Mike Bloomberg in CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2018

On Energy & Oil: America should be big part of climate solution

Q: Special Envoy to the United Nations for Climate Action Michael Bloomberg tells us he's making good on his pledge to help America's financial commitment to the Paris climate change accords, an international agreement that President Trump pulled out of last year:

BLOOMBERG: If the government is not going to do it, we all have a responsibility. I'm able to do it. So, yes, I'm going to send them a check for the monies that America had promised to the organization as though they got it from federal government.

Q: $4.5 million dollars this year. Will you do the same next year?

BLOOMBERG: Hopefully, by then, President Trump will have changed his view.

Q: President Trump has been a huge critic of this Paris climate change accord.

BLOOMBERG: Yes, but he should change his mind and say, "look, there really is a problem here, America is part of the problem, America is a big part of the solution," and we should go in and help the world stop a potential disaster.

On Energy & Oil: If some countries do right thing on climate, we all benefit

Q: One of the criticisms of the Paris climate change accords, is that it's nonbinding. And none of the developed nations who are part of it have actually met their benchmarks.

BLOOMBERG: Look, it's dangerous to keep doing what we're doing. If everybody would do the right thing, yes, it would be better. But if some people or some countries do the right thing, we all benefit from that.

Q: But the criticism is that industrialized nations aren't living up to those pledges.

BLOOMBERG: I can't speak for other nations. All I know is that America, I believe, will meet its commitment by 2025 to reduce greenhouse gasses by an agreed amount. And if we do it, hopefully, other countries will do it as well.

Q: Do you feel like you're filling a leadership gap?

BLOOMBERG: This is what the American public say they want to do. You have got companies and states and individuals all agreeing to step in, report to the United Nations what our progress is, fulfill our commitment to fund part of it.

On Environment: EPA failing to focus on clean air and clean water

Q: How do you assess EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt?

BLOOMBERG: His policies are not good for the world. To debunk science and walk away from it is just ridiculous. Even if you don't believe it, if there's a possibility that it's right, you have to take prophylactic actions to prevent a disaster. And what I do know is that a lot of kids go to the hospital with asthma attacks because we have a lot of junk we put in the air. A lot of people come down with stomach cancers because there's a lot of stuff that goes into the water.

Q: It sounds like you're saying he's not doing the job that he should be doing.

BLOOMBERG: I don't think there's any question about that. His job is to protect the environment and he has walked away 100% from that, saying "the environment doesn't need protection, I'm going to try to protect jobs." That's not his job.

Q: Should he be fired?

BLOOMBERG: The issue is that what he's doing is very damaging to your health and your children's health and mine.

On Principles & Values: Trump was not a business manager; I ran large organizations

Q: At the DNC in 2016, you called Donald Trump "a reckless and radical choice." It was a memorable quote. Has he done anything to make you reconsider that?

BLOOMBERG: I would give him an incomplete grade. The style of changing your mind every day, and the turnover in the administration is really dangerous.

Q: His compelling case was that he came from the world of business, as you did.

BLOOMBERG: No, he didn't. He was a real estate developer. He didn't manage large numbers of people, he didn't run big organizations. He was not really a business person.

Q: Do you see some management issues, then?

BLOOMBERG: Management is like skiing. You don't read a book on skiing and then go out and ski double black diamonds. Management is something you learn over a period of time and you have to manage larger and larger groups of people and make more and more difficult decisions and live with those decisions as you go. This president does not have experience in running large organizations.
