2014 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Local Issues

Matt Mead: Wyoming is rated in top ten states in many economic rankings

From day one, I have continued to push on how Wyoming should be pro-business, support local government, build infrastructure, have more efficient government and advance technology. Our efforts in this regard have been paying off. Wyoming is rated:My first year in office we gained and, since then, we have kept the highest credit rating, Triple A, from Standard & Poor's. We do not just look at our economic numbers--we look at how our work affects our citizens.

Dan Malloy: Connecticut is the land of steady habits, for good & for bad

Mark Twain called Connecticut "the land of steady habits," and through our long & storied history, many of those habits have driven us to accomplish great things. Our courage helped found this country & our ingenuity helped spur the industrial revolution

In recent years our habits have carried us through some difficult times, as well: through the Great Recession, through storms that battered our homes and our businesses, and even through our darkest day just over one year ago. Time and again, CT has demonstrated a resolve and a devotion that has carried us forward.

Unfortunately, there's another side to our steady habits--one that hasn't served us quite so well. Over time, certain bad habits have kept CT's government from keeping up with a changing world. Putting off hard decisions left our state with a deficit that was among the worst in the nation just three years ago. I say this not to lay blame for past problems, but because those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.

Maggie Hassan: High-end "destination" casino to counter Massachusetts

Taking action to grow our economy also requires that we acknowledge what is happening around us. Soon, our state will begin to lose $75 million per year to new casinos right across our border in Massachusetts. Developing New Hampshire's own plan for one high-end destination casino will create jobs, boost our economy, and generate revenue to invest in critical priorities.

I know that during this debate last year, some members of the House expressed concerns about the state's ability to effectively regulate a casino. Responding to these concerns, the Gaming Regulatory Oversight Authority brought in experts from across the country. For months, they worked hard to develop thoughtful recommendations for how to best oversee and move forward with one highly regulated destination casino in New Hampshire.

Instead of funding Massachusetts' needs, let's take this opportunity to invest in New Hampshire's priorities and help grow New Hampshire's economy.

Paul LePage: Entrepreneurial "doers" create jobs all over the state

Because of our efforts, good-paying jobs are being created all over the state.
