2016 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Homeland Security

Robert Bentley: Veteran-owned business stickers in small business windows

With over 420,000 Veterans in Alabama we want to make sure we give them every opportunity to succeed. Our Veterans have given so much, yet they ask for so little. Working with the Alabama Small Business Commission and the Alabama Veterans Network, we have developed a way for customers to identify a Veteran-owned business. Simple stickers displayed in Veteran-owned businesses statewide are aimed at helping us know that small business is owned by someone who sacrificed for our country.

Andrew Cuomo: Counterterrorism unit to be moved to NY state police

Last year I asked former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly to do a security audit and tell us the best way to defend ourselves and the state's counterterrorism operations. Commissioner Ray Kelly recommends moving the state's counterterrorism operations to the New York State Police to improve intelligence sharing and reduce response time. I believe that recommendation makes sense. I'm going to recommend it in this budget.

Andrew Cuomo: State Police need more gear

Terrorist attacks no longer mean just airplanes and buildings. More and more, attacks include heavily armed individuals, active shooters in shopping malls. To ensure that our State Police have the right equipment to respond to these situations I propose $4 million to provide every on-duty uniformed State Trooper with better weapons, body armor and tactical helmets.

Sam Brownback: Arm additional security at National Guard facilities

Last summer, in response to the attack on recruiting facilities in Tennessee, I ordered Adjutant General Tafanelli to complete a comprehensive security assessment of all Kansas National Guard facilities. Included in his report was a plan to arm and train additional personnel and make security enhancements to our National Guard facilities. My budget proposal includes funding to support these activities.

Sam Brownback: Halted Syrian refugees from being resettled in Kansas

In November, in response to the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris I directed all state agencies to immediately cease the placement of refugees from countries where potential terrorists can arise, due to our inability to verify their background. Governors, both Republican and Democrat, continue to question the federal government's ability to properly screen people claiming to be refugees.
