2017 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Local Issues

John Carney: Develop incubators like DTP @ STAR, full on Day 1

Innovation is the key to our future. The most important part of our long-term strategy is building on the resources we already have to help startups and large and small businesses grow and create jobs. Delaware already has a lot of the tools in place to build an economy based on innovation and entrepreneurialism. Delaware's newest incubator, DTP @ STAR, opened last year and was full on Day 1. And resources like the Delaware Technology Park, New Castle County Chamber's Emerging Enterprise Center, and The Mill in the old Nemours Building provide affordable and supportive space for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. We will seek new opportunities to build more space like this and attract the entrepreneurs that will reshape our economy.

Once we have them here, we need to keep them here so Delaware can benefit from that business and job growth. In most cases, that means access to capital. We will put in place a plan to ensure that businesses that start here, can afford to grow here.

Larry Hogan: Repeal the misguided Road Kill Bill

We risk eliminating much progress--and 66 of the 73 highest priority transportation projects in nearly every jurisdiction. So, I ask again today, on behalf of the people of Maryland: please do not stand in the way of these critical transportation projects. Let's repeal this misguided, poorly drafted, and fatally flawed Road Kill Bill.

Andrew Cuomo: Buffalo Billion: make up for 50 years of state inattention

We put together Regional Economic Development Councils. And it is working. We have invested $4.6B in these Regional Economic Development Councils. In Western New York we made a special commitment. Why? We had a commitment to make up for years of abandonment and years of inaction.

I first came to Buffalo when my father was Governor. Buffalo got caught in an economic transition & really, state government was never there to help. The economic transition has been going on since the 50's, the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. And when I became Governor I committed myself making up for the lack of state investment in Buffalo. And we did and that's what the Buffalo Billion was all about. It was a billion dollars. Why a billion? A billion to say to people, this is not just another plan.

So we said "a Buffalo billion, ohh." Not only did it rhyme, billion is a serious number. And it got people's attention. And then we went to work. You can't reverse 50 years of economic decline in five years. But we did.

Robert Bentley: Fix the fatally-dangerous Redmill Bridge, despite obstacles

When bureaucracy grinds government to a halt, ATRIP has been an answered prayer for communities. Just ask Marshall County about the Redmill Bridge. The dangerous bridge was the site of fatal car crashes. It was an impediment to the local economy heavily dependent on local poultry farms. Chicken trucks couldn't even turn on the road, blocking access to farms and serving as an obstacle to greater overall economic development. Like many of you have seen in your local districts, it was one of those projects everyone wanted and the community desperately needed yet no one in Marshall County thought they would ever see in their lifetime.

Beginning in 2015, our administration joined with the locals and together last month we celebrated the completion of the largest Marshall County project ever. When there is an obstacle along the course of this race we run, we will "find a way or we will make one".
