CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2018: on Homeland Security

Chrissy Houlahan: Respect for vets means Trump shows up on Veterans Day

Q [to HOULAHAN and CRENSHAW]: The two of you are veterans. President Trump said that he should have gone to Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day, but he was busy making calls, doing things for the country. Does it matter to you?

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT CHRISSY HOULAHAN (D-PA-6): : In addition to being a veteran myself, I am third- generation military, and my grandmother and grandfather are buried at Arlington. And so I think it's important that our commander in chief respect the veterans and the people who have served our country so fundamentally. So this is personal to me. But it also is about our nation.

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT DAN CRENSHAW (R-TX-2): : I would have liked to see him at Arlington. But, as veterans, what affects us is, listen, are you giving us a clear mission? Are you giving us the equipment we need to do it? Are you raising pay for the military? He's done all of these things. That's what matters to me as a veteran.

Dan Crenshaw: What veterans need is a clear mission & resources to do it

Q: President Trump said that he should have gone to Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day, but he was busy making calls, doing things for the country. Does it matter to you?

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT CHRISSY HOULAHAN (D-PA-6): : I think it's important that our commander in chief respect the veterans and the people who have served our country so fundamentally.

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT DAN CRENSHAW (R-TX-2): : I have been to Arlington multiple times to bury my friends. I have had least two funerals there that I have attended and gone back occasionally. I also know that the president on a personal level has treated those Gold Star families very well. I would have liked to see him at Arlington. But, as veterans, what affects us is, listen, are you giving us a clear mission? Are you giving us the equipment we need to do it? Are you raising pay for the military? He's done all of these things. That's what matters to me as a veteran.

Bernie Sanders: CIA torture policy means US service members get tortured too

Q: You have announced your opposition to President Trump's nominee, Gina Haspel, to be the first woman CIA director. Is it because Haspel was in the CIA when enhanced interrogation techniques, otherwise known by human rights groups as torture, were used?

SANDERS: Well, on this one, I would agree with John McCain, and tell you what our leaders in the armed forces say. If the US condones torture for other people, then that subjects our own men and women who are captured to be tortured as well.

Q: But you didn't have reservations about John Brennan, whom Obama nominated; you voted for John Brennan who was also in the CIA at the same time as Haspel. Whatever reservations you have about Gina Haspel, why didn't they apply to Obama's nominee?

SANDERS: It's not just the issue of torture. It goes deeper than that. And that is the foreign policy that we have seen from Mr. Trump, which is something that I also strongly disagree with.
