2016 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Energy & Oil

Bill Walker: Expand exportation of LNG to Asian markets

The reception we received in Japan in September from the Asian marketplace following my presentation at the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference was extremely encouraging. The market has not forgotten the relationship Alaska forged with Japan to export LNG. The Asian market stands ready to work with Alaska to ensure the pipeline is built and the LNG project at Nikiski is successful.

Bill Walker: Invest in renewables to diversify economy

We have traditionally been an energy state. As we diversify our economy, we have an opportunity to be a leader in renewable energy, emerging energy technologies and energy efficiency. With our abundant wind, geothermal, tidal and even solar resources, we are uniquely suited to test, develop and deploy these technologies. On a practical level, reducing diesel use in our remote communities lowers costs for families, government and local businesses; and increases energy security.

Charlie Baker: Develop hydropower--most cost effective renewable

Meeting our future energy needs requires cooperation with the other New England states because the region's energy infrastructure and supply is closely linked. We have a growing solar industry, which we should continue to support, but not at prices two to three times more than every other option. Cost competitive wind options are already available to us, and we should embrace them too. But if we're serious about reducing our carbon footprint while maintaining a reliable energy grid and improving our competitive position, then we must significantly increase the supply of hydropower.

John Hickenlooper: Pursuing renewables; solar and wind

Upholding the highest public health and environmental standards, while promoting innovative energy development, is a cornerstone of our energy strategy. That means moving toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future and Colorado has already risen to this challenge. We're a leader in the pursuit and promise of renewable energy. Sunrun is bringing 800 new solar jobs to our state. And Vestas Wind Systems added 350 new jobs at their Windsor, Brighton and Pueblo facilities.

Andrew Cuomo: Increase commitment to green energy: 50% by 2030

One of the most effective programs to make our state cleaner and greener is the Environmental Protection Fund. I propose raising the Environmental Protection Fund to the highest level in history--$300 million. We previously set a goal that 50 percent of New York's energy must come from renewables by 2030. This year it's no longer a goal--it is now a requirement. Further, we will eliminate all use of coal in New York State by 2020.

Terry McAuliffe: Renewables an economic development opportunity

We will make Virginia more energy independent and stimulate economic growth by expanding our use of renewable energy. Recently, we met with the leaders from Microsoft, Google and Amazon, and they made it clear that they will only do business and create jobs in states that can provide renewable energy to power their operations. Renewables also offer an opportunity for our manufacturing sector, so that every single solar panel or wind turbine we install has "Made in Virginia" stamped right on it.

Butch Otter: Clean energy leadership helps economic development

Preserving Idaho's water is crucial to our continued economic growth and prosperity. Our renewable and "green" hydroelectric resources make Idaho magnet for businesses that put a premium on environmental sustainability. Starting in November, the new Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear will provide a one-stop-shop for private developers to find federal experts and facilities to help them create safer, cleaner and more efficient reactors to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses.
