Fox News Sunday interviews during 2017: on Immigration

Doug Jones: Opposes funding a border wall; supports comprehensive reform

Q: Would you support a deal that fixes DACA, that protects the so-called DREAMers, but on the other hand has tougher border enforcement and includes some money for continuing to build President Trump's wall?

JONES: I have said before that I opposed the building of a wall. I think that's an expense that the taxpayers just don't have to incur because I do think you can increase border security without having to go to the incredible expense of building that wall, at least the figures that I've seen. I do support the DACA program and would love to see that extended. I hope there can be some bipartisan efforts reached to do that. Immigration has been one of the toughest political footballs going on up there right now and we've had bills in the past that just fell by the wayside because of politics. If there's comprehensive immigration, I think it's going to be very complicated. But it's something that I would love to look at.

Rush Limbaugh: Legal immigrants should join together in common culture

Q: You said that you're skeptical about a new executive order on the so-called "travel ban", and that this new one is going to pass muster with the federal courts?

LIMBAUGH: Well, not so much skeptical. The judge in Seattle said, "well, the president said during the campaign that he wanted to ban Muslims"--it's irrelevant. They're not even using the law to try to stop the president on this. We've even lost the definition of immigration. Immigration today, if you listen to the left, equals anybody who wants to come into the country should be allowed. That's not what immigration is. That's illegal immigration. And we ought to all oppose it. We are all in favor of immigration that determines the quantity of people who get in, whether they assimilate or not--nobody is opposed to that. But immigration has been defined now as people flooding the country who are noncitizens. We're just ruining our opportunity to stay together as a people with common culture.

Mike Pence: Travel ban is constitutional & judges shouldn't overturn it

Q: Is there a danger to the U.S. now that these banned immigrants and refugees are again allowed to travel to the U.S.? And what do you think about the federal appeals court's decision not to allow the travel ban?

PENCE: President Trump has made it clear that he is going to put the safety and security of the American people first. And the executive order that he signed suspending travel from countries that have been compromised by terror is consistent with that objective, and also it's consistent with his powers as president.

Q: But a federal court of appeals--

PENCE: We believe the judge made the wrong decision. We're going to continue to use all legal means at our disposal to stay that order and move forward to take the steps necessary to protect our country. We don't appoint judges to our district courts to conduct foreign policy or to make decisions about the national security. That authority belongs to the president of the United States.
