On Civil Rights: Support equal pay, and do it now

People should get paid for the work the do--not who they are.

Equal pay is respect for hard work, and every minute we let go by without it hurts Georgia families.

We should be able to come together in a bipartisan way to make life better for millions of Americans--and grow our economy in the process.

But Congress isn't going to act on its own. That's why it's crucial for all of us to speak out about how important it is to support equal pay, and to do it now.

Urge Congress to support equal pay now, without delay: Families in Georgia and across the nation need our help today.

On Foreign Policy: Our military is but one element of our national power

We need to use all the tools at our disposal. It is imperative that we continue to play a role in preserving global order and promoting safety and prosperity when and where we can. But we don't need to shoulder this burden alone or rely exclusively on our military--we have a host of allies who share our interests and more tools at our disposal to accomplish our objectives than any other country.

I also believe that we should be judicious before employing the awesome power of America's military and sending our fighting men and women into harm's way on our behalf. Our military is but one element of our national power; we have significant resources, such as our economic strength, our global competitiveness, and our diplomatic power that allow us to secure our interests.

On Government Reform: Amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision

By instilling common-sense, good government reforms, we can stop the revolving door between Congress and lobbyists, and blunt the power of deep-pocketed special interests:
  1. Lifetime Ban On Members of Congress Becoming Lobbyists: I pledge to never become a lobbyist whether or not my proposal becomes law.
  2. No Budget, No Pay: If Congress can't do its job and pass a budget, it shouldn't get paid. And neither should the President.
  3. Get A Price Tag For Every Bill: Congress shouldn't introduce bills without knowing how much they'll cost taxpayers.
  4. End Secret, Unlimited Special Interest Spending In Elections: I would support an amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision that allows a few special interest billionaires to secretly spend millions to sway an election.
  5. Pledge To Meet With Every Senator In First Year and Bring Legislators Together: In the Senate, I will work to bring both sides together by meeting one-on-one with every Senator.

On Budget & Economy: Make smart short and mid-term investments to drive growth

Job creation and economic growth is my top priority. We must invest in our infrastructure, ensure that our educational system at every level is teaching the skills our young people need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy, and reverse the downward trends in basic research and development funding. We also have to create a simpler tax code and roll back unnecessary regulations that impede business development.

In order to afford these necessary investments, we have to make tough choices and cut spending. Federal budget deficits and rising debt inhibit our ability to make long-term investments critical to growing our economy, including in education, research, infrastructure, and workforce training. We need to be making decisions now to address the long-term growth of entitlements. We need to make smart short and mid-term investments to drive growth, and make long-term fiscal decisions that will ensure a strong economy and expanded opportunity for the next generation.

On Corporations: Lower our corporate tax rate; simplify tax code

To spur job creation, we need to have a tax code that is simple, fair and fuels economic growth. We need to lower our corporate tax rate, permanently extend the research and development tax credit and assess other provisions to ensure our tax policies promote innovation and growth.

I believe Georgia families are paying too much in taxes. Our tax code is too complicated and there are too many loopholes carved out for special interests that allow those who can afford high-priced accountants to get away without paying their fair share.

I applaud efforts to enact revenue-neutral tax reform, especially the idea of taking a "blank slate" approach to revising the tax code whereby we look long and hard at every tax expenditure and invite input from all Americans to build a code that is simple, fair and spurs economic growth.

On Education: Invest in early childhood education

High quality early childhood education is one of the smartest investments our country can make. Children who have access to quality early learning programs are more likely to graduate high school and get good jobs. Recent studies of Georgia's pre-K program have shown that these students did better academically than their peers in other states. For every $1 invested in early childhood education, Georgia's children and society as a whole could see returns of $8 or more. Policymakers at every level of government need to work together to expand pre-K programs to provide children from all backgrounds with a foundation for school success.

On Education: Common Core, teacher recruitment, smaller classes

I support the Common Core. It is a set of standards, not a curriculum, and these standards are research-based benchmarks that we can use to measure how well our students are prepared in math and English. It was created at the state level, not the federal level, and has been embraced by governors such as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush as a tool to assess our students' success from state to state and across the globe. These standards are important for Georgia because we can use them to make sure that our children are being taught what they need to achieve and be competitive in a 21st century economy compared to other states and other countries.

However, we can't just have higher expectations for our students. We must give them the support they need to succeed. That includes recruiting good teachers, keeping class sizes small, empowering strong principals, addressing issues such as chronic absenteeism and encouraging parents to become more engaged in their child's education.

On Energy & Oil: Ensure affordable and sustainable sources of energy

The US now leads the world in oil & gas production. North America could become energy secure by 2020, ensuring our independence from Middle Eastern oil. New energy technologies will further strengthen our position & deliver competitive advantages to both our energy companies and those that rely on affordable and sustainable sources of energy. Our energy policy must ensure that we maintain this competitive advantage internationally while we ensure that this growth is sustainable and environmentally sound.

On Free Trade: Seek trade agreements from Europe to China

We must continue to seek trade agreements that provide international market opportunities for American products and services and grow good-paying American jobs. From the European Union to China, we must continue to be partners as well as competitors and challenge any trade barriers that unfairly disadvantage our American farmers or businesses.

On Homeland Security: One-stop shop for veterans, like Hiring Our Heroes

We must continue to help our veterans find jobs and build careers. Initiatives like the US Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Heroes are doing great work putting veterans to work. And veterans should be allowed to use the technical and professional skills they acquired in the armed forces without being forced to navigate needless bureaucracies. The Department of Defense's Military Credentialing and Licensing Task Force has made a good start breaking down some of these credentialing barriers.

Although there are many resources available for returning veterans, what has been missing is a one-stop shop. We need one place for anyone in need to go for these housing, educational, mental health and other services provided by generous and grateful Americans. One new collaborative initiative of this kind is the Community Blueprint within Points of Light.
