On Budget & Economy: 6 years of steady job growth, but not nearly enough

Perez fiercely defends President Obama's economic record. The U.S. just marked 6 years--72 months--of consecutive private sector job growth. On Energy & Oil: Promote SolarCity manufacturing solar panels

Perez appeared proud of his Western New York roots, and he says he's rooting for the Western New York economy. He described how he has a Ph.D. in "Buffalonomics."

"I'm bullish on Buffalo," he said, noting the progress at the medical campus, the waterfront and at the Riverbend site, where SolarCity will eventually manufacture solar panels.

"What Buffalo taught me is the experience of real people with a great heart and an incredible drive, many of whom got kicked to the curb through no fault of their own, and the resilience of the Buffalo spirit, the City of Good Neighbors, coming together," Perez said.

On Immigration: Solution is to break down barriers, not to build walls

When asked about the immigration debate within the Republican primary race, in which Donald Trump has called for a wall with Mexico and the deportation of millions of undocumented people, Perez criticized the political opposition.

"We desperately need comprehensive immigration reform," said Perez, the son of Dominican immigrants. "The solution is not to build walls. The solution is to break down barriers."
