Rick Scott: $6 million for counterterrorism and police equipment

Our state has been rocked by the gruesome terrorist attack at the Pulse Nightclub, in Orlando. Nothing could have prepared me for the horror we saw on June 12, 2016 when a terrorist inspired by ISIS stormed into Pulse and senselessly killed 49 innocent people. This was a terrorist attack and 49 brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, friends and spouses were murdered.

Without fear or hesitation, SWAT members confronted the terrorist. Thank you for your courage to serve in the face of evil.

In order to keep fighting to support public safety in our state, we have to ensure Florida's law enforcement officers have the resources they need to curb senseless violence and crime. That is why I have recommended nearly $6 million for counterterrorism efforts this year.

Phil Scott: $500,000 for college scholarships for veterans at UVM

I am proposing an annual increase of $1 million in base appropriations for both the University of Vermont and VSAC, to get more low and middle-income Vermonters the opportunities they need. I propose an additional $500,000 to fund scholarships for Vermont National Guard members to attend Vermont colleges and universities. This is one small way we can show our gratitude to the men and women who defend our freedoms.

Charlie Baker: $4,000 tax credit for hiring unemployed veterans

Too many of our returning heroes struggle to find good jobs. Jesse Brown and Matt Mastroianni the founders of Heidrea Communications of Plymouth and Bellingham are with us tonight. Heidrea constructs, maintains and repairs cell towers, a booming business in today's wireless world.

After serving our country as United States Marines they both joined a large firm in the cell tower space. In 2007, they left the comfort of a big company to start their own. The beginning was rocky, but today they employ 70 people. Almost half of whom are veterans like them. And their future is bright.

Like many small businesses, they want to hire and employ our veterans. We should make it easier for them to get it done. So we'll be proposing a $4,000 tax credit for businesses hiring and retaining an unemployed veteran.

Matt Mead: Long-term commitment for veteran's tuition waiver

We know firsthand we would not have a Wyoming quality of life without men and woman who serve in the Guard. Our Guard helps fight the global war on terrorism, and assists here at home with firefighting, flood control, and storm damage. Last year our Guard performed air medical evacuation missions in Afghanistan, helped fight wildfires in Idaho, filled sandbags in Saratoga and Hudson, helped prevent a fire in the Big Horn Mountains from becoming a much larger wildfire. That's just a few of the things the Guard did in one year.

In my budget message, I discuss one benefit, the veteran's tuition waiver, which suffered from last year's session cuts. To address the issue in the interim, I moved money to fix the program during that interim period but it's just a short-term fix. I favor a long-term commitment to those who joined the Guard on the promise of tuition assistance was in place. I also favor some form of support for new recruits.

Terry McAuliffe: Expand Virginia Values Veterans program: help vets find work

We helped veterans get into the private workforce faster by offering workforce credit for military training. We expanded the Virginia Values Veterans program to help more than 20,000 veterans find work.

We funded the opening of two new veterans care centers so that Virginia men and women who have served in uniform no longer have to wait for the federal government to get its act together to get the health care they need.
