Survey of 2014 Senate campaign websites: on Homeland Security

Nathan LaFrance: Meta-data collection of phone records is unconstitutional

The US Constitution is clear--Americans have a right to privacy that cannot be violated by the federal government except upon probably cause resulting in a warrant describing the person, place or things to be seized.

Revelations about current NSA domestic spying programs, being run under the direction of the Obama Administration, have shown an almost complete disregard for our Constitutional rights.

Contrary to administration claims, large-scale meta-data collection of Americans' phone records is a violation of privacy. Through this meta-data, the federal government has access to a tremendous amount of personal information on innocent Americans, including who we speak to, how often we speak with people, where we are located when we make or receive calls and the duration of our calls.

New details continue to emerge on other NSA programs, such as email and internet monitoring. As Americans, we must stand NOW and fight for our rights. Nathan LaFrance will fight to reign in the NSA.

John Buckley: National Defense Authorization Act is Big Brother spying

A government big enough to give you all the things you want is also big enough to take away from you all that you have. Whether the government is acting as Big Brother or as Big Nanny, it is a threat to our liberty, to our right to live our lives as we each see fit. There is a unifying thread to many issues of privacy and property rights: the National Security Agency's warrantless spying on phone calls, the authority affirmed by the National Defense Authorization Act to confine American citizens without Constitutional protection whatsoever--indefinitely!--on mere suspicion of "association" (whatever that means) with terrorism, law enforcement agencies tracing the movements of our automobiles, the increased militarization of domestic law enforcement: These actions reveal a government out of control, treating Americans as conquered subjects. It reminds one of the Hunger Games, where the "districts" had to be kept down lest they undermine the authority of the central government.

Randall Batson: Bring our troops home; close bases overseas

While stationed overseas in the Navy, in some places the people of that nation protested our presence. Nations and people should be given respect. Our soldiers standing on their soil isn't the best diplomacy.

Bring our troops home from foreign lands and defend America. Claims that this is isolationism or being naive are incorrect. Peaceful trade and commerce benefits all and is not isolationism but expands peace and prosperity. Examples are our former enemies Vietnam, Japan, and Germany.

Gordon Ball: Ensure our troops receive the support & resources they need

Supporting our troops and their families is an imperative we all share. We must do what it takes to ensure our troops receive the support and resources they need to defend our freedom and security. From providing top-of-the-line body armor, ensuring fair pay for service members, and easing the transition to civilian life for returning service members, I will fight for the benefits earned by Tennesseans who serve in our Armed Forces.

As Senator, I will do all I can to support service members, their families, and veterans. I support fully funding the Veterans Administration, cutting red-tape to help make claims-servicing easier and more streamlined, and improving the quality of life for veterans by increasing compensation and guaranteeing world- class health care in state-of-the-art medical facilities.

I will also work hard to help ease the return to civilian life by supporting a strong GI Bill and ensuring that veterans have world-class medical care and realistic job opportunities.

Kevin Wade: Welcome home America's veterans and serve them

AMERICA'S VETERANS... A WELCOME HOME WITH AMERICA'S RESPECT AND OUR OWN NATIONAL OBLIGATION TO NOW SERVE THEM

Our freedoms are assured by the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. These heroes stand watch protecting our families from those who intend to bring harm to our nation. On their return to civilian life, their example of duty and service transforms to a national obligation and duty to serve them as veterans.

As your U.S. Senator in Washington know that Kevin Wade is your friend, voice, and advocate. Kevin Wade will stand watch for you now. WELCOME HOME!

Jeanne Shaheen: Tireless advocate for keeping our commitment to veterans

Jeanne Shaheen is a tireless advocate for keeping our commitment to veterans. In the U.S. Senate, she has worked to provide tax credits to businesses that hire veterans, introduced legislation to help veterans start their own businesses, and led efforts to expand care for returning veterans and their families. The bipartisan Sanders-McCain legislation passed by the Senate last month included language from Senator Shaheen to provide New Hampshire veterans greater access to health care. The bill would allow veterans living more than 20 miles away from a VA facility, in a state like NH which does not have a full service VA hospital, to receive care at certain non-VA medical facilities.

Jeanne Shaheen has been outraged by the backlog at the Department of Veteran's Affairs. She has been an outspoken critic of the issues there and introduced legislation to hire additional local VA staff to work to eliminate the backlog and to fund legal clinics that would help veterans get their care faster.

Jim Risch: Do everything to maintain a fully-equipped military

The primary constitutional obligation of the federal government is to protect and defend the people, land, and resources of the United States of America. As a United States Senator, I am committed to maintaining a well-trained, fully-equipped military. I will do everything in my power to ensure that our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and national guardsmen and women have the resources they need to carry out and complete their missions.

Connie Johnson: The debt we owe our Veterans is non-negotiable

Our Veterans deserve a federal government that supports them and their families after that government sends those men and women to fight in war. Connie will work to make sure Veterans have access to endless, affordable health care--physical and mental health services. She'll work to provide job training for all Veterans as well as integration programs for our Veterans returning from war. The debt we owe our Veterans is non-negotiable. It's our government's role, duty, and responsibility.

Terry Adams: Service to Citizens: more veterans' benefits

Every person who serves honorably in defense of our nation deserves a fair shake. Veterans across the board have had an unemployment rate at 4% above the national rate and that is unacceptable. Our nation needs a Service to Citizens program that begins in boot camp and continues throughout a military career.

It is unacceptable that disabled veterans and their caregivers have a backlog of 500,000 benefit claims for services and benefits already earned. It is equally unacceptable that there are 900,000 veterans who are on food assistance and Congress seeks to cut further.

It is the duty of this Nation to take care of those who have volunteered to, if necessary, make the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Perhaps it is because the number of veterans in Congress is at the lowest point since World War II that these issues are not at the forefront of the Congressional agenda. This has to change, not only because our national security is at stake but also because it is the right thing to do.

Terry Adams: Dependence on OPEC leads to foreign entanglements & wars

We have been talking about reducing our dependence on oil and gas for a long time now, yet we are still at the mercy of OPEC. Lest we forget, the members of OPEC are Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Libya, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Angola, and Gabon. At this stage in our history, it is unacceptable to be dependent in anyway upon this group of countries. This unholy alliance with OPEC is risky at best and certainly has the potential to lead us into foreign entanglements, wars, and conflicts that are more about our energy needs than about our long term national and strategic interests.

Terry Adams: Security depends on economic strength AND military might

Our national security not only depends upon our military might but also upon our economic strength in the world. We cannot live up to our obligations with our allies, spread democracy around the globe, and be a force for good and human rights without an economy that is as strong and powerful as our military.

Dave Domina: No cuts to veterans' pensions or benefits

Veterans' Benefits. I refuse to cut the budget by cutting Veterans' pensions or benefits, or the promised pensions or Veterans benefits for those serving and firmly oppose the Ryan budget scheme which would do exactly this. My opponent takes the opposite view, at least as to those now serving; he has modified his view as to those who are already Veterans with completed service since his political campaign began. Only my position will protect Veterans, and those now serving.

Joyce Dickerson: Take action against neglect of our veterans

I am the wife of a veteran. Whenever I walk into a VA Hospital alongside my husband, one of the first signs I see posted is that of President Lincoln's promise: "To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan."

It breaks my heart to learn of the neglectful treatment that veterans from across our great country are experiencing. And in the worst cases, veterans have actually died while waiting for care from several of our VA Hospitals. With proper and timely care, these deaths may have been prevented. We are responsible for looking after those who have looked after us, protecting our freedoms.

Battling this kind of neglect of our veterans is why we need bold and courageous leadership in Washington. As US Senator, I can and will go to battle for our veterans and their families. You can count on me to protect President Lincoln's promise to our veterans. Let's take action!

Jeff Bell: Maintain strong defense; don't scale back anti-terrorism

We must maintain a strong national defense and also promote democracy and freedom where we can when we can.

I agree with Gov. Chris Christie's rebuke of those who want to scale back our anti-terror efforts. It is vital that our government institutions have the resources and ability to do their jobs aimed at protecting us. Our free society is dependent on our national security.

Monica Wehby: Put the needs and care of our veterans first

Our nation's veterans are entitled to every gratitude and accommodation our country can afford to give them in honor of their special contribution to our nation's freedoms. As our soldiers return home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we must not lose sight of their sacrifice and the commitment our government owes them for their service. As our U.S. Senator, Monica will put the needs and care of our veterans first. She would also work to revitalize and help streamline the VA medical system. She has a long history in medical policy and reform and will make that a special emphasis during her tenure as Oregon's U.S. Senator. We must take exceptional care of those who have voluntarily put themselves in harm's way to protect and defend our country.

Monica believes in the idea that the best way to keep America and the world safe is by keeping America's military strong and unrivaled. As Teddy Roosevelt said, "Walk softly, but carry a big stick." John Walsh: Worked to prohibit warrantless cell phone tracking

Standing Strong for our Civil Liberties In Montana: we know how important it is to protect our civil liberties and freedoms from the federal government. While it is imperative that we maintain our national security and protect ourselves against acts of terrorism, we cannot do so at the expense of the freedoms that we hold dear, including our right to privacy. I'm proud to have worked with Governor Bullock on passing a law requiring state and local governments to get warrants before accessing personal cell phone data-- becoming the first state in history to prohibit warrantless cell phone tracking.

For too long we have let ourselves get distracted by fundamental disagreements that will never be resolved. David Clements: Defend the missions of our military labs and bases

New Mexico has a storied history of being at the forefront of protecting our country and must continue to play a vital role in our national defense and related research. I am fully committed to fighting for and defending the missions of our labs & bases.

The defense of the nation against foreign military aggression is the most critical role the federal government possesses. In providing for the common defense, we must always maintain the most modern and efficient military, capable of a prompt and overwhelming response to any attack on the United States. This power includes maintaining superior intelligence in the field, communication technology, and anti-ballistic missile capabilities that are suitable to detect and decisively counter any strategic danger.

Senator Tom Udall has consistently failed to defend our installations. Udall played politics and chose not to vote for a bill that would have funded our labs and bases, leaving many hard working families in a state of uncertainty.

Terri Lynn Land: Peace cannot be attained through weakness

Some politicians in Washington believe that America must appease dictators and international organizations. They would have us weaken our military, enter into treaties that restrict our liberties and which surrender our security and sovereignty with the false hope this might bring peace. History has shown that peace cannot be attained through weakness. These policies would only serve to weaken America. The greatest gains for peace and freedom during our lifetime have occurred when America has held steadfast in our beliefs and stood strong in defending those beliefs.

We must return to a commonsense foreign policy that puts America's interests first. I believe defending liberty at home and abroad should be the key objective of our foreign policy.

Milton Wolf: America's military should remain unrivaled

Imagine a foreign policy where America's military remains unrivaled and our soldiers know that we have their backs just as they have ours, but we don't run into every civil war and skirmish when it does not threaten America's vital national security interests.

Imagine a government that does not have access to your cell phone calls or email password.

Rob Maness: Cut red tape standing in the way of our heroes

I will fight to secure funding for our military forces at appropriate levels. President Obama and Senator Landrieu's plans to cut our military across the board without a well-planned, comprehensive strategy must be stopped. I will ensure that we will always honor our commitments to veterans who have honorably served. The Department of Veterans Affairs must be reformed to ensure that we accomplish this goal and cut red tape standing in the way of our heroes.

Lee Bright: Our liberty depends on a strong military

South Carolina has a long tradition of supporting our nation's military. In the U.S. Senate, Lee will carry on that tradition.

Lee believes one of the core functions of our federal government, as required by the Constitution, is providing America's security. After all, our liberty depends on a strong military.

The Obama administration and Congressional liberals have skillfully used the "sequester" to gut critical defense programs and shift that spending to wasteful domestic spending. Lee will work with other conservatives to make sure our military remains second to none. That doesn't mean that the Pentagon should have a free hand to purchase every new technology a defense contractor comes up with. In the U.S. Senate, Lee will be a deficit hawk with every aspect of the Federal budget, encouraging policy-makers to look for efficiencies in defense as in every other government program.

Michelle Nunn: One-stop shop for veterans, like Hiring Our Heroes

We must continue to help our veterans find jobs and build careers. Initiatives like the US Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Heroes are doing great work putting veterans to work. And veterans should be allowed to use the technical and professional skills they acquired in the armed forces without being forced to navigate needless bureaucracies. The Department of Defense's Military Credentialing and Licensing Task Force has made a good start breaking down some of these credentialing barriers.

Although there are many resources available for returning veterans, what has been missing is a one-stop shop. We need one place for anyone in need to go for these housing, educational, mental health and other services provided by generous and grateful Americans. One new collaborative initiative of this kind is the Community Blueprint within Points of Light.

Jim Rubens: NSA gathering data on citizens is abusive & unconstitutional

[The administration] has publicly acknowledged that the National Security Agency collects and stores private communications data (excepting content) from Verizon and other carriers involving hundreds of millions of ordinary American citizens. This has been ongoing since at least 2006. For the likely purpose of storing and mining this massive stream of past and realtime data, NSA is building a $2 billion data warehouse north of Provo, Utah, slated for completion later this year. Indicating its immensity, this facility will consume 65 megawatts of power and 1.7 million gallons of cooling water per day.

We cannot trust that this data will not be abused, because NSA grants access by tens of thousands of government employees and private contractors. Should I be elected to the U.S. Senate, I will speak out unabashedly against and work to defund and bar such constitutional breaches.

Matt Silverstein: Support the strongest, most dominant military in the world

Matt supports the United States having the strongest, most dominant military in the world. He agrees with the Joint Chiefs that we need to modernize the military, stop paying for redundant and antiquated weapons systems, and always make sure our brave troops always have the best protection.

Matt is concerned about military readiness due to inefficiencies and redundancies. This reflects the broken culture in Washington DC of constant conflict as opposed to working together in creative cooperation. There's no excuse for our military to be inefficient and Matt will work every day to fight for Oklahoma's military installations, which are being devastated by partisanship and gridlock. Partisan finger pointing is obnoxious and it doesn't advance our collective goal to secure our nation and strengthen Oklahoma's economy with smart investments. Matt believes we need to consolidate redundant programs and zero out ineffective or outdated programs.

I will oppose legislation such as the PATRIOT Act, the recent unconstitutional clauses within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), CISPA, SOPA, and any other bill that infringes on the 4th and 5th Amendments within the Bill of Rights. Civil liberty and private property must be kept sacred, and I will always fight to make sure it is.

Sam Clovis: Military holds a special place in fabric of American society

Today, we Americans enjoy the protection of the greatest military force ever assembled. We continue to attract into our armed services the very best young men and women who sacrifice so much to make sure we are safe. My father was a veteran. I am a veteran and my son and daughter-in-law are veterans. The military holds a special place in my life and in the fabric of American society. I was honored to have served this nation and will, as a Senator, work tirelessly to ensure our military forces have the best equipment & training available.

Today, we face a staggering economy. Through the ill-conceived sequestration apparatus in place today, we are taking half of the required spending cuts out of the Department of Defense. There is little we can do about the sequestration structure now, but as a Senator, I would fight to make sure that our military readiness received top priority.

Cory Booker: Maintain the strongest military force in the world

America has, and must continue to maintain, the strongest military force in the world. Our fighting men and women deserve the equipment they need to accomplish their missions, responsible planning necessary to ensure their success, and the care they were promised when they return home. These things are not negotiable.

The military threats of the future look very different than the challenges we faced in the 80s, 90s, or even just a few years ago, and America's military needs to keep up. Without a major adversary like the Soviet Union, smaller nontraditional conflicts and interventions are more likely to be the rule, even as we refocus on asserting power in the Pacific. That is why military spending should be driven by a strategy to meet future threats, rather than an arbitrary number invented for political posturing or an attempt to fight the wars of past.

Cory Booker: Irresponsible to spend on irrelevant weapon systems

For too long, Congress has been spending money on weapons our military doesn't want, weapons envisioned for wars never fought against enemies that no longer exist. That doesn't make us any safer--in fact, it makes us less safe by siphoning funds away from essential training and spending on relevant weapons systems. This irresponsible spending is even less acceptable at a time when sequestration is forcing across-the-board cuts--to military priorities essential and superfluous alike.

Matt Bevin: Protect national security without violating civil liberties

Politicians often present us with the false choice between protecting our civil liberties and building a strong national defense. There is no reason we can't rigorously fight terrorism and other national security threats without violating the constitutional protections of our civil liberties. The news of the NSA's extensive wiretapping program is just the latest example that our government has gone too far.

Matt believes we have the right to defend our country and our allies when our security and freedom are being threatened, but we cannot sacrifice our constitutional principles in the process. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, if we trample on our liberty in the name of security, we will have neither liberty nor security. Alison Grimes: Reduce veterans' services backlog; support new vets jobs law

Washington has fallen short of honoring our commitment to our veterans. Our veterans should not struggle to find jobs or access care. Kentucky is the home of over 350,000 veterans, the fourth largest in the nation. It is a disgrace that so many veterans across Kentucky have compensation claims pending, more than 10,000 in the Louisville VA backlog alone. I'm shocked that Mitch McConnell opposed plans to reduce this backlog and voted against veterans jobs legislation. This is wrong.

I'm committed to serving Kentucky's 350,000 veterans and I will fight for the quality health care, benefits and treatment they have earned. We must expand education and training opportunities for service members and veterans, facilitating public/private partnerships that help them translate their military skills for the civilian workforce. We must improve access to health care services, including mental health, prosthetic care and wound regeneration.

Dan Sullivan: Ensure a strong national defense & stand up for our veterans

We will focus on protecting Alaskans: our families, individual rights, fiscal future, and security. This means the bedrock defense of the Second Amendment, ensuring a strong national defense, and standing up for our veterans--all of our veterans--who have defended our great nation for decades.

I see some of my Marine Corps brothers in the audience today. As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, I know how important it is for our veterans to get the support they have earned--but are not getting from Washington today. This has to change! Over the past four years, we have gotten big things done for Alaska in all of these areas -- REAL RESULTS, NOT JUST TALK.

We did this by applying conservative principles--less government and more freedom--with dogged determination to address Alaska's challenges. But we must do more, and Washington needs to help, not be the obstacle that it is today with its broken institutions and policies that clearly aim to limit Alaska's full potential.

Rick supervised the Federal recovery response to flooding in North Dakota and South Dakota; wild fires in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota; tornadoes in Spencer, SD as well as on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. During his tenure at FEMA he was called upon to provide support to local law enforcement during the Columbine tragedy.

In addition to Federal disaster response, Rick lead a "historic" conference for 28 tribal nations within Region VIII. At the conference, Rick and FEMA worked to establish more effective emergency management coordination and to improve services to underserved communities on tribal reservations. The conference established the Tribal Emergency Management Coordination Council.

Shane Osborn: Strong voice for America's Veterans

Shane knows we must keep the promises made to our Veterans and their families. As a Veteran who served in Afghanistan, his training and service in the U.S. Navy provided a firsthand understanding of the challenges confronted by Veterans and their families, especially the transition back to civilian life.

Shane helped launch a company that helps disabled Veterans find jobs and start their own businesses. He co-founded the Nebraska Soldiers Foundation to help military families cope with the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and is involved with a foundation supporting Navy Seals and their families.

As a U.S. Senator, Shane will be a strong voice for America's Veterans.

Joni Ernst: Strong national defense makes the world is a safer place

Joni believes in a strong national defense because she knows the world is a safer place when America is the strongest nation on the planet. She believes that military readiness cannot be allowed to fall victim to Washington politics or bureaucratic maneuvering. Joni also believes that American foreign policy must be consistent and strong--never giving our enemies hesitation as to America's resolve to defend herself and her interests across the globe, whether by diplomatic means or use of force.

Joni Ernst: I'm a veteran; honor and care for our nation's veterans

Honoring America's Heroes: Our Veterans: As a Lt. Colonel and battalion commander in the Iowa Army National Guard, Joni knows first-hand the incredible service, and sacrifices, our men and women in uniform have given, and continue to provide, our great nation. In the senate, she will fight as hard for them, and their families, as they have fought for us. That means caring for wounded warriors, streamlining the VA benefit system, improving veteran education and job training programs, and accounting for all military personnel, from every avenue, to ensure no soldier, sailor, airmen, marine or coastguardsmen is ever left behind.

Corey Stapleton: Remain ever vigilant & continuously improve our readiness

As a former Navy officer I will always be a close ally with all active duty military and veterans. I am an 11 year veteran myself. I received the Montana National Guard's "Guardian of the Guard" Award in 2012 for my career of legislation on behalf of veterans. I firmly feel that we need to remain ever vigilant to threats against America, and continuously improve our readiness and abilities against those who would harm our country.

Murray Sabrin: Don't police world at behest of military-industrial complex

America should not send tens of billions of dollars overseas, which is mistakenly called "foreign aid," nor should our soldiers police the world or invade other countries at the behest of the military-industrial complex. That means reducing military spending by tens and tens and tens of billions of dollars so we have a defense budget instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars to maintain an overseas empire.

The federal government is a financial basket case and Romney wants to increase military spending by another $100 billion when the federal deficit was $1.3 trillion last year. So savvy, successful executive Mitt Romney wants to increase the deficit or will raise taxes to keep American troops all over the world and build more weapons of mass destruction while the unemployment rate is still above 9% and the unofficial rate according to some estimates is more than 20%.

Murray Sabrin: Americans are all terrorist suspects, according to DHS & TSA

The terrorists are coming! The terrorists are coming! That is the unmistakable message of DHS and the TSA: not only are Middle Eastern terrorists coming to get us, but also every American is a terrorist suspect, because the federal government does not know if any one of us has became a "traitor" willing to blow himself or herself up on a commercial airline flight.

Inasmuch as we are all suspected terrorists now, the federal government is making sure that a "shoe bomber" or an "underwear bomber" does not board any commercial flight. Thus, a so-called porno scanner must examine all airline passengers, and those who refuse to be bombarded with dangerous X-rays will have to be pat-downed by rubber gloved TSA agents who may be transmitting diseases to airline passengers. However, high-level government officials and other exempt individuals will not have to be X-rayed or "fondled" TSA agents. In other words, big-shot Americans will get a pass at the airport because they are big shots.
