Jay Williams Iowa in 2016 IA Senate race

On Education: My youngest son and I got our GED's on the same day

My name is Jay Williams, and I am applying for the position of US Senator from the State of Iowa. I am 57 years old with a long resume and a longer marriage of 38 years to my wife Sharon. She works as a bank teller for JP Morgan Chase.

I dropped out of high school, went right to work and did not attend college--my youngest son and I got our GED's on the same day. Having managed several small businesses, I currently work as a cab driver and property manager.

On Government Reform: Campaigning without financing, to fight toxic system

I'm running for US Senate in Iowa in 2016 without accepting any money--yours, mine, or anyone else's. My campaign will receive no monetary donations and will be entirely self-organizing. There will be no paid staff to tell me what to think, say or do. There will be no paid advertising. Instead, using our own tools and technology, we, as volunteers, will do everything that needs to be done, or it won't be done. Then, when I'm elected without the burdens, temptations and pandering required to raise money, I'll be free to serve full time.

Money buys exclusive access and special favors while secrecy permits and perpetuates it. It's as simple and toxic as that.

I'm offering an alternate process to reassert our civic responsibilities and realize the Constitutional intent of self-government. We must stop wasting time and effort trying to fix what cannot be fixed. We must stop doing what isn't working. We must act.

On Government Reform: Fight nominating process of secretly pre-selected candidates

We must begin with the nominating process. The very reason for our democracy was to recognize the right of every voter to be heard, but we are being silenced before elections are even held. Presently, political parties, powerful special interests and big donors choose the candidates in relative secrecy, effectively creating political indebtedness and preempting our choices at election time. Have you ever voted for the "lesser of two evils," or not bothered to vote at all, because the choice of candidates was so poor? When was the last time you honestly felt that your one vote really mattered or that you were really being heard? Whether you are a diligent voter or a frustrated abstainer, remember that our founders meant for everyone, not just the privileged few to be heard and to exercise the power allowed by our citizen-directed democracy. This campaign is your chance to realize that vision by choosing to run a candidate that is not already pre-selected by concentrated interests and money.

On Principles & Values: Truth, Life and Love--my values & American values

The values that I honor and believe are most important are Truth, Life and Love--God if you wish--but I know some people struggle with religious or spiritual language, so I'll try to be more generic.

I honor Truth (with a capital "T") because, It just is--regardless of what we may think, say or do about it--it is. That's what makes it Truth.

I honor Life by living it fully and joyfully; by trying to share and preserve it in ways that allow good will and ease pain and suffering.

I honor Love by trying to follow what all great wisdom traditions teach: that we must at all times love Truth, ourselves and each other with everything we have.

I believe these values--my values--are both American and spiritual values that, in the public's best interest, should be placed above the love of money, special interests, intentional ignorance, willful denial, and guile for personal gain--and sooner rather than later.

On Principles & Values: Ordained ULC minister and United Methodist Lay Servant

I serve as an ordained ULC minister with a very rewarding weddings and studies ministry. I am also an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA, and a certified Lay Servant in the United Methodist Church. My wife and I are on the Living Faith! worship team at St John's UMC's Living Faith service in Davenport; she sings, and I play lead guitar--and sing, too--when they let me.
