Survey of 2014 Senate campaign websites: on Tax Reform

Joyce Dickerson: Fight for America's declining middle class

Joyce will fight for America's declining middle class. She is dedicated to helping secure the jobs of the everyday citizen, paving a way to a more positive financial outlook. Joyce is also an advocate of seniors and veterans, making sure they receive the benefits that they have earned.

Joyce understands the necessity of reducing our nation's debt for a more sustainable America.

Amanda Swafford: Politicians use tax code to for social engineering

As a former tax professional in two different states, Amanda understands the punitive nature of our current tax laws and how politicians on every level use the current tax code to meet their specific goals and the social engineering projects they deem worthy. With every new rule, regulation and tax, the power and responsibility of the individual to contribute to the local and regional economy is diminished. Every dollar taken out for income taxes on an individual is a dollar that cannot be used to buy goods and services. We must restore the power and responsibility of the individual to invest in our economy in the ways they deem best for them. How do we do this?

Nathan LaFrance: Replace income tax with national sales tax

Nathan will draft and promote legislation to:
  1. COMPLETELY REPEAL the ENTIRE current federal tax code.
  2. IMMEDIATELY implement a FLAT TAX on personal and corporate income, effective 1/1/15. Every American individual and business will pay this fixed tax rate; no more loopholes, tax shelters, etc.
  3. Implement a NATIONAL SALES TAX to replace ALL income taxes, by 1/1/18. Nathan believes that we should reward productive work in any way we can, and we can do that by not taxing it. By moving to a national sales tax, we will only pay taxes on what we consume, which means our hard work and savings will NOT BE TAXED.

Thomas Ravenel: Cut wage taxes, death taxes, & corporate taxes

Lower taxes and less government interference in the marketplace--essential components of true capitalism--improve the quality of life for every sector of American society. It is only through the free exchange of ideas and capital that our economy will truly prosper.

I support a complete overhaul of our current tax policy. Today, the government taxes Americans at every turn. We're taxed on our wages, when we make purchases with what's left of those wages, when we make gains on after-tax dollars, and even when we die.

We must also cut corporate taxes. The US has the highest corporate tax rate in the world at 40%. This places us at a severe disadvantage when competing globally. Additionally, instead of having a territorial tax system like most developed nations, the US has a world-wide tax system. This means our government taxes companies headquartered in the US if they earned income in other countries--even though those companies already paid taxes where the income was originally generated.

Randall Batson: Replace income tax with FairTax national sales tax

Taxes should only be voluntary; at point of consumption of new goods, and services only.

Repeal the 16th amendment. Replace with the FairTax; this national sales tax replaces most federal taxes. Currently, embedded taxes result in overpricing all items in the market. Once transitioned to the FairTax, prices would drop while at the same time boosting peoples' paychecks. Unlike the proposed inclusive rate of 23%, with payroll deduction choice mentioned earlier, the FairTax could be lowered to 9%.

Sam Rankin: Simplify to three tax brackets: 12%, 22%, 28%

Dave Domina: A billionaire means $10K from pocket of 100,000 families

Our billionaire class grows and our middle class shrinks. To gather up $1 billion in the pocket of 1 person takes $10,000 out of the pockets of 100,000 families. That's the math.

Our attention is distracted to other things. And it goes on-- from Administration to Administration.

Together, as a common force with a strong voice, we can make a difference! Let's get it done. A strong voice must be heard for some basic things about which there can be no intelligent dispute.

Monica Wehby: 40% of budget on debt servicing is generational theft

Our nation spends forty cents on the dollar just to pay for our debt servicing. If we don't do something to end this fiscal insanity our entire country will end up like Greece or Detroit. This is generational theft. As Oregon's U.S. Senator, Monica would enact a Balanced Budget Amendment so that we don't leave our kids with our legacy of debt. It's a moral imperative that we as Americans strive to ensure that the next generation has access to the same opportunities we had growing up.

David Clements: Make the tax code simple and regulations predictable

Government should facilitate an enhanced economic environment by making the tax code simple and regulations predictable. Hard work should be rewarded. That means no more bailouts or special favors for companies and industries with powerful D.C. lobbies.

Senator Tom Udall has spent years helping special interest groups make millions at the expense of hard working New Mexico taxpayers. This cannot continue.

T.W. Shannon: Led the way to lower income tax rates

T.W. has worked hard to shrink the size of state government and reduce the state's debt. He led the way to lower income tax rates so people could keep more of what they earn. He insisted that the state sell its underutilized assets. He authored the monumental workers compensation reform which saves businesses millions of dollars. He also authored welfare reform which adds work requirements for healthy food stamp recipients.

Chris McDaniel: Reduce our corporate and personal tax rates

I realize that businesses will locate in the areas that offer them the greatest ability to utilize their capital in the private market. Consequently, we must keep taxes low while maintaining a high level of services. To accomplish this, I will focus on reducing our corporate and personal tax rates.

Terri Lynn Land: Make tax code simple, fair, and less bureaucratic

Our nation's tax laws are too complex. It's 76,000 pages! Not to mention the 11,000 pages of new taxes [from] ObamaCare. Too often, Congress uses special tax breaks to create winners and losers. The winners are the special-interests and the losers are average Americans.

Milton Wolf: Imagine a simpler tax code, like the FairTax

What is the government's proper role in our lives?

Imagine a simpler tax code, like the FairTax, where everyone finally plays by the same set of rules.

Imagine a health care system that cares more about patients than politicians.

Our country cannot sustain the tax, spend, and borrow system that has been used by entrenched Washington insiders for far too long.

Lee Bright: Taxes punish productive citizens

Taxes are a tremendous drag on the private sector economy. Taxes punish productive citizens, while politicians use the tax code to reward special interest groups and engage in social engineering through the skillful use of tax breaks, deductions and "loopholes".

It is no wonder that our economy continues to struggle when employers and investors must carry such a heavy tax burden. In the last few years, Republicans in Congress have repeatedly succumbed for Obama's demands for just one more tax increase. This must stop.

Lee Bright is a strong advocate for a complete overhaul of the tax code. Our current tax code is out of date, confusing and burdensome to comply with.

Lee supports a fairer, flatter and simpler tax structure to boost economic growth, like the Fair Tax and the Flat Tax. Lee believes that American economy can thrive if the tax code is reformed and the overall tax burden reduced.

Ben Sasse: Taxation should be as simple as possible

Jason Conger: Pushed tax relief for middle and low income families

Jason, 45, was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2010 and is now serving his second term. While in the Legislature, Jason used the same drive that carried him out of poverty to pursue his vision for a stronger Oregon. He pushed tax relief for middle and low income families, championed greater educational opportunities for Oregon children, and helped acquire the necessary funding to move OSU-Cascades toward becoming a four-year university.

Jim Rubens: Pro-growth tax swap: simplify & reform anti-jobs tax code

To grow the economy, help working families, and create more good-paying jobs here in America, consider my pro-growth tax swap. By simplifying and reforming our anti-jobs tax code, Americans can once again compete strongly in the world economy. We must cut the taxes that stifle domestic job growth and capital investment--by permanently cutting payroll taxes and corporate taxes.

But, in a break with the past, we must pay for these tax cuts--without growing government, without printing more money, and without loading our children and grandchildren with more government debt. We can swap job-killing payroll and corporate taxes dollar for dollar with a revenue-neutral carbon tax.

I am principled, but not rigid. Conservative economists almost universally condemn America's byzantine, anti-jobs tax code, preferring a simpler system which imposes necessary taxes on consumption, rather than on work & income. This is why many conservatives support the Fair Tax, a national retail sales tax.

Pat McGeehan: Overly taxing continually steals the income of our residents

No West Virginian will say they believe they are under-taxed. Reducing the burden of taxation allows families to save for their future, and gives more money to working men and women. Lowering taxes also gives businesses the ability to invest in their companies and create more jobs. I believe it is not only bad economics to overly-tax our residents, but that it is immoral for Washington DC to continually steal the income and property of our residents.

This is why I have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to oppose any tax increase as your U.S. Senator. I have also signed the Coalition to Reduce Spending Pledge, to vote against any bill that increases the national debt.

I believe spending and taxes are two sides of a coin. I will fight to reduce taxes and cut spending. We need a balanced budget now, as we can simply not afford to pass more debt down to our children.

Sam Clovis: Transition from personal income tax system to a FairTax

If elected, I would propose and advocate for a transition from the current personal income tax system to a Fair Tax. The Fair Tax is a national sales tax that taxes consumption, not production. I have examined the numbers and am satisfied that this system would provide a robust revenue stream that would incent Members of Congress to ensure that the economy stayed on sound footing. The stronger the economy, the more revenue comes into the federal coffers.

Milton Wolf: The FairTax will save our country; scrap the tax code

Give Pat Roberts this much credit: even after he flip-flops on an issue, he can't help but let folks know how he really thinks. The latest example? Even after announcing his so-called support for the FairTax, Roberts thinks the idea of scrapping the federal tax code and replacing it with a consumption tax is a "scheme."

In a tele-town hall on July 29, Senator Roberts said about the FairTax: "Those kind of tax programs--or schemes if you want to call them that--proposals--they can raise an awful lot of money awful quick, and you know the record of the Congress back here. I'm a little worried about that because if you raise a lot of money we spend it."

Roberts' conservative primary challenger, Dr. Milton Wolf, commented: "Unlike Senator Roberts, I support the FairTax. The current tax code is the problem here, and tax overhaul proposals like the FairTax will save our country, not provide Roberts and his fellow career politicians 'an awful lot of money awful quick' so they can 'spend it.'

Joe Carr: No new taxes, period

No new taxes. Period. Our problem is not enough revenue. Our problem is overspending and a failure of leadership in Washington. The burden of the federal government's spending binge and mismanagement must not be upon hard-working American taxpayers. I will oppose any new taxes and higher taxes. A balanced budget, lower taxes (our corporate tax rate is among the highest in the world) and predictable regulatory environment will create a solid foundation for job growth and economic resurgence.

Matt Bevin: Higher taxes mean fewer private sector jobs

A lot of politicians promise to never increase our taxes, but once they get to Washington, their promises fall flat. Matt has spent many years in the private sector creating jobs, and he knows that higher taxes mean fewer private sector jobs and more money for career politicians to spend. Matt has pledged to oppose all tax increases and supports passing legislation to make it harder for Congress to raise taxes on hardworking Americans.

Our tax system also needs to be reformed--desperately. At over 60,000 pages, it is overly complex, inefficient and unfair. With its numerous pages of special-interest loopholes and thorny rules, the tax code is just a way for politicians and the IRS to reward their friends and punish their enemies. Matt supports scrapping the current tax code and instituting a flat tax that will encourage job creation and allow taxpayers to fill out their tax forms quickly and without expensive assistance.

Owen Hill: Taxes should be low, simple, and without loopholes

Taxes should be low. Taxes should be simple. They should be only a minimal burden on families and businesses. Unfortunately both political parties have viewed the tax code as a way to promote their own agenda. This only empowers insiders, special interests, and politicians, while ensuring that the average taxpayer is at a disadvantage because of the loopholes, crony corporations, and subsidies.

A big reason the poorest Colorado families are disadvantaged is they pay an outsized share of taxes for food. This should never be the case and is why all food should be tax free. I ran a bill in the Colorado Senate to take the unfair taxation off of food and leave that money in the pockets of those who need it most--the taxpayer.

We need to overhaul the IRS as one of our top priorities. Everyone should be able to do their taxes on a form the size of a post-card.

Shane Osborn: Cut taxes; reduce spending; Balanced Budget

Our nation is more than $16 trillion in debt--with trillions more in unfunded liabilities. These burdens will rob future generations of economic freedom.

Nebraskans believe in a limited government, and Shane believes government should be transparent and accountable to taxpayers. As Nebraska State Treasurer, Shane put the state budget online--creating an easy, accessible way to see how tax dollars are spent, he trimmed office staff, and cut his budget.

The jump in federal spending under President Obama has resulted in a government growing too big and too fast.

It's why Shane supports a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and it's why Shane wants to cut taxes and reduce federal spending. That formula has helped grow Nebraska's economy and it's time that message is heard in Washington.

Joni Ernst: IRS is a predatory, bureaucratic, out-of-control disaster

Scrap the Tax Code: The IRS is a disaster. The greatest nation on earth should not have one of the most predatory, bureaucratic, out of control tax agencies on the planet. Our system is backwards. Joni believes real, fundamental tax reform will require more than tweaks to the tax code. It's time to scrap it and start over, to make our tax system fairer, flatter, simpler and more certain.

David Perdue: No tax increase of any kind; overhaul the tax code

In the midst of a terrible economy, this would be the worst possible time to raise taxes on anyone. Too many families and too many businesses are struggling to get by. I will not support a tax increase of any kind. Furthermore, the federal tax code is too complicated and misaligned. It should be completely overhauled as a means to promote growth and encourage more domestic economic investment.

Champ Edmunds: Reduce taxes and cut red tape

Montanans understand that small business owners, and not federal bureaucrats, create jobs. We need to reduce taxes and cut red tape so America's businesses and entrepreneurs can get our economy rolling again.

Washington DC needs a new direction. We need to get our government under control. We live in the greatest country in the world, yet we borrow a trillion dollars a year against our own children. I want my kids to live the American dream as our parents and grandparents did.

Jim Oberweis: We cannot tax and spend our way to prosperity

In Illinois, Tax Freedom Day--the day of the year when the average Illinois family stops earning money to pay for taxes, and starts earning money for itself--fell this year on April 15. That's 105 days of working to pay your taxes. And Cost of Government Day--the day of the year on which the average Illinois family has earned enough gross income to pay its share of the spending and regulatory burdens imposed by government on the federal, state, and local levels--fell on August 15. That's more than two-thirds of the year we spend, just to pay the costs of government.

We simply cannot tax and borrow and spend our way to prosperity--the results of the last decade's experiment in liberal government have proven that.

We'll need to start a phased in tax cut, beginning with repeal of the lame duck session's tax hikes on personal income, business income, the death tax, and business losses.
