Jill Stein in First 2016 Presidential Debate

On Energy & Oil: Nuclear power plants risk proliferation and going Fukushima

HILLARY CLINTON: Donald Trump's cavalier attitude about nuclear weapons is so deeply troubling. That is the number one threat we face in the world. And it becomes particularly threatening if terrorists ever get their hands on any nuclear material.

DR. JILL STEIN: Yes, nuclear material in the hands of terrorists is a very dangerous thing. This is yet another reason why nuclear power and nuclear power plants and their proliferation around the world is an intolerable threat, not only because of the nuclear weapons that can be made from their materials once they have been used, but also because of the inherent dangers of nuclear power, particularly in the era of climate change. In our country, we have something like 16 nuclear power plants which are located at sea level. Right now, we could see as much as nine feet of sea level rise as soon as 2050, which means that our 16 or so nuclear power plants are all going Fukushima.

On Free Trade: We want antidotes to NAFTA

Donald Trump: President Clinton approved NAFTA, which is the single worst trade deal ever approved in this country.

Jill Stein: Everything that Donald Trump markets is an off-shored manufactured item. So Donald Trump knows all about it. In fact, he advised that people close their factories and move somewhere and then impose low wages on the workers. We are calling for the antidote to NAFTA. The Green New Deal, investing in people, 20 million living wage jobs that will transition us to 100 percent clean energy.

Hillary Clinton: Well, I think that trade is an important issue, of course. We are five percent of the world's population--we have to trade with the other ninety five percent. And we need to have smart fair trade deals.

On Government Reform: No money from lobbyists; No money from SuperPACs

I am the only candidate in this race who is not taking money from lobbyists, from corporations--I do not have a super PAC to coordinate with or not. I'm the one candidate that actually has the freedom to stand up for what the American people are clamoring for. That means an emergency jobs program, which will solve the emergency of climate change. It means bailing out the students, like they bailed out the crooks on Wall Street who crashed the economy. It's time to bail out the victims.

On Tax Reform: Rich should pay 55%-60% taxes, not 15% or 35%

Donald Trump: Under my plan I will be reducing taxes tremendously from 35 percent to 15 percent for companies, small and big businesses. That's going to be a job creator like we haven't seen since Ronald Reagan.

Jill Stein: America wasn't meant to be an aristocracy. 22 billionaires have as much money as 50 percent of the US population. We need a progressive income tax, with the rich paying at least at the 55 to 60 percent level.

Hillary Clinton: What I have proposed would be paid for by raising taxes on the wealthy because they have made all the gains in the economy. And I think it's time that the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share to support this country.

On War & Peace: Libyan invasion was a catastrophe that inflamed the Mideast

HILLARY CLINTON: Words matter when you are president. And I want to reassure our allies in Japan and South Korea and elsewhere that we have mutual defense treaties, and we will honor them. Our word is good. People around the word follow our presidential campaigns so closely, trying to get hints about what we will do. Can they rely on us? Are we going to lead the world with strength and in accordance with our values? That's what I intend to do.

DR. JILL STEIN: Let's be mindful here of Secretary Clinton's track record. Was the invasion of Libya an example of how we lead with strength consistent with our values? It would be hard to imagine a more catastrophic war than what took place in Libya, that helped strengthen ISIS, that helped release an incredible stockpile of weapons, further inflaming the crisis and the violence in the Middle East. Clinton has said she would like to impose a no-fly zone over Syria, which basically means we are going to war with Russia, [who fly in that airspace].

On War & Peace: Nuclear disarmament with Russia, not threats over Syria

Hillary Clinton has said she would like to impose a no-fly zone over Syria, which basically means we are going to war with Russia, because imposing a no-fly zone [means] you shoot down people that are in that airspace. And remember, we have 2,000 nuclear weapons now, between us and the Russians, on hair-trigger alert. So, this is certainly a very dangerous territory, where Hillary Clinton has continued to beat the drums of war, leading us in a very dangerous direction.

Instead of spending a trillion dollars creating a new generation of nuclear weapons and modes of delivery, it's time to instead change direction here and move as quickly as humanly possible towards nuclear disarmament. And instead of blaming the Russians, we need to acknowledge it was actually the Russians who tried to engage us in a nuclear disarmament process, again, several decades ago. We need to revive that proposal, take them up on it and move to nuclear disarmament as quickly as we possibly can.

On Immigration: End fear-mongering; immigrants are law-abiding

Trump said during the debate, "I was endorsed by ICE. They've never endorsed anybody before -- on immigration. I was just endorsed by ICE. We're losing our jobs, people are pouring into our country. The other day we were deporting eight hundred people, but these people that we were going to deport, for good reason, ended up becoming citizens. And it was 800 and now it turns out it might be 1800 and they don't even know."

Jill Stein responded, "Immigrants are among the most law-abiding groups out there. It is false for Trump to be fear-mongering that immigrants are a community of violence."

Gary Johnson proposed a reformed immigration system that would "eliminate categories and quotas" and offer undocumented immigrants with an otherwise unblemished track record in the U.S. a path to legal status. Johnson wrote that border enforcement would be focused on "keeping out real criminals and would-be terrorists."
