2016 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Corporations

Phil Bryant: Tax cuts for people before corporations

How do we generate sufficient revenue to maintain and keep safe the roads and bridges that are our economic life line and not place an undue burden upon the working people of this state? There is no reason we cannot balance an increase in fuel tax with an equal and sufficient tax reduction. This tax cut does not need to apply to large corporations. They are and have been receiving the reduction in fuel cost for some time now. It is the working families of Mississippi I am concerned about.

Bill Walker: Increase certain business licensing fees to raise money

The fisheries, mining license and cruise ship head tax measures ensure that all sectors of our economy contribute to the solution. The fisheries bill proposes an increase of 1 percent to various fisheries levies. The mining license tax proposes an increase of 2 percent. The first $100,000 of a company's income is exempt from the increase. The cruise ship head tax legislation eliminates an existing port fees credit deduction.

Jack Markell: Reduce regulatory burdens on business

Our employers and entrepreneurs expect Delaware to be an affordable, welcoming place to do business. That's why we have taken major steps to ease regulatory burdens. We've invested in broadband deployment in southern Delaware and increased access to capital for hundreds of start-ups and small companies--but we can do more.

Jack Markell: Ease restrictions on crowdfunding

Congress has given states the flexibility to permit citizens to more easily invest in startups. Much of this investing can be done through what is known as crowdfunding--a way for entrepreneurs to connect with investors. Through crowdfunding, companies raise billions--this year the amount of investment is expected to exceed the funding provided through traditional sources like venture capital. But our laws prevent our citizens from using crowdfunding to its full potential to help Delaware businesses.

Andrew Cuomo: Cut taxes for small businesses to stimulate growth

To stimulate economic growth I propose a tax cut for small businesses because that is the engine that is driving the economy. 97% of all businesses in New York employ fewer than 100 people--that's 3.4 million employees working in small businesses. I propose a $300 million tax cut that will reduce the rate from 6.5% to 4%, plus a 15% income exemption for partnerships and S-corporations. That's a tax reduction for one million small companies and another clear signal that New York is open for business.

Andrew Cuomo: Current low minimum wage amounts to corporate welfare

Some argue that raising the minimum wage is government interference in the private sector. That argument is the height of hypocrisy. Companies that pay the minimum wage--like a McDonald's--have full time workers who are still below the poverty level and qualify for welfare and food stamps. That costs taxpayers, on average, $6,800 per worker. So McDonald's is paying $18,000 and we are paying $6,800 to subsidize that worker. It is corporate welfare at its worst.

Earl Ray Tomblin: Saved businesses $548M on taxes and workers' comp

We overhauled workers' compensation and companies operating here have saved more than $323 million since the program was privatized in 2006. We've enacted gradual reductions in our business and consumer taxes, and since I took office, we've saved employers and West Virginians more than $225 million. We rank higher than each of our neighboring states in this year's Business Tax Climate Index.

Rick Scott: Do away with commercial lease tax

We know that the commercial lease tax unfairly targets small and large businesses across our state. And, under the first for jobs tax cut package, we will begin the fight to do away with this unfair tax!
