On Foreign Policy: Vet refugees to keep out terrorists, but other Muslims ok

Sen Michael Crapo (R) said he disagrees with banning people from the country based either on their religion or on their country of origin, both of which have been proposed at times by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. However, he stressed, there is legitimate concern about whether terrorists are able to make it into the U.S. through refugee resettlement, and the federal government needs to address it. "The solution is to resolve the vetting issue," Crapo said.

Sturgill said he has worked with refugees who contribute to society and the economy and said he supports the inclusive views toward immigrants and refugees espoused by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which both Sturgill and Crapo are members. Sturgill said he would oppose closing our borders based on fear. "It's inconsistent with my belief, it's inconsistent with the church's position, and we should continue to be that kind of beacon to the world that we've been historically," he said.

On Principles & Values: Attending Town Hall meetings in all 200 Idaho cities

Since October, Sen. Mike Crapo has spent much of the time when he isn't in Washington touring the Gem State's farthest-flung nooks and crannies, where he has met with small crowds in small rooms to discuss big issues. And, with a re-election bid coming next year, he's casting himself as a fighter ready to do what it takes to roll back policies that have infuriated conservatives throughout the years of the Obama administration.

The idea for the tour popped into CrapO`s head last year in a staff meeting: a town hall meeting in every incorporated city in the state. That 200-long list includes some very small places, such as the city of Clayton, population 7. Crapo was there Thursday.

Crapo comes to each meeting armed with charts tracking the projected growth of debt, deficits and interest payments, as well as how many pages of new federal regulations are being contemplated. "I think it's perhaps the biggest threat our nation faces today," Crapo said of the $19 trillion debt.

On Drugs: 2012: Pleaded guilty after DUI arrest, and apologized

Mike Crapo announced that he'll run for re-election in 2016, seeking a fourth six-year term. There had been some speculation that Crapo might not run again after his DUI arrest in December 2012, to which he pleaded guilty and apologized. Crapo had long been known as a teetotaler because of his strict Mormon faith. The arrest shocked his supporters.

After the arrest, he told police he had consumed several shots of vodka before going for a drive. He was arrested after making a U-turn at a red light. He registered a 0.11 blood-alcohol level at the scene. He was sentenced to a $250 fine, a suspended 180-day jail sentence, an alcohol awareness program and a one-year license suspension.

After his guilty plea, Crapo told reporters he had started drinking at home during the previous year in a misguided attempt to relieve stress, and regretted bringing shame to himself and his faith. "I'm swearing off alcohol and I am not going to continue to drink," he said then.

On Environment: Conservation and progress do not need to be at odds

We in Idaho are proud of our natural resources and land. I continue to support legislation that protects our environment for future generations, while respecting the rights of property owners and balancing the needs of the community. Conservation and progress do not need to be at odds. President Roosevelt had it exactly right--we must be careful with what we do with our environment as it will last far beyond our lifespans and become part of what we leave for our children and future generations.

Through a common sense approach of collaboration and cooperation, we can achieve workable solutions to some of the most challenging issues involving our land, environment and natural resources. [Source: crapo.senate.gov/issues ]

On Environment: Improve ESA with innovative collaborative species management

For years now, landowners, environmentalists and agencies responsible for implementation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) have been working to improve the Act [but] the stalemate goes on. In the meantime, the survival of one species after another, and one farm after another is called into question.

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas) and I introduced the bipartisan Collaboration for the Recovery of the Endangered Species Act (CRESA) in December. CRESA codifies the innovative collaborative species management occurring nationwide, giving these success stories the foundation of law. Current regulatory climate limits creativity and discourages landowners. Landowners must have a meaningful role in determining how to conserve threatened and endangered species. An effective way to encourage landowner participation is to offer reasonable conservation methods that bring tangible benefits to species and the communities involved. [Source: Candidate Website]
