On Immigration: Opposes housing refugee immigrants in military facilities

Today Senator Jim Inhofe was forced to face his flip-flop on immigration when questioned about his 2008 vote to house immigrants in military facilities. Recently, Inhofe has sharpened his attacks on the practice of using U.S. military installations to house immigrant children who are fleeing violence and exploitation. Only today was he forced to come clean that he had indeed voted for the law that put them in those military facilities.

Contrary to his previous position, Inhofe now purports to see a host of ills stemming from the protection of these compromised children. "Senator Inhofe was part of the problem that created this situation in the first place, and now he is running and hiding from his own vote as a U.S. Senator," said Matt Silverstein, Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate. "What Senator Inhofe is failing to tell voters is that the law he voted for is the real cause of this border crisis."

On Health Care: Don't re-open the Medicare prescription drug "donut hole"

Instead of protecting and preserving these vital programs, Jim Inhofe plans to end Medicare as we know it. By a proposal supported by Jim Inhofe, thousands of Oklahoma's current seniors would see their out of pocket costs increased by nearly $6,000 per year and forced back into the prescription drug "donut hole." Jim Inhofe believes that in order to avoid cutting benefits in the future, we must cut benefits now. Matt will not support policies that require senior's to foot the bill.

On Budget & Economy: Ban earmarks & cut spending to reduce debt

We must take responsible steps to deal with the federal debt or it will deal with us. If we fail to reduce the debt it will quickly begin swallowing a bigger and bigger piece of the federal budget that should be going to prudent investments.

We need to stop wasting our money on bad investments. Matt agrees that we must permanently ban earmarks. We will never get our fiscal house in order if we follow the advice of career politicians like Jim Inhofe who defend pork barrel politics such as earmarks, which allows every member of Congress to waste our money on their own personal pet projects. Too many politicians, Republicans and Democrats, think big spending is okay as long as it's "their spending" and that has to change.

We'll never get our fiscal house in order with pork barrel politics and Matt will bring a breath of fresh air by attacking the waste, fraud, and abuse that comes from BOTH political parties in Washington DC.

On Civil Rights: Equal pay concept: level the field for women

Real Equality for Women: Equal pay concept.

Women are paid less than men for the same work and that must change. Matt is a husband, father of a two-year old daughter, and grew up in a household as the older brother to two younger sisters. He is an adamant fighter for women. Matt has pledged to support forward thinking policies that help level the field for women. He is also a strong advocate for the Violence Against Women's Act, equality for women in the military, and overall women's health issues. Congress should never turn a blind eye to inequality towards women and we should all support common sense efforts to help local officials address these inequalities. The first step is admitting they exist.

On Corporations: Cut corporate taxes and corporate loopholes

Matt will support a tax system that makes sense for businesses and individuals alike. Our corporate taxes are among the highest in the world and that makes our businesses less competitive around the world. However, corporate tax loopholes reduce taxes for the biggest corporations while the entrepreneurs and small businesses that are creating new jobs are saddled with paying close to the full rate. Matt is determined to work towards a tax system that works for small businesses not Wall Street. Matt supports eliminating all special interest corporate tax loopholes and reducing the overall rate to 20 percent or less.

On Education: Sufficiently fund public education, with national standards

We will never solve our nation's problems if we continue to fail our children in the classroom. Education is largely the responsibility of the state and Matt will support governance structures which hold leaders responsible, while giving them the tools to effectuate change. We should always have accountability to the local school districts and taxpayers.

Matt supports sufficiently funding education and setting clearly-articulated national standards and expectations for core subject areas, while allowing states and local districts to determine how best to make sure that all students are reaching those standards. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics are critical to building a stronger, more qualified workforce and a stronger economy.

On Energy & Oil: Lead on new energy as well as old, including in-state coal

Hard work, entrepreneurialism, and free markets are the pillars of Oklahoma--that is why our energy industry has thrived. It's not because of government, or any politician, it's despite government. Oklahoma has an abundance of natural gas as well as solar and wind resources, which Jim Inhofe has fought against.

Our approach to energy must put Oklahoma first. Matt won't allow special interests to guide his energy policy and he won't promote out of state resources over Oklahoma's own resources.

Matt believes the free market should guide our energy policy. Oklahoma is in a unique position to lead on new energy as well as old and that is what we should be doing in a 21st Century economy. Oklahoma energy can and will lead our nation towards energy independence and away from the grasp of OPEC.

On Homeland Security: Support the strongest, most dominant military in the world

Matt supports the United States having the strongest, most dominant military in the world. He agrees with the Joint Chiefs that we need to modernize the military, stop paying for redundant and antiquated weapons systems, and always make sure our brave troops always have the best protection.

Matt is concerned about military readiness due to inefficiencies and redundancies. This reflects the broken culture in Washington DC of constant conflict as opposed to working together in creative cooperation. There's no excuse for our military to be inefficient and Matt will work every day to fight for Oklahoma's military installations, which are being devastated by partisanship and gridlock. Partisan finger pointing is obnoxious and it doesn't advance our collective goal to secure our nation and strengthen Oklahoma's economy with smart investments. Matt believes we need to consolidate redundant programs and zero out ineffective or outdated programs.

On Social Security: Medicare & Social Security are sacred promises to seniors

We must protect and strengthen Medicare and Social Security. These are sacred promises to our seniors who worked hard their entire lives. Partisan gridlock and career politicians are threatening to jeopardize these programs for our children and grandchildren. Matt's practical approach to investing wisely when we can afford it and cutting wasteful spending and attacking waste, fraud, and abuse is an important first step in keeping these programs solvent.

Instead of protecting and preserving these vital programs, Jim Inhofe plans to end Medicare as we know it: thousands of Oklahoma's current seniors would see their out of pocket costs increased by nearly $6,000 per year and forced back into the prescription drug "donut hole." Jim Inhofe believes that in order to avoid cutting benefits in the future, we must cut benefits now. We must balance the budget and get our fiscal house in order but Matt will not support policies that require senior's to foot the bill.
