Speech at 2015 CPAC conference: on Education

Carly Fiorina: Make sure that every parent has a choice

You know one of the things this president loves to do is to distract us so I think he is trying to distract us from the fact that we have too many failing high schools in this country by offering community college for free. If we want to educate our children let us make sure that every parent has a choice and a chance to educate their children so that they can fulfill their potential.

Jeb Bush: Federal government should create choices, not standards

While Bush hasn't taken to denouncing Common Core, he's also barely defending it. In his speech at the Club for Growth and at CPAC this month, Bush emphasized holding students and schools to high standards but to keep the federal government far away from education. The "federal government has no role in the creation of standards," Bush said at his CPAC appearance. "The role of the federal government, if any, is to create more school choice."

Donald Trump: Opposes Common Core

Donald Trump doesn't think the GOP is demanding enough. "Republicans have to toughen up," Trump said in a speech at CPAC. "Toughen up on the IRS, toughen up on Benghazi, toughen up on everything."

Trump bashed Jeb Bush on education, who Trump said was "in favor of common core."

"I thought Romney could do it," Trump, who backed the candidate during the last election, said. "I don't want what happened to Mitt Romney to happen again."

Jeb Bush: Common Core is not a federal takeover

[In a Q&A at CPAC, the host] attacked Bush's policy fissure with the conservative base, pointing to Bush's stances on immigration and education reforms as the two major areas of disagreement.

On the political ticking bomb of Common Core, Bush answered that "Common is not a federal takeover." "What we should say in the reauthorization of the K-12 law is that the federal government has no role in the curriculum," Bush said. The political rift has grown so wide between the moderate Republican and the rest of the conservative base that some CPAC members planned a "walkout" of Bush. About a few dozen protesters, many of them wearing Rand Paul shirts, left at the beginning of Bush's segment, following a "Don't Tread on Me" flag.

In a closing "lightning"-style round of questions, Bush was asked what type of conservative he considered himself to be. His answer only proved the point: "A practicing reform-minded conservative," Bush said.

Ben Carson: Private schooling better than Common Core public schooling

Carson didn't mention any of his potential rivals for the GOP nomination. But in response to a question, he condemned the Common Core national academic standards that have been championed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Carson, who claimed that home-schooled and private school students are better educated than public school students, said, "Our public schools don't need some central government telling them how to do it."

The standards were created and adopted by state officials, but the Obama administration's financial incentives to states that adopt them have drawn accusations of government overreach.
