Phil Murphy: Commit to protecting shores with long-term enviro plan

Model environmental policy after Europe:

Murphy is no stranger to Europe, working there both as an ambassador and during his career at Goldman Sachs. When asked what he would do to "protect" the coasts, he suggested "dreaming and taking risks." He specifically lauded the Netherlands for their commitment to protecting their shores. "They don't have the pipeline discussion we have. They didn't have a discussion about the governor pulling us out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative," Murphy said. "They walk the talk and are prepared."

He said the next governor should "put the brakes" on Christie's policies, but needs to be comfortable with long-term environmental policy planning: "They should be comfortable with the fact that many of these effects won't happen for years," he said.

Chris Christie: Develop Liberty State Park to generate more revenue

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and Senate President Stephen Sweeney blasted Christie's plans to generate more revenue from NJ's most visited park. The two Democrats said they would try to stall any development plan through legislation or litigation until Christie's term expires in Jan. 2018.

Opposition to the plans has grown since a state Department of Environmental Protection report detailed development possibilities at the park, including a low-rise hotel at the dilapidated train sheds. It also called for developing the park's southern end, possibly an amusement park, field house for indoor sports, outdoor amphitheater and another marina.

Liberty State has long been a developer's dream. It has also been viewed as an untapped revenue source by Christie, who is pushing for state parks to generate more revenue and use less taxpayer money. Liberty State brings in about $1.5 million in leases and concessions and requires about $2 million annually in taxpayer dollars to balance its operating budget

Ray Lesniak: Ban baiting of deer and bear during hunting

With 472 black bears already killed during New Jersey's six-day black bear season, the state has decided that's not enough--so the hunt will be on again, for an additional four days, the Division of Fish and Wildlife announced.

The extended hunt is scheduled to start a half-hour before sunrise on Wednesday and run through a half-hour after sunset on Saturday, the division said. Hunters who have already killed their one permitted bear this season are not eligible to continue hunting during the four-day extension.

Opponents of the hunt are also pushing for adoption of a bill, S-687, sponsored by Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, that would ban baiting of deer and bear and require people who live in bear areas to store their trash in animal-proof containers.
