Equal pay is respect for hard work, and every minute we let go by without it hurts Georgia families.
We should be able to come together in a bipartisan way to make life better for millions of Americans--and grow our economy in the process.
But Congress isn't going to act on its own. That's why it's crucial for all of us to speak out about how important it is to support equal pay, and to do it now.
Urge Congress to support equal pay now, without delay: Families in Georgia and across the nation need our help today.
I also believe that we should be judicious before employing the awesome power of America's military and sending our fighting men and women into harm's way on our behalf. Our military is but one element of our national power; we have significant resources, such as our economic strength, our global competitiveness, and our diplomatic power that allow us to secure our interests.
In order to afford these necessary investments, we have to make tough choices and cut spending. Federal budget deficits and rising debt inhibit our ability to make long-term investments critical to growing our economy, including in education, research, infrastructure, and workforce training. We need to be making decisions now to address the long-term growth of entitlements. We need to make smart short and mid-term investments to drive growth, and make long-term fiscal decisions that will ensure a strong economy and expanded opportunity for the next generation.
I believe Georgia families are paying too much in taxes. Our tax code is too complicated and there are too many loopholes carved out for special interests that allow those who can afford high-priced accountants to get away without paying their fair share.
I applaud efforts to enact revenue-neutral tax reform, especially the idea of taking a "blank slate" approach to revising the tax code whereby we look long and hard at every tax expenditure and invite input from all Americans to build a code that is simple, fair and spurs economic growth.
However, we can't just have higher expectations for our students. We must give them the support they need to succeed. That includes recruiting good teachers, keeping class sizes small, empowering strong principals, addressing issues such as chronic absenteeism and encouraging parents to become more engaged in their child's education.
Although there are many resources available for returning veterans, what has been missing is a one-stop shop. We need one place for anyone in need to go for these housing, educational, mental health and other services provided by generous and grateful Americans. One new collaborative initiative of this kind is the Community Blueprint within Points of Light.
