Tom Corbett: End antiquated system of state-owned liquor stores

We have to reform our antiquated system of state-owned liquor stores. Our own people don't think much of the system, either, because it's inconvenient and they don't appreciate paying monopoly prices. About the only ones who do like it are the stores in NJ, DE, and MD that pick up the extra business.

Pennsylvania loses about $80 million a year that would otherwise be spent here. So here's a thought, let's make 2014 'last call' for state-controlled liquor in Pennsylvania.

Pat Quinn: Reduce LLC fee from $500 to $39, the lowest in the nation

Three out of every four Illinois employers are small businesses. And in the last five years, we've helped them. Through our Advantage Illinois program, we've provided loans and investments to help small businesses grow.

We should do more to support our small businesses, especially as they get started. In Illinois, new businesses have long paid a $500 LLC fee when they open up shop. Let's reduce this fee to $39--the lowest in the nation--and provide a boost to our innovators. This small but important step will encourage entrepreneurs to start their business and put more people to work.

And we won't stop there. Today I'm issuing an Executive Order to establish a Small Business Advocate whose sole focus will be to examine policies and proposals through the lens of how they impact Illinois small businesses. Let's make life easier for our small businesses--and make sure small business always means big business in Illinois.

Scott Walker: Put in place manufacturing/agriculture production tax credit

Manufacturing and agriculture are two of our core industries in Wisconsin. Thankfully, both are playing a big role in our economic recovery. From Nov. 2012 to Nov. 2013, we rank 7th highest in the country in manufacturing job growth. Milk production went up at double the national rate over the past year.

To keep these positive trends going, we put in place the manufacturing and agriculture production tax credit last year. Now, if you are an employer in one of these key industries, you should look at growing in Wisconsin as this credit will eventually wipe out almost all of your taxable liability. That is a really big deal because it gives you the opportunity to invest the capital necessary to help create more jobs. This program is a game changer for employers in manufacturing and agriculture.

John Hickenlooper: Colorado Blueprint: build a business friendly environment

After we took office three years ago we launched a strategy to be a thoughtful and supportive partner with the business community. We reached out and built relationships with people in 14 regions from around the state, and based on what we heard, we designed a Colorado Blueprint that focused on six core objectives:
  1. Build a business friendly environment
  2. Increase access to capital
  3. Educate and train the workforce of tomorrow
  4. Retain, grow, recruit companies
  5. Cultivate innovation & technology
  6. Create a stronger Colorado brand.
This past year we launched the Rural Economic Development Grant Program, and are in the process of awarding $3 million to our rural communities. We launched the Advanced Industries Accelerator Program making seed capital available to start-up companies in aerospace, biosciences, energy and tech. We created a unified brand logo, which is almost universally loved. 117 of Colorado's companies are already using it.
