Bernie Sanders in CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2017

On Abortion: Support pro-life Dems if they replace pro-life Republicans

Q: There's a bit of a debate about the Omaha candidate for mayor; he is against abortion rights. How does the party sort all that out?

SANDERS: I don't think there's much of a debate about that. I have a 100% lifetime pro-choice voting record. Overwhelming majority of Democrats are pro-choice. I'm going to do everything that I can to see that the Republicans do not get away with their horrific effort to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides health care to 2.5 million women. But if we're going to become a 50-state party, if you're going to go to Omaha, Nebraska, which has a Republican governor, two Republican senators, all Republican congresspeople, Republican legislature, should I reject going there to Omaha? I don't think so. I hope very much he wins. And, by the way, his opponent, the incumbent mayor, is also anti-choice [AND] anti-labor and anti-education. The choice is clear. And I hope very much the Democratic candidate there wins.

On Principles & Values: Change direction of Democrats to grassroots & bottom-up

Q: You're out on a unity tour you're on with the DNC Chairman. What is the discussion in the Democratic Party about its direction?

SANDERS: What is clear to anyone who looks at where the Democratic Party today is, that the model of the Democratic Party is failing. We have a Republican president who was the most unpopular candidate in modern history. Republicans control the House, the Senate, 2/3 of governor's chairs. And in the last eight years, they have picked up 900 legislative seats. Clearly, the Democratic Party has got to change. And, in my view, what it has got to become is a grassroots party, a party which makes decisions from the bottom on up, a party which is more dependent on small donations than large donations, a party that speaks to the pain of the working class in this country. And when we do that, you're going to see voter turnout swell. You're going to see people coming in and running for office. You're going to see Democrats regain control of Congress.

On Civil Rights: Women's March: never again second-class citizens

Q: The president responded to the protesters who were marching yesterday against him [in nationwide "Women's March" rallies] and said basically "the election is over, why didn't you vote in the election?" It doesn't sound like he is listening to those voices.

SANDERS: Well, I have the feeling the vast majority of the people who protested did vote. Mr. Trump lost the popular vote by almost three million votes. But I think the point yesterday, at rallies all over this country, all over the world, what people were saying to Mr. Trump, women are not going backward. They are not going to become second-class citizens. Listen to the needs of women. Listen to the needs of the immigrant community. Listen to the needs of workers. Listen to what is going on with regard to climate change. Modify your positions. Let's work together to try to save this planet and protect the middle class.

On Technology: 13 million jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure

Q: On infrastructure, next week, they are going to spend a couple of days [on it in a GOP meeting]. Can you do anything to reach out and why not grab the moment?

SANDERS: You are absolutely right. I would hope very much that President Trump will work with us. If he wants to come on board and work with us, that would be great. In terms of infrastructure, clearly, he is right when he says that our infrastructure is crumbling. We can create up to 13 million decent-paying jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. We're going to have legislation in that will do just that. I hope that he will work with us. We also understand that our trade policies are a disaster. Let's see if we can work together on that as well.
