Speech at 2015 CPAC conference: on Homeland Security

Ben Carson: Shia-led Iran is more dangerous than ISIL

On Iran, Carson says Congress must be involved in Iran deal. In his CPAC remarks this year, Carson expressed concern that the Shia-led government in Iran may be more dangerous than the Islamic State militant group. On CNN, he was critical of President Obama's negotiations with Iran, saying Congress needed a strong role in the process. He supported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress [denouncing Obama's nuclear limitation deal with Iran].

Gary Johnson: Government transparency on 9/11 secret reports

Q: There's a 28-page secret report on 9/11, which have ben semi-declassified and only available to members of Congress. It leans in the direction of Saudi Arabia funding a lot of the 9/11 attack. There's a bipartisan effort to get in touch with their members of Congress to publicize it. Should people push for more truth on 9/11?

A: Government should be transparent, and this report is just another example of non-transparency that ultimately ends up being divulged. Look, whatever's out there, get it out there immediately. Get it out there immediately and let us all deal with it.

Mike Pence: The time has come to dramatically increase defense spending

Pence said that the 2016 election could turn on foreign policy thanks to the missteps of the Obama administration, and called on conservatives to embrace "America's role as leader of the free world."

"I believe the time has come to dramatically increase defense spending to confront the unknowable and knowable threats," Pence said. "Without rebuilding our military, no strategy or innovation, no matter how brilliant, will be sufficient to protect the American people and the sovereignty of the US.

Rand Paul: National defense should be unencumbered by nation building

At CPAC, Paul defended his non-interventionist foreign policy positions. He argued that the U.S. should be less involved in foreign affairs in order to build up a stronger defense.

"When I look at government, I think the most important thing we do at the federal level is defend our country, without question," he stressed. "I envision an America with a national defense unparalleled... and unencumbered by nation building."

Sarah Palin: Let veterans apply skills to skip state certification

Palin addressed CPAC with a speech that dealt with the plight of veterans, delicately weaving in her own role as the mother of a soldier: "America hands over her sons and her daughters in service with the promise that they're going to be taken care of. Our troops are promised that a grateful nation will spare no expense to patch them up and bring them back to health when wounded," Palin said. "Well we, their mothers and their fathers and their husbands and their wives, we're here to collect on the promises made."

She noted the lack of services for veterans and said the best way to honor them is by helping them.

She floated a policy idea--using the skills veterans have learned in the military, say computer programming, and sparing them the requirement to get some kind of certification when, in fact, they already have the necessary skills. She discussed making veterans benefits permanent and less subject to the whims of Congress.

Rand Paul: Kids are concerned with privacy & the surveillance state

Sen. Rand Paul will drop by a College Republicans reception, then pose for hundreds of pictures at a "liberty reception" hosted by the Young Americans for Liberty. In an interview with POLITICO to preview his CPAC remarks, Paul offered backhanded advice to Jeb Bush: "A lot of kids are concerned with privacy, and the fact that he's come out to be a big advocate for the surveillance state and the dragnet, collecting all the phone records--if he's smart, he won't probably bring that up at CPAC."

"Younger voters in particular don't like hypocrisy," Paul continued. "Him saying recently down in Florida that he would still incarcerate people even for medical marijuana, and then it turns out--him basically acknowledging that he'd been using recreational marijuana as a kid. I don't think anybody faults him for youthful indiscretions. But if you look at the people who end up getting caught up in the war on drugs, they're often not elite kids at prep schools. They're poor kids with no school."

Sarah Palin: Dozens of veterans per day commit suicide; VA should help

Palin used her speech at CPAC to focus on veterans' issues. Palin spoke about the numerous challenges that many veterans face once they return home from war, including post-traumatic stress disorder, unemployment, divorce and suicide: "As we gather here, we're safe, we're secure, we're having fun, four days together at a conference. In those four days, 92 of our veterans will have taken their lives," she told her audience.

The former vice presidential candidate also said that veterans weren't receiving the care that they needed from the Veterans Affairs Department and alluded to the scandal over long waiting times for appointments at VA hospitals: "America hands over her sons and her daughters with the promise that they're going to be taken care of," Palin said. "We can't wait for D.C. to fix their bureaucratic blunders. This bureaucracy is killing our vets. They wait for months, they wait for years to get treatment at the VA, and they're losing hope."

Scott Walker: Build up U.S. military to take out ISIS entirely

On ISIS, Walker stated, "you've got to take them out entirely--it takes a combination of building up force in terms of the United States military, which I think has fallen to woefully low levels here, it standing up with our allies like Israel, it means working with other allies around the world, but it also means making partners even in the Arab world--Jordan, certainly Turkey, Saudi Arabia and others--Egypt, for sure, of late have seen what's happened, they want a leader in America."

Scott Walker: Ensure against radical Islamic terrorism on American soil

[As governor I got terrorism] threat assessments from the FBI. And without divulging confidential information, for years I've been concerned about that threat not just abroad but here in American soil. You've already seen some of the reported stories about what we see in the Twin Cities and some the issues there I think it is clear.

I know all of you parents [with children in military service] feel the same way: I want to know the commander in chief will do every thing in their power to ensure that the threat from radical Islamic terrorists do not wash up on American soil. We will have someone who leads. And ultimately we'll send a message not only that we will protect American soil but do not take this upon freedom loving people anywhere else in the world. We need a leader with that kind of confidence. I can take on a 100,000 protesters [in union protests in Wisconsin and] I could do the same across the world.
