On Abortion: Fight for equal opportunity of all people--born and unborn

I am Pro-Life. After working for years to help provide opportunity to children, I have seen firsthand what kind of difference the next generation can make in a country.

We need to fight for the equal opportunity of all people--born and unborn--to have a fair shot & making a life for themselves. I introduced a bill in the Senate to affirm our Constitution and end all taxpayer funding going to abortionists.

I am honored to serve on the board of an innovative pro-life non-profit called Save the Storks.

On Budget & Economy: Government spending is a tax on work and a tax on jobs

Out-of-control government spending and debt are by far the greatest threats to Colorado and the US. Every dollar that our government spends is a dollar they have taken from someone who earned it by work. Government spending is a tax on work and a tax on jobs. The federal government is constitutionally limited to only spending money in a few areas. Our nation has progressed enough that we do not need the Federal government making decisions for the States--rather the states have the experience, the resources, and the voter initiative to decide for themselves what balance of taxing and spending they want.

The path forward for America is to return the spending decisions to the States and allow them to compete for the best approach to providing good government for citizens.

On Energy & Oil: Support cheap, clean-burning domestic natural gas

America's supply of energy and natural resources has been a stabilizing force at home and abroad. Today we see our dependence on Middle East oil rapidly diminishing because of cheap, clean-burning domestic natural gas. With over a century's supply of this cheap, renewable energy it is time that we update our laws to allow American businesses to export natural gas and balance our trade.

Additionally, the US Senate has no business telling Midwestern states that they can't build the Keystone pipeline. This decision should be up to the citizens of the states affected.

Finally, our energy and natural resources need to be stewarded in a way that benefits all of our citizens. Government subsidies, kickbacks, and other special interests gimmicks prevent our states from making the long-term decisions that will best utilize the resources we have available while preserving our environment and keeping energy costs low.

On Gun Control: Protect the right to own & use guns for law-abiding citizens

Guns have always been an important part of American history. Both the US and Colorado constitutions protect the right to own and use guns for law-abiding citizens. Unfortunately, criminals will always take advantage of people and violate the law. When bad people disregard the laws, the only possible response is to allow everyone the equal chance to defend themselves. My wife, your wife, our mothers and daughters and everyone we know should have the chance to defend themselves. That is why I sponsored the bill in the Senate to give every law-abiding citizen the legal protection to carry a gun for self defense without having to ask permission from a bureaucrat.

I also had the privilege of speaking against the unconstitutional and ineffective laws put in place this year that will make it harder for people to protect themselves in what appears to be an increasingly violent world.

On Health Care: Defund ObamaCare; no destructive government mandates

To turn our economy around and create more new jobs [we should] defund ObamaCare and pursue real health-care reform independent of destructive government mandates.

The greatest single hindrance to creating good jobs is ObamaCare. The more we focus on bureaucratic processes rather than giving people the tools and incentives to live healthy lives, the more of a problem we create. ObamaCare is no healthcare law--it is a big-government payout. This is a law that hires 13,000 new IRS agents and no new doctors.

We now find ourselves in the position where better, cheaper health care can be found in many places around the world, but the US is missing out on countless innovative opportunities to empower people to live the best and healthiest life possible.

On Homeland Security: Moral duty to be a force for freedom in the world

America has a moral duty to be a force for freedom in the world. Unfortunately we have squandered many opportunities for good by trying to micromanage world affairs.

Just as our federal government can't solve domestic problems with bureaucracy, we can't solve international problems with bureaucracy.

Our ability to make a difference where it counts depends on our ability to limit our international actions far more than we have in the past.

On Immigration: Enforce our borders without comprehensive reform

Republicans must always maintain free-enterprise at the core of our platform. Goods and services should move as freely as possible around the world. This system of free-enterprise has given millions the freedom to make their own life, lifted billions out of poverty, and created trillions of dollars of real value. In order to maintain the success of free-enterprise we need to enforce our borders and guard against those who will harm our way of life while also making sure that anyone who wants to come, adopt our culture, pay their own way, and add to our economy have a fair immigration process to do so.

Comprehensive reform always gets hijacked by special interests, so we need a series of changes to the law that makes it easier for enterprising and innovative foreigners to pay to attend college in the US and stay here working afterwards, allowing companies to hire good employees from anywhere that makes the best economic sense, and ensure that we crack down on human-trafficking.

On Tax Reform: Taxes should be low, simple, and without loopholes

Taxes should be low. Taxes should be simple. They should be only a minimal burden on families and businesses. Unfortunately both political parties have viewed the tax code as a way to promote their own agenda. This only empowers insiders, special interests, and politicians, while ensuring that the average taxpayer is at a disadvantage because of the loopholes, crony corporations, and subsidies.

A big reason the poorest Colorado families are disadvantaged is they pay an outsized share of taxes for food. This should never be the case and is why all food should be tax free. I ran a bill in the Colorado Senate to take the unfair taxation off of food and leave that money in the pockets of those who need it most--the taxpayer.

We need to overhaul the IRS as one of our top priorities. Everyone should be able to do their taxes on a form the size of a post-card.

On Technology: NSA should have decent respect for privacy

Privacy / NSA: A decent respect for privacy is at the very core of our identity. Since Christopher Columbus, people came from all over the world who wanted to live their own lives without the intrusion of government. During the founding of our country, a respect for privacy was clearly stated in our Constitution and laid out in our Declaration of Independence as a reason for fighting the Revolution.

Today, our bureaucrats and politicians hide behind confusing law as an excuse to violate our reasonable expectation of privacy. Rather than standing on principle, they undermine our rights and throw up their hands like they are impotent to represent the people. It is high time we have politicians who will act as a check against the unconstitutional invasions of our privacy and fight for the ongoing protections of basic rights that our parents and grandparents fought to preserve.
