CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2018: on Principles & Values

Dan McCready: Lost 2018 election by 905 votes, but NC investigating fraud

North Carolina's elections board is investigating the possibility that a man working for Republican candidate Mark Harris' campaign--who got 905 more votes than Democrat Dan McCready in the race--used absentee ballots to alter the vote in Bladen County.

The NC State Bureau of Investigations is probing whether absentee ballots were used to alter the vote in three 9th District elections, including the 2018 primary and general elections. The investigation is centered on Leslie McCrae Dowless, a 62-year-old veteran operative in Bladen County who pleaded guilty to felony insurance fraud in 1992. Working as a consultant to the Harris campaign, Dowless allegedly gathered absentee ballots in areas considered to be supportive of McCready but never turned them in.

The NC State Board of Elections could certify Harris as the winner or take the extraordinary step of ordering another election. The Charlotte Observer, the state's largest newspaper, called for a new election in an editorial.

North Carolina's elections board is investigating the possibility that a man working for Republican candidate Mark Harris' campaign--who got 905 more votes than Democrat Dan McCready in the race--used absentee ballots to alter the vote in Bladen County. Harris' campaign has denied any knowledge of potentially illegal behavior that took place on his behalf.

Tom Steyer: Trump & GOP systematically break the law & democratic norms

President Trump and the Republican Party have created an atmosphere of political violence. If you look across the political scene, what you see is routine, systematic lawlessness, an attempt to break small-D democratic norms, in pursuit of victory at all costs. And we see it in voter suppression. We see it in extreme gerrymandering. We see it in the violent political rhetoric, of course, that people have been alluding all morning.

But, more than that, we see it in a president who has been breaking the law systematically as a candidate, as a businessperson, and as a president.

There has been bad behavior on both sides--not that there's perfection on one side and absolute horror on the other. But we're seeing a much broader, systematic attempt to disrespect the norms of democracy, to actually disrespect the laws of the United States, and an attack on the rule of law. And that creates an atmosphere where anything can bubble up and anything is bubbling up.

Tom Steyer: Majority of Americans want Trump impeached and removed

Q: You are one of the leaders nationally for impeachment. You have been running ads for a long time on TV. I don't hear Democratic leaders in Congress talking about impeachment, in fact, the opposite. If Democrats take the House, and do not ultimately began impeachment proceedings against President Trump, what will you do you?

STEYER: Almost 80% of registered Democrats want this president impeached and removed from office. If you ask Americans broadly, more people are in favor of that than aren't. So it's not as if I'm representing some small part of the United States. I'm representing most Americans. So, in fact, what we have is a movement that is asking for a different America, which is one that recognizes the rule of law, gets rid of corruption, and treats every American equitably & fairly. And so, if I hear from elected officials that it's not politically expedient, I ask only two questions. Are we telling the truth? Are we standing up for the American people and the Constitution?

John Kasich: The press is a critical foundation of freedom--not the enemy

Q: What do you mean by "a post-truth environment"?

KASICH: We have to get our facts right. We have to seek the truth. And if we have a difference between liberals, conservatives, Republicans and Democrats, we can mediate those differences, if we can agree to the basic facts.

Q: A new poll showed only 38% of Republican voters say the news media is "an important part of democracy." 51% of Republican voters agree with President Trump's view that the press is an "enemy of the American people." This is your party.

KASICH: The press is such a critical foundation of freedom in our society and all over the world. The first thing that people do when they want to assume power, these autocrats in Central Europe, they shut the press down. And here's the question people have to ask themselves. If you don't want to trust the press, who are you going to trust? A politician? I mean, that's the last group of people I would trust, are politicians.

John Kasich: I didn't leave the Republican Party; it left me

Q: Do you see an opening for Republicans wanting an alternative brand of leadership for 2020?

KASICH: Here's what I do believe: You have a department store that's red and a department store that's blue, and neither of them right now are providing products to the great middle. And you know what happens? That's how another store opens up in the neighborhood.

Q: Are you going to open up that store?

KASICH: I'm still a Republican. Look, I didn't leave the Republican Party; the Republican Party left me. In my state, we have balanced budgets, a surplus; we're up a half-a-million jobs. And then people say, "well, Kasich is not a conservative." What does that mean? Does that mean I have to be anti-immigrant, anti-trade, in favor of debt? I mean, party, come on home. We're pro-immigrant. We're pro-trade. We're pro-growth. We should care about people from top to bottom, not just those at the top, but everybody. I can bring that party back. That's what I'm going to do in one way or another.
