CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2015: on Principles & Values

Marco Rubio: FactCheck: Senate attendance comparable to other candidates

Marco Rubio, defending himself against accusations he's been overly absent from the Senate as he runs for president, cited previous lawmakers running for president who also missed votes while out on the campaign trail. Comparisons for the three former Democratic senators that Rubio cited:But unlike those men, Rubio has said he's finished with his Senate career, whether he wins the presidency or not. That fact has led to calls for his resignation now, including from Jeb Bush, a Florida resident. Ultimately, however, Rubio's defense that uses historic data is true.

Bernie Sanders: Abortion & gay marriage secondary to addressing inequality

Q: You went to Liberty University, a fundamentalist Christian university. One of the things you said was that the audience, you knew you had a disagreement on the question of abortion and on same-sex marriage, but you asked them to put those disagreements aside and focus on the priority, which is the inequities in the economic system.

SANDERS: Well, look, I am pro-choice. I am strongly in favor of gay marriage. And I know that, at Liberty University, people there have honest disagreements with me on that issue. But what I said, look, at a time when we have a grotesque level of income and wealth inequality, when almost all of the new income and wealth in this country is going to the top 1 percent, when we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on Earth, can we not get together and talk about creating an economy that works for all of us, and not just millionaires and billionaires?

Rand Paul: Conservative on spending; libertarian-ish on other issues

Q: You are reaching out to minority voters, and proposing legalization for 11 million immigrants: If I didn't know better--and I do know better--I would think you might be a Democrat. Do you really think you can get the Republican nomination making those statements and taking those positions?

PAUL: Well, you add that to the fact I am also one of the most conservative members of the Senate, in the sense that I vote against spending, I vote against unbalanced budgets, I'm a proponent of lower taxes. So all of those are right within the mainstream of the party. But I do have some additional things--I call them sometimes the libertarian-ish kind of issues--of believing in privacy, believing in criminal justice, that everyone should be treated fairly under the law, no matter the color of your skin. We still have a large problem in our country that, if you are black, you are not always being treated fairly under the law. And I want to fix that.
