But that is not the end of the story. We can make Oregon stronger! We can create jobs and opportunity by encouraging home grown business in Oregon. Our true strength comes from Oregon's skilled workforce and bright, talented and creative entrepreneurs who can help grow our economy and put people back to work.
We need to embrace Oregon's potential and lower the barriers to business and job creation. It is imperative that we invest in the future by promoting the development of new ventures and new technologies that will create new jobs and new tax revenue. The legislature has fallen down on the job and it is sending the wrong message to local small businesses.
We need to re-brand our state, from "Oregon--fourth highest unemployment in the nation" to "Oregon--open for business."
Education is the great equalizer in our society. Getting our money's worth out of our education system means giving our kids a globally competitive chance in the future. That has to be our focus.
To do so, we must use technology to empower teachers and provide better educational content at a fraction of the cost, increase the array of educational options available to our children and encourage families and students to choose the education that's best for them.
The answer cannot be to simply spend more money on education--we must spend more wisely, invest more carefully, and be better stewards
A "Green" revolution in cost competitive renewable energy is coming no matter what we decide here in Oregon. But the question we must ask is "Will Oregon lead the way or follow along behind?"
We can and should be at the forefront of developing renewable energy technology. This will be a major priority for me and is an area where I will work across party lines to find opportunities and sensible solutions
We can make healthcare more affordable--and expand its availability. Those two principals should not be contradictory. To do it, we need to broaden our focus from just curing those who are already sick to include educating people about good health choices.
We can encourage health and wellness, shift to an outcome based system for health care, and enact common sense malpractice reform so the patient and doctor are driving healthcare decisions, not lawyers and insurance companies.
