2015 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Homeland Security

Greg Abbott: Exempt veterans from state business fees

Saying "thank you" is not enough for those who risked their lives. We must do more to help veterans return to civilian life. Texas leads the nation in job creation and yet the unemployment rate for our veterans remains high. That is unacceptable. That's why my budget exempts new businesses--formed by veterans--from having to pay state registration fees to open their businesses.

My budget also exempts new businesses formed by veterans from paying state franchise taxes for the first 5 years, and I'm calling for legislation to waive licensing exams and fees for veterans with the required education, training and practical experience gained in the military. If the training you received as an electrician, a technician or some other job meets the standard of the United States military, it should be good enough for the State of Texas.

Pat McCrory: Establish state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs

At a time when so many servicemen and women are coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq through North Carolina, we must have an efficient and well-coordinated process in place to meet the needs of active duty personnel and veterans. These services are scattered across many areas of state government with no accountability, causing delay, frustration, and poor customer service.

We are going to do more to strengthen our Veteran Affairs and the Office of my Military Advisor. I am proposing the creation of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. This department will be responsible for, protecting and fighting our military bases, promoting the health and safety of our veterans and military families, helping our veterans get jobs, and working with the unique needs of base communities.

David Ige: Proactive and aggressive support of troops in Hawaii

We need to support our military whose courage and commitment to our nation's security keeps Hawaii and the rest of the country safe and strong. From our strategic location in the Pacific comes a responsibility that we cannot shirk.

Moreover, the military plays a significant part in our economy, spending more than $6.5 billion annually with a total economic impact of $14.7 billion. It is the second largest sector of our economy supporting more than 101,000 jobs.

Even with the Pentagon's new focus on the Pacific, there is no guarantee that we can protect the military's presence in the islands simply because of our geographic location. We will need to be proactive and aggressive in our efforts to support our troops here. And I am prepared to do just that.

Bill Walker: Thank our military and law enforcement for their sacrifice

I want to thank all the men and women in the military and in law enforcement who put their lives at risk every day to protect us. On May 1st, Sergeant Patrick Scott Johnson and Trooper Gabriel Rich were killed in the line of duty in Tanana. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and those families of other law enforcement officers and servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

To our military and law enforcement families: I speak for all Alaskans and say thank you for the sacrifices you make daily for us. Your fathers, your husbands, your mothers and daughters--these are the heroes who protect our freedoms and keep us safe. These are the gallant and the brave who help us all sleep a little better at night.

Rick Snyder: 24/7/365 service to our veterans for benefits

Before we took office, we were ranked 53rd in how we helped our veterans in certain categories. Over the last four years, we've seen an over 20% increase in the average benefits veterans are getting in the state of Michigan, and we are now leading the country with services such as 1-800-MICHVETS, a cutting-edge way we can give 24-7, 365-day service to our veterans. You deserve that, and we're going to keep up supporting our veterans."

Terry McAuliffe: Foolish sequestration cost VA $9.8B in military contracts

Automatic federal budget cuts reduced military contracts in Virginia by $9.8 billion between 2011 and 2013 and they threaten to eliminate 154,000 jobs in the commonwealth, or 4% of our workforce.

Even in the face of these cuts, our close relationship with the Department of Defense and the federal government will continue, and I intend to continue fighting for every dollar we can get. I helped fight off an effort to decommission the USS George Washington, which could have cost thousands of jobs. I helped convince the State Department to choose Fort Pickett as the home of the Foreign Affairs Security Training Center, bringing as many as 500 jobs and millions in investment along with it.

Federal spending will continue to be an asset to our economy, but there is no question that this foolish sequestration policy, borne out of a dysfunctional congress, is doing real damage to our economy and to many Virginians' quality of life.

Scott Walker: Support for our military transcends partisan differences

Let's remember what unites us and makes us strong. Here in Wisconsin, support for the Packers transcends political, religious, and personal differences. Heck, I was sitting a row ahead and a few seats over from a guy on Sunday who didn't care much for my policies. I told him we were all Packer fans there, and by the end of the game, we were high-fiving another Green Bay victory. Green and gold runs deep.

Here in America, support for our military transcends those same differences. That wasn't always the case, but thankfully, we learned from our past transgressions. We support our men and women in uniform and we thank our veterans. Red, white, and blue runs even deeper.
