On Abortion: Life should be protected from conception

I believe life begins at conception and life should be protected from conception to natural, dignified death. There should be no exceptions for protecting life. However, the judicial system of the nation has protected certain options. In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court allowed that abortion was about privacy. If that is the case, then private funds should pay for whatever abortions take place. Not a single tax dollar should go to any organization or agency that supports the killing of the unborn.

On Civil Rights: Family begins with one man and one woman

One of the four pillars of American strength is the traditional, nuclear family. That family begins with one man and one woman brought together in holy matrimony and from this union should come the children that fill out the family unit. This model works and clearly provides the strongest economic, social and psychological base for this most important building block of society.

On Corporations: End corporate welfare subsidies & crony capitalism grants

Congress needs to have the discipline to examine and then eliminate at least 50% of the grants and subsidies that comprise unnecessary and damaging market interference. There are over 2000 subsidies and 1000 grant programs that cost American taxpayers some $1.5 Trillion a year. Imagine the effects of allowing markets to work as they should. This corporate welfare, crony capitalism and unjust redistribution of tax dollars should be halted and is the primary responsibility of the Congress. As a senator, I will wage a tireless battle against these programs that reward special interests and punish the American people.

On Education: Repeal No Child Left Behind and the Common Core

The Department of Education is too deeply involved in issues that should be decided at the state & local level. The current Common Core initiative should be struck down immediately and No Child Left Behind should be repealed. These programs have taken teaching out of the hands of teaching professionals and have forced behaviors that are damaging the learning environments in which we place our children. The federal government needs to get out of the education business of state and local jurisdictions.

On Energy & Oil: Exploit every form of energy, underground and above ground

There is no reason the United States should not be energy independent in 10 years. The effects on our economy of gaining energy independence would be immediate and long-lasting. The trade balance would move from the negative side of the ledger to the positive side. Our current reliance on oil from countries that are hostile to the US would be eliminated. World geopolitics would be significantly more stable and Americans would have to worry a great deal less about having to police the world.

Energy independence includes expanding and exploiting every form of energy from that found underground to all available sources found above ground, as well. Wind, solar, nuclear and bio-fuels should be further cultivated to balance energy sources and to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

On Gun Control: 2nd Amendment is about liberty, not just gun rights

I am a member of the National Rifle Association, the Hawkeye Rifle and Pistol Club and a holder of a concealed-carry permit. Suffice it to say that I will always support and defend Second Amendment protections. However, protecting the Second Amendment is about much more than gun rights.

Liberty is the second unalienable right mentioned in our Declaration of Independence. Liberty, which is more than freedom, deals with the exercise of free will, the exercise of conscience and actions that protect the soul. The Second Amendment is the complete manifestation of all these factors as we live our lives in America. Liberty must be protected at all costs.

On Health Care: Repeal ObamaCare, the Unaffordable Care Act

The Unaffordable Care Act should be repealed. Period.

True healthcare reform should be accomplished by examining market solutions and allowing those markets to work. The Congress of the United States should advance tort reform and repeal the McCarron-Ferguson Act, thus allowing individuals in any state to shop for health insurance from any provider. By doing just these two things, estimates are that healthcare costs would be cut by up to 50%. Today, we face premium increases at near triple digit levels with no end in sight.

The current healthcare legislation is already leading to rationing, reduced care availability and will ultimately lead to fewer healthcare professionals available to treat an ever-increasing population. This is not only bad for the nation, it is immoral. This law must be repealed.

On Homeland Security: Military holds a special place in fabric of American society

Today, we Americans enjoy the protection of the greatest military force ever assembled. We continue to attract into our armed services the very best young men and women who sacrifice so much to make sure we are safe. My father was a veteran. I am a veteran and my son and daughter-in-law are veterans. The military holds a special place in my life and in the fabric of American society. I was honored to have served this nation and will, as a Senator, work tirelessly to ensure our military forces have the best equipment & training available.

Today, we face a staggering economy. Through the ill-conceived sequestration apparatus in place today, we are taking half of the required spending cuts out of the Department of Defense. There is little we can do about the sequestration structure now, but as a Senator, I would fight to make sure that our military readiness received top priority.

On Immigration: Border security at the very top of the priority list

Throughout this nation's history, the rule of law has been a fundamental American value. This legislation offers amnesty--the forgiveness of criminal behavior--for millions of individuals who entered this country illegally or who have overstayed their allotted time here. To allow someone to eventually achieve citizenship through illegal acts flies in the face of the most fundamental understanding of common and public law.

If we have learned nothing, we should take heed of the lessons of the aftermath of the passage and implementation of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. First, more than twice as many illegal immigrants came forth for amnesty than were estimated by Congress before passage.

Immigration reform is necessary and should be undertaken deliberately and intentionally. However, it should be done in phases with border security at the very top of the priority list. To do otherwise is to betray the American people.

On Tax Reform: Transition from personal income tax system to a FairTax

If elected, I would propose and advocate for a transition from the current personal income tax system to a Fair Tax. The Fair Tax is a national sales tax that taxes consumption, not production. I have examined the numbers and am satisfied that this system would provide a robust revenue stream that would incent Members of Congress to ensure that the economy stayed on sound footing. The stronger the economy, the more revenue comes into the federal coffers.

On War & Peace: Pursue active enemies with all available dispatch

At no time should we be "negotiating" with sworn enemies of this nation. We have supported the Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt, sought concessions from Israel concerning Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist group, and are now training and arming Syrian rebels who are affiliated with Al Qaeda. This seems hardly a sound foreign policy approach. It seems this administration is unable to bring itself to recognize that there are virulent, active enemies of this nation on the loose. Why are we not pursuing these enemies with all available dispatch? As your next Senator, I will work tirelessly to ensure this, or any other, administration is held to account for how it conducts activities that affect the safety of and security of the nation.
