2016 Vice Presidential prospects: on Gun Control

Dianne Feinstein: Denying guns to no-fly list is a national security issue

Q: The NRA is wary of new legislation denying gun purchases to anybody who's on the terror watch list or no-fly list.

FEINSTEIN: We have worked with the Justice Department in drafting this legislation. I do not believe the NRA is correct on this. This is really a national security issue. It isn't a gun control issue. And let me explain why. ISIL is actively pursuing operations to commit attacks and bring people in to western countries, whether it's through immigration, whether it's over the border, or in any other way. The fact of the matter is that it's well-known that a terrorist can come into this country, they're not on the NICS list, which is the database of where you can deny a gun. They're not there and can, therefore, buy a gun legally in this country. What this legislation does is, if there is reasonable suspicion that the person, when they do the background check, is a potential terrorist, the gun sale can be denied. It also has an appeal process.

Amy Klobuchar: Sensible reforms like enhanced background checks

Sen. Jeff SESSIONS [R, AL]: If the Heller court were to be reversed, that would mean that any city, county or state could completely ban the use of firearms. The Heller decision was 5-4 in the Supreme Court. Now that Scalia has passed away, the next president will appoint the 5th vote. If Hillary Clinton is elected president, she will appoint a judge who will declare it not to be a personal right.

KLOBUCHAR: I believe in the Second Amendment and I believe Hillary Clinton does as well. But what she's been talking about here is simply something that the vast majority of the American people believe in, and that is some background checks--which the Supreme Court has left open in its gun decision--that you could have more enhanced background checks. The idea that you shouldn't have stalkers be able to go out and get a gun, I think would [provide] vast hope in saving lives, including the fact that people on the terror watch list can still get guns. Those are some sensible reforms.

Eric Garcetti: Mass shootings are price of easy access to fearsome weaponry

Our hearts go out to the victims and survivors in Orlando, an attack not just on our LGBT brothers and sisters, but on all of us.

Once again, a shocking act of violence forces us to reflect on the price of allowing easy access to fearsome weaponry. We must distinguish between the freedom to bear arms and the irresponsible policies that open the way, again and again, for our enemies to turn their hatred into explosions of deadly mass violence.

LAPD is coordinating with local and federal partners, and will be increasing patrols, as well as visible and plainclothes presence at critical locations. We are in communication with our partners at the LA Sheriff's Department and across law enforcement and will provide all support needed to ensure the safety and security of everyone attending today's events. And, as always everyone should remember, 'If You See Something, Say Something.'

Jeff Sessions: Overturning Heller means cities could and would ban guns

Q: After a mass shooting, the discussion quickly goes to guns.

SESSIONS: The Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. If the Heller court were to be reversed what that would mean is that any city, county or state could completely ban the use of firearms in America. It would be the greatest evisceration of the protections of the Second Amendment since the founding of the republic. It was 5-4 in the Supreme Court. Now that Scalia has passed away, the next president will appoint the 5th vote. If Hillary Clinton is elected president, she will appoint a judge who will declare it not to be a personal right, but would say that it could be constricted by local governments. Imagine the cities in America that, if they had the power, would immediately ban firearms. Washington DC had to have a federal court overrule their ban of all firearms in Washington. Heller is the only thing that protects us, it was 5-4 and it could flip 5-4 the other way if Clinton appoints the next justice.

Tom Vilsack: Rural America ready to discuss gun control

Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation. Vilsack says the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans. But Vilsack said it's now "potentially a unifying conversation. President Obama recognizes that changes to gun laws can't just be decreed from Washington but must come from the "grassroots up."

Tom Vilsack: Start conversation with a respect for the 2nd Amendment

Here's how I view this. I view this conversation starting with a respect for the 2nd Amendment and a recognition that there is a value system attached to it that is important, and it starts with the recognition that people do hunt and that that's important to them--38% of America either hunts or fishes. So you know, it's a big part of the population. It's a much deeper conversation.

And it's a good one to have for this country. It's potentially a unifying conversation. The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation and Lord knows we need to be unified.
