PBS News Hour: on Social Security

Chris Christie: National entitlements reform package including means-testing

Christie has proposed a national entitlements reform package. His plan would include means testing for wealthy seniors so that Americans making more than $80,000 a year would get lower Social Security benefits & would pay more for Medicare health plans. Starting in 2022, the governor would gradually raise the full retirement age for Social Security to 69, from the current age of 67 for people born after 1960. He would raise Medicare eligibility more slowly, setting it at 69 years old by the year 2064.

Rick Perry: Personal accounts for younger workers

Where Rick Perry stands on key issues: The three-term governor questions the legality of the Social Security program. In "Fed Up!" Perry argues that the program is a Ponzi scheme and that the 1937 Supreme Court was wrong to rule that it is Constitutional. To reform the program, the White House hopeful has said he is open to making changes for future recipients, including raising the retirement age and reducing benefits for the wealthy. Perry has also proposed partially privatizing the system by creating personal accounts for younger workers. The states-rights advocate would also allow each state the ability to opt out of Social Security and instead implement their own state or regional program.

Rick Santorum: Consider cost-of-living cus, but not private accounts

Santorum argued that problems ahead for Social Security require immediate cuts to benefits for all and deeper cuts for wealthy Americans. In 2012, he advocated raising the eligibility age for future retirees. His campaign says Santorum now would only consider cutting cost-of-living increases for current recipients. In 2005, Santorum supported President Bush's push to privatize Social Security. His campaign recently said that Santorum no longer supports the type of private accounts Bush proposed.

Mike Huckabee: Consider raising retirement age for new workers

Huckabee advocates a balanced federal budget and frequently points to his record of balancing budgets as governor of Arkansas. On Medicare and Social Security, in April he indicated he would consider raising the retirement age for young people just entering the workforce and keep benefits and eligibility intact for those closer to retirement.
