Steve Farley in 2018 AZ Governor's race

On Drugs: Treat addicted cons to reduce crime

I have been advocating for increased use of treatment programs for prisoners. Just over 900 prisoners (out of the more than 13,000 who needed it) were sent through a program last year that has been proven to reduce recidivism by more than half, saving the state money, and reducing the number of people who are victims of crime.

On Education: Voucher program hurts public schools

Governor Ducey pushed through the voucher bill, swiping taxpayer money from neighborhood district schools and giving it to unaccountable private schools. The backers said this was just a six-year "experiment" on our children. National education researchers have already uncovered the results of this experiment--student achievement is cut in half in the first year after taking a voucher.

On Energy & Oil: Navajo solar grid a model for the state

The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority is now generating clean solar power to the grid at its first solar facility, in Kayenta. More solar means more jobs and less pollution for the entire state, and I'm hoping that our state's other utilities follow the lead of the Navajo Nation. There's no reason we couldn't work toward supplying the entire West with Arizona-generated energy. Forget Texas oil, it's time to power our country on Arizona sunshine.

On Technology: Investment in transportation, which creates jobs

Steve was instrumental in gaining approval for a regional transportation system of roads, buses, bikeways and sidewalks, and the Modern Streetcar light rail line in Tucson, creating hundreds of jobs and more than a billion dollars in private construction projects. Steve's leadership in the creation of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) has resulted in thousands of jobs and a revitalized Southern Arizona.

On Civil Rights: Take down racist Confederate statues

Asked if the state's Confederate monuments should be removed Farley was direct in his answer: "Those Confederate monuments need to go now. They are not monuments in history, they are monuments to a moment in our history: they're celebrating the accomplishments of racists." Farley [said] Ducey should call an emergency meeting of the Legislative Governmental Mall Commission and direct them to take down the monuments, "not punt, the way he's done."

On Health Care: Would go for single payer

On health care, Farley said he didn't trust Congress to get anything done on that front. Farley said he would push for single-payer health care.

On Tax Reform: Wealthy should pay more for schools

Farley doesn't support raising sales taxes, saying doing so would burden the poor. He said business leaders calling for tax increases should "start calling for an increase on taxes for themselves," if they are sincere about adequate education funding. Improving K-12 education should start with teacher raises, which he would fund by getting rid of corporate tax breaks. He is for closing some of the tax-cut loopholes.
