Gary Herbert: Governing through executive order is undemocratic

My administration conducted an exhaustive regulation review process that has modified and eliminated 368 regulations. In addition, I have just completed a review of every executive order issued by a Utah governor since statehood. Tonight, I am pleased to announce that I will repeal 52 of these executive orders that are no longer necessary. In Washington DC, we have a president who thinks it's okay to bypass Congress and create laws by executive order. Well, that's not the way we do it in Utah.

Jack Markell: Religious tolerance is cornerstone of US value system

The recognition of the discriminatory sins of prior generations presents an opportunity to reflect on whether we have learned history's lessons--whether we are living up to our core values of opportunity & equality for all people. The suggestion by some that one's eligibility to enter this country should be subject to a religious test represents a dangerous path. Because while racial and religious tolerance may not always have been our history, that is the future in which we want our children to live.

Nikki Haley: Local government needs to be more accountable

My two main priorities in terms of government reform haven't changed: Requiring public officials to disclose who pays them and having independent investigators oversee legislators, just like they do for every other elected official in the state. The House has passed both. Repeatedly. South Carolina thanks you for that. The Senate has refused to even vote on either. Repeatedly. It should not be this hard.

John Hickenlooper: Governance needs compromise to work

Democracy wasn't designed to be argument-free--it's built on vigorous debate. But democracy also wasn't designed to be combative to its own detriment. Without compromise, the system stagnates under the weight of so many stalemates. This "you're either with us or against us" mentality hurts our state and our country, and it undermines our democracy. This isn't how our founders envisioned it. They weren't partisan to the point of paralysis. The system worked because they worked together.
