources, or the inclination, to intervene in every disagreement or skirmish around the world. We need a smart foreign policy that focuses on America's needs first and limits military engagement only to those instances in which we have a clear national security interest at stake.

Andy Martin: 48 years of experience in Asia, with "over-the-horizon" view

Andy has 48 years of experience in Asia, Southwest Asia and the Middle East; he is regarded overseas as one of America's most respected independent foreign policy, military and intelligence analysts.

Andy was in Iran and Afghanistan during the hostage crisis in 1979-80, and has regularly returned to Southwest Asia since then. He lived in Iraq in 2003. His analysis of the terrorist threat in Iran during 1979-80, and again in Iraq in 2003, were leading-edge predictions of what Americans faced in the future. Andy's worldwide sources give him an "over-the-horizon" view of America's national security.

Cory Booker: Where Israel's security is at stake, so is America's

Israel continues to be an advocate for freedom, equality and democracy in the Middle East, protecting the rights of its citizens while upholding the values that Americans hold dear. From a strategic perspective, the US must continue to support Israel as a secure homeland for the Jewish people. Simply put, where Israel's security is at stake, America's security is at stake.

Lasting security for Israel will ultimately require peace between Israel and its neighbors. That is why we as Americans must continue to work to facilitate direct negotiations that seek a two-state solution. However, it is the right of the Israeli government to make the tough decisions that are necessary to secure its future. The Palestinian People deserve a state, [but it] must not be a vehicle for the launching of attacks against Israel. During any eventual negotiation, certain things must remain non-negotiable, namely conditions that speak to Israel's right to exist as a secure Jewish state.

Cory Booker: Development funds via international organizations for Africa

The story of Africa is one of transformation: local populations, partnered with international organizations and American international development funds, have done enormous good increasing standards of living and improving public health. In few areas has this been truer than the fight against HIV/AIDS, where millions of lives have been saved. Of course, much work remains to be done, particularly when it comes to helping governments drive out corruption and enforce the rule of law.

Cory Booker: Robust diplomacy and international development

America is a great nation because, over the course of our history, we have done great things. The tools that made us a world power--a strong economy, a strong military, robust diplomacy with strong allies, international development, and support for democracy--all must have a place in American strategy. Few of the new challenges we face can be solved by our military alone. Instead all of these pieces must work together to address the economic, social, political, and military challenges of our time.

Joe Carr: Never agree to a treaty that diminishes our sovereignty

The essence of successful American foreign policy has always focused on protecting our best interests, supporting our allies and defending and promoting freedom. We must never agree to a treaty that diminishes our sovereignty, and we should impose strict criteria for granting foreign aid.

Matt Bevin: Fight foreign treaties that weaken our sovereignty

Matt will fight to reform our broken foreign aid system that sends billions of taxpayer dollars to entities or countries that support terrorism and don't enhance our interests. Matt will fight against any foreign treaty, such as the New START and LOST treaties, that weaken our sovereignty and appease our enemies.

Nancy Mace: No foreign aid to Egypt & countries who are our enemies

Nancy Mace made a clear statement in reference to the challenges in Egypt and the broader Middle East today. "I would not vote to send one penny of foreign aid to countries like Egypt who are then turning around and using our arms and our aid to kill civilians," stated Mace. "I want to ask South Carolinians what message are we sending to others when we allow our senior senator to support this effort? It is clear, US foreign policy is adrift and morally bankrupt under our current leadership in Washington.

"Our enemies are emboldened and we are not supporting our allies in the world by bankrolling corrupt governments in countries that hate our culture, burn our flag and train terrorists to kill Americans and our allies.

"Sen. Graham has stood side by side with our president to support a failed foreign policy. The American people want to know why we continue to send foreign aid to countries who prove time and time again that they cannot be trusted. It's wrong."

Murray Sabrin: Failed policy of invade, occupy and rule other nations

The "moderate" Mitt Romney has sounded like John McCain and other GOP elected officials who want to perpetuate America's failed foreign policy of invade, occupy and rule other nations. Of course, Romney did not use those exact words, but that is the gist of his remarks about keeping America "strong" in a world of tyrants and "would be aggressors."

In a speech at the Citadel in South Carolina, Romney called for more military spending, increasing the size of the armed forces and making sure the United States is "supreme" in the world. Romney asserted, "When America is strong, the world is safer."

America will be "strong' when the federal government's fiscal house is in order, the federal government's spending is restrained, the tax burden is lowered substantially, the Federal Reserve stops debasing the dollar, Congress repeals unnecessary regulations, and the federal government does not try to rule every region overseas. In short, our foreign policy should be about "America first."
