August Wolf in 2016 CT Senate race

On Abortion: Pro-choice but no federal funding for abortion

Dick Blumenthal holds radical positions that harm women and families. I am pro-choice. I also support the Hyde Amendment that eliminates federal funding for abortion. We must expand access to and advancement of contraceptives to end the need for abortion.

On Civil Rights: Signed Supreme Court amicus brief favoring same-sex marriage

Dick Blumenthal wrote against same-sex marriage before he was for it. Many close to me are gay and I'm firm supporter of their rights. I signed and recruited others to sign the Supreme Court amicus brief in favor of same-sex marriage. As a conservative, I believe passionately that strong families are the cornerstone of our society. We must encourage committed and legitimate relationships. As a US Senator, I won't equivocate like Blumenthal on this issue.

On Education: Support home-school, charter schools, & parochial schools

We start by getting rid of Common Core and the over reliance on standardized tests. Education should be determined at the local level, where taxpayers and parents can monitor what's happening. Second, we need policies at every level of state and local government to support the right of parents to choose the best learning environment for their children. That means supporting and affirming parents' right to home-school or send their children to charter schools, parochial schools, or any other school. The federal Department of Education takes local tax dollars from Connecticut and spends them on bureaucrats and regulations in Washington. There's just no need for that agency at the federal level. It should be turned into a think-tank to provide best practices for local education."

On Energy & Oil: Support domestic exploration for clean coal, oil, and gas

We need to support domestic exploration for clean coal, oil, and natural gas. America has enough natural resources to fuel our needs for decades--even centuries--to come. Those efforts will result in lower gasoline and electricity costs for consumers. And when we rely on our own resources, we can tell Russia and Middle Eastern antagonist countries that we don't need their oil or gas. We also must stop making decisions that would never be made in the business world--like selling our strategic reserves at the bottom of the market, when prices are lowest. The market is working well to provide other energy alternatives such as hydro, wind and solar. We need to end corporate welfare.

On Gun Control: Never disarm law abiding Americans

Our constitutional right to keep and bear arms must be defended. When the Founding Fathers wrote "shall not be infringed," they meant what they said. I own firearms and I use them for sport frequently. We ought to focus on keeping mentally ill people and criminals from getting guns, not disarming law abiding Americans.

On Health Care: Repeal ObamaCare: all of it; immediately

It all starts with this: repeal ObamaCare. All of it. Immediately. Then, we replace it with free-market, patient-centered solutions. We should allow any health insurance company to sell policies anywhere in the USA, which will increase private sector competition and drive down or cap prices. Encourage all Americans--not just a select few--to open Heath Savings Accounts so more people can take personal responsibility for their own health care. And increase penalties for greedy lawyers who sue doctors and hospitals when nothing was done wrong. Those frivolous lawsuits add billions to the cost of health care."

On Homeland Security: VA administration has been sorely mismanaged

Dick Blumenthal has failed. In addition to lying about the nature of his military service, Dick Blumenthal was the number one opponent of the VA Accountability Act. The VA administration has more than 300,000 employees and a huge budget. It's been sorely mismanaged, particularly under President Obama and Dick Blumenthal. That's shameful. I will support reforms targeted at speeding up health care services and holding administrators accountable for misspending and turning a blind eye to the men and women who wore the uniform and risked their lives. Government facilities aren't the only places where we can serve vets. Veterans should be able to chose where they want to receive their healthcare. They should also return home to an economy that will embrace them. Those will be among my top priorities in Congress.

On Immigration: Build a wall & aggressively enforce immigration laws

We must secure the border and aggressively enforce current immigration laws. That starts by building a wall along our border. When law enforcement encounters an illegal immigrant, that person should be deported within days. We cannot reward those who have cut the line. There should be a path to legalization, incorporating fines and compliance with U.S. laws. Then after proven adherence to the law, citizenship should be possible.

On Homeland Security: Demand accountability in Department of Veterans Affairs

Wolf has hit Blumenthal on his decision to support the Iran nuclear pact and his blocking of a vote on a bill that would fund the Department of Veterans Affairs. "Blumenthal pounded his desk demanding accountability in his role as a Veterans Affairs committee member, and then, when the time came to support this measure providing accountability, he voted like a typical Washington Weasel," Wolf said in a scorching press release.

Blumenthal said he opposed the GOP-crafted bill because it would have provided the Department of Veterans Affairs about $1.2 billion less than President Obama had asked for. "Unfortunately, even as our veterans too often wait too long for the health care they need and deserve, this Republican bill slashes necessary funding required to solve daunting problems, instead taking from those who already have given so much to our country and committing a serious breach of faith with those who served," Blumenthal said.

On Principles & Values: Represented America at 1984 Olympics

My name is August Wolf, and I believe that Connecticut needs a new Champion. As a young man I had the honor of representing our nation at the 1984 Olympics. After raising four children, being a leader in my business, and a contributor to my community, it's now time for me to be your new champion--an advocate who stands up for the values that originally made Connecticut and America great.

On Tax Reform: Tax reform to allow private industry to create jobs

Decades of value-destroying policies have crushed Connecticut. By any reasonable measure--job growth, debt levels, taxes, and regulatory burden--we now rank near the bottom. And now we have a career politician pushing these same tax and spend policies in D.C.

I want to do something about that. Economic liberty, limited government, and personal choice to live the lives we want-- these are the forgotten foundations of our great country. As Connecticut's next United States Senator, I will work non-stop to reassert these values on your behalf. I will work for fiscal discipline and effective foreign policy, and lead the fight for equitable and sustainable programs that allow private industry to create jobs. I will work for rational and effective regulatory and tax reform, and improvement of our educational, retirement, healthcare and social systems.

On War & Peace: We can't trust the Iranian terrorist regime with nukes

August Wolf is airing his first commercial: a cable television ad urging US Sen. Richard Blumenthal to oppose the proposed US-Iran nuclear deal. Rather than introduce himself, Wolf opted in the first ad of the 2016 season to focus attention on whether Blumenthal will support a deal that would lift sanctions on Iran in return for controls on its ability to develop nuclear weapons. "We can't trust the Iranian terrorist regime with nuclear weapons," Wolf says in the ad.

His spokesman said the campaign has purchased between $15,000 and $20,000 in ads on cable television in the New Haven and Hartford markets in an effort to start a public conversation. "We'll see how it delivers," the spokesman said.

Blumenthal recently quizzed Pentagon officials about the proposed deal, but he is undecided, unlike his Democratic ally from New York, US Sen. Chuck Schumer, who has announced his opposition.

On Corporations: Not everyone who works on Wall Street is a criminal

Wolf declared, "If you believe that government regulation and bureaucratic interference leads to good outcomes, I would challenge you to show me so. You're just becoming a clerk because of the compliance requirements," he explained. "No one is provided to take any risk in the financial world, because of all of the regulation. [Massachusetts U.S. Sen.] Elizabeth Warren has told everyone that everyone that works on Wall Street is a criminal. I don't agree with that."

He said the Federal Reserve Board's policies of zero interest rates at a time when relatively few people can get loans, has widened the gulf between the upper class and the middle classes, since fewer people can make investments to garner better yields on their money. "You're creating more distortion in our economy," he said.

On Free Trade: Ratify fast-track trade authority and TPP

Wolf endorses lowering individual and corporate taxes and ratifying the fast-track trade negotiating authority which reportedly is needed to pass the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) between the United States, Japan and 10 other countries, which collectively represent 40% of the global economy.

Obama has had far more support from Republicans than Democrats on fast track and TPP. The president has said that if America doesn't establish trade standards in the Pacific Rim then China, which has the world's second largest economy, will do so. "I believe that comparative advantage in trade is real," Wolf said, who supports the TPP.

On Jobs: Minimum wage of $15 per hour is too high; find middle ground

Connecticut's minimum wage is $9.15 an hour, compared to the federal standard of $7.25 per hour. The state was the first to approve boosting it to $10.10, which is scheduled for 2017. Seattle has a $15 minimum wage. "I don't think that's the right solution," Wolf said of Seattle's standard, noting "that business owners say that when they're forced to increase prices, consumers complain."

"I think there is a middle ground somewhere," he added. "I don't know where that is."

On Principles & Values: Participated in 1984 Olympics, as shot-put athlete

Wolf's path to the Olympics began when he switched from baseball to track & field at the St. Paul Academy in Minnesota at the urging of his athletic director, who thought he had a future in the shot put and discus. He had immediate success, which provided him not only with the ability to qualify for the state meet but was the basis for him making it to the Olympics. "Performance is all about having the right support and inspiration, and practicing the right movements over and over," Wolf said. "The secret to success is boring: excellence is mundane. We need to do this better in our society--too much focus on instant gratification and superficial success metrics." That's difficult since the human mind is not conditioned to do activities for long periods of time.

At Los Angeles, Wolf, who was probably the biggest US Olympian, marched during the opening ceremonies next to the smallest, the talkative Mary Lou Retton, the Gold Medal gymnast who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
