Survey of 2014 Senate campaign websites: on Gun Control

Amanda Swafford: Sacrificing liberty for safety has never worked

Sacrificing liberty for safety and security has never worked in our history. Our right to defend ourselves from random acts of violence, some uncontrolled mental illness, and crimes against our property is guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution. Allowing adult gun owners to possess and carry firearms in the largest variety of circumstances possible is the strongest deterrent available to protecting our open and free society.

Nathan LaFrance: Attempts at building a federal gun registry are wrong

As your U.S. Senator, Nathan LaFrance will vote AGAINST any bill which seeks to place federal gun controls and restrictions on the American people.

The United States Constitution could not be more clear: "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". In addition, Nathan believes that any attempts at building a federal gun registry are wrong, and will vote AGAINST attempts at creating one.

It is time to fight back against those who seek to take away the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. WE have the right to defend ourselves and our families, at home and in public, against those wishing to do us harm. If the 2nd Amendment is important to you, the choice is simple: vote Nathan LaFrance for United States Senate in 2014!

Greg Orman: Owns handguns but supports background checks

I own two handguns. I believe in Second Amendment rights.

Both times that I bought a handgun, I was required to go through a mandatory background check to ensure that I was a US citizen who hadn't been convicted of domestic violence, subject to a restraining order, incarcerated for longer than a year, dishonorably discharged from the military, or determined to be mentally defective. Over 700,000 people who met the description above have been prevented from buying firearms at licensed dealers since the background check requirements went into effect.

The idea that those 700,000 people could simply head to a gun show and buy a firearm without the same background scrutiny doesn't make sense to me. While there are likely other illegal ways for criminals to get firearms, we shouldn't make it easy for a violent offender or a mentally ill individual to get a gun. The process for me took a few minutes and ultimately resulted in me being able to buy my handguns without delay.

Thomas Ravenel: Second Amendment is the only gun law needed

There is only one gun law that law-abiding Americans need to follow: The Second Amendment.

It's always amazed me that government was so gung-ho to restrict our constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms. After all, the government's own statistics conclusively prove my point that increased gun ownership among the law-abiding public leads to a safer society.

It's a simple equation: Higher gun ownership among our citizens means a safer society. The government knows this. They know this debate isn't about safety--it's about power. In 1938, the Nazis banned Jewish citizens from owning weapons of any kind or participating in the arms' manufacturing industry. We all know what happened next. I'm not suggesting our leaders are Nazis, but I am suggesting it's a lot easier to take people's freedoms away when they can't fight back--and if you think Washington is out of control now, just wait until they succeed in advancing their radical "gun control" agenda.

Randall Batson: Possess & trade firearms as owners wish

2nd Amendment: Just as in all property, the people should be able to keep in possession, purchase, trade, and sell their firearms as they wish. Proper handling and operation of a firearm retains it as an effective tool of defense and sport. The necessity of them is determined by one's environment, and competency by ones psychology.

Gordon Ball: Second Amendment protects Americans from tyranny

Not only is responsible gun ownership a part of the fabric of Tennessee, but it is also a fundamental constitutional right. The Second Amendment gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms.

I am often amused by political candidates who go out with their (camo) suits and shotguns and pretend to shoot ducks to show their support for the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment isn't about hunting, it's there to protect Americans from tyranny, to safeguard our families, and to protect our property.

Chad Taylor: I'm a gun owner, but we need to enforce gun laws

I am a proud gun owner, a lifetime National Rifle Association (NRA) member, 2nd Amendment advocate, and avid outdoorsman, having grown up hunting and fishing all over the state of Kansas. I recognize the right of law-abiding citizens to own and maintain firearms.

As the Shawnee County District Attorney, I am all too familiar with the effects of gun violence on the communities of Kansas. The most critical first step we can take to reduce violence is to enforce the laws we have on the books--like the mandatory minimum five-year federal sentence for felons in possession--and keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals.

I also believe we need to properly and adequately address the lack of mental health services to help those that are most at risk. Without this component, our approach to public policy is incomplete.

Cory Booker: Common sense gun reform on day one

As Mayor, I did all I could to fight against gun violence: Congress had the chance to get this right in the wake of Newtown. If elected to the Senate, I will start work on common sense gun reform on day one.

Cory Booker: More background checks & gun trace data

Passing Common Sense Gun Safety Legislation: It is plainly unacceptable that we don't have background checks for every gun sale in America, as well as bans on high capacity magazines and assault weapons that have no practical sporting use, and countless other reforms that will save lives.

I even personally appealed to the ATF for law enforcement access to crime gun trace data so that my department, and departments across New Jersey, could do more to understand and battle against gun trafficking.

Monica Wehby: Protect all constitutional rights, especially 2nd Amendment

Our founders created this country because they felt like they were being oppressed by a distant government who was not adequately representing their concerns or protecting their livelihood. The leaders of this nation banded together to create a document that would enshrine forever what they fought for into a system of laws. The constitution they created is without question the most perfect document man has ever produced on how to balance liberty and government.

As a doctor, Monica Wehby has taken her oath to protect a patient's right to privacy very seriously. As Oregon's US Senator she will take that same seriousness to her pledge to protect and defend the US Constitution. Wehby will fight to protect all of our constitutional rights and especially the 2nd Amendment. She will strongly oppose the UN Arms Treaty which infringes upon our right to keep and bear arms. A constitutional right is an inalienable one and our politicians must always remember that.

Murray Sabrin: Support concealed carry: We are defenseless outside home

We are defenseless outside our homes and apartments because it is virtually impossible to obtain a concealed carry permit in the state of New Jersey.

This is not to say that everyone should or must carry a firearm to protect himself and his loved ones in public. But responsible firearm owners should have that choice in a society where some sociopaths show no value for human life. Why legislators and their allies in the so-called gun control community have such disregard for human life is astonishing. There ethic boils down to one proposition: it apparently is better for innocents to be targets then have the ability to protect themselves from these marauding murderers.

Bruce Skarin: Right to gun ownership with safety as priority

I am a strong advocate for protecting our civil rights. We must also recognize the right to well regulated gun ownership that makes safety a priority.

For too long we have let ourselves get distracted by fundamental disagreements that will never be resolved. As Senator I will shift the focus onto policies that reduce the outcomes that nobody on either side wants to see.

David Clements: Right to bear arms protects all of our other rights

The right of the people to keep and bear arms is the best way to protect all of our other rights; it helps keep us safe and it can also be a great source of recreation. We must take the Second Amendment just as seriously as the rest of our rights as Americans. Congress must stop practices which hurt these rights, including restrictions on the ability to purchase, transport, store, or possess arms on public lands or on an individual's private property.

As a U.S. Senator, I will work to improve gun rights and fight against inappropriate judicial tricks such as using the Commerce Clause to justify taking away our freedoms. With the threat of rising crime due to our crashing economy, it's more important than ever that our representatives be 100% committed to defending our right to keep and bear arms.

Shane Osborn: Oppose any gun or ammunition ban

Shane is a lifetime member of the NRA. He knows that Nebraskans value their 2nd Amendment rights and will be an unapologetic defender of our constitutional freedom to bear arms.

Democrats in Washington have been making a strong push to pass legislation that would pose drastic threats to our freedom. Shane will oppose any gun or ammunition ban that comes to the Senate floor for a vote and will be a voice for law-abiding citizens who don't deserve to have their rights infringed upon.

Nels Mitchell: High priority on right to hunt & fish on public lands

Mitchell said that, after jobs and the economy, he would focus on protecting Idahoans' right to hunt, fish and recreate on public lands. "Our public lands belong to all of us, and they should not be turned over to the state where they could be put up for sale."

Dan Sullivan: Right to bear arms is an individual right

Defending and fighting for Alaskans' Second Amendment rights: Sullivan has consistently fought to defend Alaskans' individual right to bear arms. As Attorney General, he was part of a briefing to the US Supreme Court with other state Attorneys General encouraging the Court to hear the case McDonald v. City of Chicago. The Supreme Court accepted the case, and Sullivan and other Attorneys General filed an additional brief to the Court arguing that it should hold--for the first time in American history--that the Second Amendment right to bear arms is an individual right that applies to all American citizens. In the landmark McDonald case, the Supreme Court did just that, thereby dramatically enhancing the Second Amendment rights of all Alaskans.

As DNR Commissioner, Sullivan's department partnered with the National Rifle Association to help finance the future construction of an outdoor shooting range in the Matanuska Susitna Valley.

Rob Maness: 2nd Amendment is the right that ensures all others

The right to keep and bear arms predates our Constitution and was considered so important that our Founding Fathers listed it second, right after religious freedom and freedom of speech. The 2nd Amendment is the right that ensures all others, and therefore must be protected at all costs. Senator Landrieu voted against an amendment that would have prevented the US from entering into the UN Arms Trade Treaty. I will fight to ensure that no one tramples on your guaranteed rights.

Lee Bright: Constitutional Carry Amendment: no permits needed

One of the basic rights afforded by our Constitution is the right to bear arms, as was outlined in the Second Amendment. This right has been under constant attack in recent years.

Lee Bright strongly believes that the Constitution should be taken literally when it says that our right to bear arms "shall not be infringed". This means that the government has no authority to prohibit the free exercise of this liberty, which is why Lee proposed his Constitutional Carry Amendment. This bill would allow S.C. citizens to protect themselves at all times without the need to ask the government for permission first. Other states that allow guns to be carried in public have seen drops in crime rates, while states that enforce strict gun laws see a noticeable rise in crime. Other pro-Second Amendment bills sponsored by Lee include the Firearms Freedom Act, Firearms Liberty Act, along with many others that promote the rights of gun owners.

Doug Truax: Hearings on "Stand Your Ground" laws don't address issue

Doug Truax called on incumbent Dick Durbin to honestly attempt to address the tragic slaughter of young African-American males in Chicago instead of launching press-friendly proposals that will produce no results. Since the George Zimmerman trial, Durbin has announced a new ideological-based hearing in Washington on "Stand Your Ground" laws that won't save one life in Illinois.

Truax said. "While Chicago continues to be a shooting gallery where our children are murdered every night, Dick Durbin holds ideological hearings in Washington that have no bearing on the root causes of the killings."

Truax said as senator he will address the root causes of inner city violence: lack of jobs, lack of quality education, a growing dependency class, and family breakdown. "We can talk around this important issue or we can try to solve it," Truax said. "Dick Durbin is the master at avoiding the hard truths we must confront if we are to save precious lives."

Jim Rubens: Individual right to bear arms is inviolably guaranteed

2nd Amendment Rights: The individual right to keep and bear arms is inviolably guaranteed under both the US and New Hampshire constitutions. If elected, I will vote to defend law-abiding citizens' right to own and to use firearms for all lawful purposes. While serving in the state senate, I earned an "A" rating from the NRA.

Pat McGeehan: Never infringe an individual's right to keep and bear arms

I will never vote for any legislation that infringes on an individual's right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment must be kept sacred and protected at all levels.

During my time in the West Virginia House of Delegates, I introduced the Firearms Freedom Act, which would prevent federal regulations on firearms manufactured and sold within West Virginia. I received an A rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) for my stance on guns.

Sam Clovis: 2nd Amendment is about liberty, not just gun rights

I am a member of the National Rifle Association, the Hawkeye Rifle and Pistol Club and a holder of a concealed-carry permit. Suffice it to say that I will always support and defend Second Amendment protections. However, protecting the Second Amendment is about much more than gun rights.

Liberty is the second unalienable right mentioned in our Declaration of Independence. Liberty, which is more than freedom, deals with the exercise of free will, the exercise of conscience and actions that protect the soul. The Second Amendment is the complete manifestation of all these factors as we live our lives in America. Liberty must be protected at all costs.

Alison Grimes: Proud of long-held sporting & hunting traditions

Today Alison Lundergan Grimes released the following statement: "As an NRA member, my strong support for the Second Amendment is unquestioned. I am proud of Kentucky's long-held gun ownership, sporting and hunting traditions. It is unfortunate that Senator McConnell is desperate to mislead Kentucky voters about my strong support for the Second Amendment.

As an NRA member, my strong support for the Second Amendment is unquestioned. I am proud of Kentucky's long-held gun ownership, sporting and hunting traditions. It is unfortunate that Senator McConnell is desperate to mislead Kentucky voters about my strong support for the Second Amendment. In the Senate, I will protect my fellow Kentuckians' right to keep and bear arms. Whenever he's not busy pandering to Washington lobbyists, I welcome Senator McConnell to come shoot with me at the range any day."

Joe Carr: Second Amendment rights safeguard all other rights

We must never forget that many of our country's founders sacrificed their lives and fortunes in order to secure our basic human rights--which are enumerated in our Constitution. Our rights come from God--not man--and our founders designed our foundational documents to protect and defend these God-given rights. The one constitutional right that safeguards all other rights is the second amendment--the right to bear arms. As a lifetime member of the NRA and Gun Owners of America, I pledge to promote, protect and defend every law-abiding Americans' ability to keep and bear arms for personal safety, to defend their property, and to enjoy hunting and sporting. I will also fight to defend the 2nd amendment to protect our liberty in the event we ever find ourselves fighting against a tyrannical government to uphold our sacred honor.

Matt Bevin: Second Amendment is the lynchpin of the Bill of Rights

Matt & his wife are both proud, conceal-carry gun owners and Matt believes the Second Amendment is the lynchpin of the Bill of Rights, as it was designed to protect all of the other Amendments. The right to bear arms is not just limited to ownership but includes the right to carry as well. Matt will fight to fully restore the Second Amendment by pushing for national right to carry legislation. He will also fight off any attempt to dictate the types of guns and ammunition that Kentuckians choose to own.

Matthew Whitaker: Lifetime defender of the Second Amendment

Protect the Second Amendment: I share the founding fathers belief that personal liberty is the bedrock principle of our Democracy. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and defender of the Second Amendment, I have never wavered in protecting this unalienable right. I defended this right as both Legal Counsel for the Iowa Firearms Coalition and Local Counsel to the National Rifle Association. The Second Amendment is just as important today as when it was first written.

Mead Treadwell: Law-abiding citizens have the right to keep and bear arms

The Second Amendment protects our right to self-defense. Law-abiding citizens have the right to keep and bear arms, plain and simple. I will defend the right for Alaskans to defend their families and their homes. The U.S. Senate Majority today is working to erode our Second Amendment rights and Mark Begich supports their leadership. I will oppose all efforts to water down the Second Amendment.

Owen Hill: Protect the right to own & use guns for law-abiding citizens

Guns have always been an important part of American history. Both the US and Colorado constitutions protect the right to own and use guns for law-abiding citizens. Unfortunately, criminals will always take advantage of people and violate the law. When bad people disregard the laws, the only possible response is to allow everyone the equal chance to defend themselves. My wife, your wife, our mothers and daughters and everyone we know should have the chance to defend themselves. That is why I sponsored the bill in the Senate to give every law-abiding citizen the legal protection to carry a gun for self defense without having to ask permission from a bureaucrat.

I also had the privilege of speaking against the unconstitutional and ineffective laws put in place this year that will make it harder for people to protect themselves in what appears to be an increasingly violent world.

Milton Wolf: Self-defense is a God-given right

I will not apologize for believing that self-defense is a God-given right that cannot be taken away by man. I believe the 2nd Amendment means exactly what it says: that our right to bear arms shall not be infringed, and I believe that applies to the individual, not just a militia. My wife Karrie and I are both life members of the NRA and we both proudly have our conceal carry licenses.

Joni Ernst: Staunch defender of the Second Amendment

Protecting Second Amendment Rights: Joni is a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and opposes efforts by the government to infringe upon this fundamental right. She is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and received an "A" rating from the NRA for her efforts to protect the rights of gun owners as a member of the state senate. Joni holds a concealed carry permit, carries a Smith and Wesson 9mm, and is Army qualified on the 9mm and M16.

David Perdue: We have ample gun laws on the books now

Growing up in Middle Georgia, I have been hunting since I was young, but I understand the 2nd Amendment is not only about hunting. It is hard for me to question the wisdom of the Founders. They crafted a Constitution that has only been amended 27 times in over 225 years. Ten amendments were their own, designed to explicitly protect certain rights. The 2nd Amendment is clear. We have ample gun laws on the books now, and I believe we should focus on enforcing them.

Champ Edmunds: 2nd Amendment is about our right to defend ourselves

I am a gun owner, concealed weapon permit holder, and hunter. The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting, it is about our right to defend ourselves and our families. I support the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms of their choosing. I will not vote for gun control measures, and I will not vote to confirm anti-gun judges. I would not vote for any international treaties that deny us our 2nd Amendment rights or other personal freedoms.
